I'm posting this here in its own topic as a (hopefully more searchable) public service in case anyone else is ever looking for info on this problem, as the Switch thread would see the topic lost in the backlog forever.
The other day I had a really weird Switch problem that I thought for sure was a dead Switch that was going to have to go in for service. So I've used my Switch every single day since March 3...no problems at all. (Ok, BotW hard locked once, and only once, and I had to hold the power button to reset the Switch.) So before bed, I played a few ranked Street Fighter II matches, as I've done all week, put it in sleep and docked it. The next day I put it in its case and brought it with me. I picked it up after a while, and found it wasn't turning on! No big deal I thought, I held the power button in to reset it. Hit it again to turn it on. The Nintendo logo appeared briefly....and then the screen was black again. I repeated this several times. Same result.
I brought it to the dock thinking maybe it ran out of power somehow while frozen. No, same issue. Wouldn't turn on, resets just yielded a Nintendo logo, then nothing. I thought if it was drained maybe it needed to be charged. I left it in the dock a while....reset...same problem. Left it longer. This time I came back to it and the screen changed to being ON (while in the dock) (But it didn't recognize the dock...no video out, no green light on dock.) And the screen was now stuck on the Switch logo. I undocked it....but it didn't respond to buttons. I reset it again, and back to the "Nintendo" logo, then nothing. I left it in the dock a while again, and it got back to the "Switch" logo but didn't recognize the dock.
At that point I was all set to set up a repair/return for it.
Last by not least, I can't remember if it was with the Switch logo, or the blank screen after a reset, I unplugged the dock a few times with the console in it. The green light would flash a second, and then go away. But the problem continued. Then one time after plugging the dock the green dock light blinked twice. And suddenly I got video out and the "A to continue" screen was up. I played a track of Fast RMX and everything ran fine as though nothing happened. Docked, undocked, popped in ARMS, popped in Disgaea 5.....everything's up and running as normal and (so far) has been running fine, and in and out of sleep numerous times. It was apparently NOT a hardware failure but some sort of really weird frozen state that even resetting it normally wasn't getting it out of that state. It didn't seem right that the machine would suddenly and spontaneously die for no reason after months of working fine right up until I put it on the dock. Tablet tech doesn't usually fail that way.
Hopefully that problem won't turn up again and was a fluke, but if anyone else has a similar problem, hopefully you'll find this and find your hardware is in fact fine, and you just have to coax the machine back to running. And hopefully mine STAYS running
