It would have modern graphics, modern controls and camera. That's a given.
It would also have both the N64 original and the DS remake so you can choose which version you want to play.
I like that the DS version attempted to add new content but the limitations of the system made it a poor version to actually play. And Super Mario 64 deserves better than the DS version being the only modern remake.
I'm sure people will retaliate saying that it doesn't deserve to come back because something was bad or this other thing was bad. Well, those bad things whatever they are would be remastered so that they are no longer bad.

With Mario Odyssey released last year, I don‘t think there‘s much use for a remaster of Mario 64. Sure, different games and it would sell great no doubt and so on. But Odyssey did everything 64 set out to do and did it a million times better. That‘s not to say 64 was a bad game, far from it. But remastered, it‘d look like a poor man‘s Mario Odyssey. It’d look barren, empty and small. Everything would need to be redesigned and rebuilt. And at that point, why not do an Odyssey 2 instead?

I don't really think there needs to be a remaster for Super Mario 64. Odyssey is essentially a sequel to that game and I think it does a great job at bringing back the 3D formula the fans have been craving for. Besides, any remake of Mario 64 would only end up in backlash because something about it won't be quite right as Nintendo fans will be incredibly picky about what they want from the game. It will be a lose lose situation for Nintendo and the fans.

I have nothing against it, Super Mario 64 is a very good game and anytime would be a good time to give it a remake treatment, but for me Super Mario Galaxy 1 is a lot better so if I have to choose one I would choose Super Mario Galaxy 1. It is the best Super Mario game ever. Super Mario 64 is still good anyway so if they will remake it I would be happy anyway... it's just that they could give us something even better! Having both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy 1 would be absolutely awesome!
Paper Mario 1 would deserve a modern remaster/remake too!
PS: Super Mario Odyssey is good but it is not an improved Super Mario 64, it is different in many things and in some things it is even less good than Super Mario 64. Swimming controls for example are a lot less immersive and fun compared to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. They are more similar to Super Mario Sunshine and probably swimming contrrols are the less good thing both in Sunshine and in Odyssey. Swimming in Odyssey is shallow, boring and overly simplified
@Rocketjay8 Of course not. There are some things that are worse in Odyssey, not the whole game, just some things, and swimming controls definitely are worse.
So one cannot say that Super Mario Odyssey is an improved version of Super Mario 64, because of this reason. They are very different from each other and some things are not even improved in Odyssey. But that does not mean that Odyssey is not at least as good as Super Mario 64.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN Sure it does. It's over 22 years old now and the only time it was revisited was on the DS which hardly counts. Nintendo remasters games like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess so I say Super Mario 64 should be redone as well to be the best looking and most playable version.

Super Mario 64 could do with a remake, but I agree with @Switchcraft that it would be better as Mario Odyssey DLC considering the moveset (aside from Cappy) is pretty similar.
While people would likely complain that it's not as good as the original version (even if they released the original version on the Switch unchanged they'd STILL complain it wasn't as good)... I think it should be made accessible to modern gamers. Yes, a lot of us have fond memories of Mario 64, but there are a lot of grown working age adult Switch owners that weren't BORN when Mario 64 was released 22 YEARS AGO!!

It doesn't need a remaster, but I would like to see a re-release of the DS version with proper controls - even just based around the original N64 style. Playing it with the D-pad and touch screen just felt awkward.
@Switchcraft 's idea of Mario 64 Odyssey DLC levels sounds AWESOME to me. I'd buy that in a heartbeat!

I would approve of a remake of most great older games tbh. I don't want to take away from new games being released but I'm always for seeing older games with higher end graphics if it's done properly.
At the very least, it would be interesting and fun to see all these levels in full HD. Though I imagine if they did it, it's be more likely that it would be a Mario Odyssey take on these levels. Or even just a Mario Odyssey world with flying islands where the islands are just...the levels from Mario 64.
i'd rather have SM64 DLC for odyssey, than a full fledged remastered/remake. but, if they add something new into it. then, for sure day 1. if not, i'm keeping my VC version that I've owned on Wii/Wii U.

A HD version of Super Mario 64 DS on Switch with improved textures and soundtrack would suffice.
I see no point in remaking a game that was very much a product of its time and is awfully limited and barren when compared to more recent games in the series.
Mario deserves to keep moving forward. Remakes will only hold that progress back.
In a Mario 64 remaster I would like some minor changes in the look of some stages. I had the game back then on Nintendo 64, I was used to it and never noticed anything strange, then I bought Gamecube and Super Mario Sunshine, then Wii and Super Mario Galaxy, years passed and one day I saw a gameplay video of Super Mario 64: I was shocked when I noticed that there are barbed wire fences in that game. This is something I wouldn't be happy to see in a modern Mario game XD
