@AlexSora89 You can't play XB1 Games With Gold at all if you're offline (possibly the same with PS+) so needing 7 day online checks for NES games is slightly better.
Actually, you can. Microsoft's "Games with Gold" isn't a game rental thing. It's "We're giving you these games free, if you're a paid member." Once you have the game, it's yours. You can play it offline or with a silver (free) membership. How do I know this? Because I disconnected my consoles from the internet towards the end of last month, yet was still playing the games I got via being a paid subscriber in the past.
Think that's just 360 games. Good deal though, GWG has been very good last couple of years.
What they're offering in return is an inferior service and inferior games rental service compared to the competition (and a Retro games selection worse than the Wii launch in 2006). They'd have been better off providing more in return for more money, or at least options offering that.
The things people are complaining about it not having are not things I would've paid extra for. It's like when people whine about how the Switch doesn't have enough internal storage or how the Wii U lacked BluRay playback. I'd personally rather not pay extra for things I don't want or need.

Gonna go on a rant as I see this parroted nearly everywhere, but one thing that I would really like for people to understand is that dedicated servers aren't a magical cure. It's all about netcode. Compare Smash Brawl's online with Smash 4's online. Even though Smash 4's online wasn't optimal, it was a hell of a lot better than Brawl's despite that not using dedicated servers.
Another thing is with Mario Tennis Aces' demo versus the full game. The demo had a lot of lag problems, but the full game ironed a lot of it out so while there's still some, it's not completely terrible.
Then on the opposite end of the spectrum you have Halo: The Master Chief Collection which DID use dedicated servers but was awful on release until only recently.
Just because a game is peer-to-peer doesn't mean it's bad and vice versa. Smash For Glory would be better with peer-to-peer, Mario Tennis tournaments would be better, etc. Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would indeed benefit the most from dedicated servers, but again it isn't down to just implementing dedicated servers, it's going to mostly lie on netcode.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

1. The main service for Nintendo Online Service is "play multiplayer games online". How is that inferior to the main service for XBL Gold or PSN+, which is "play multiplayer games online"?
Every time I've tried going online for a Mario Kart race or three, a few hands of Uno, or one of my other online multiplayer enabled games things have ran smoothly. I just got done playing Splatoon 2 and experienced no connection issues.
On the other hand, half the time when I try playing a Blood Bowl 2 match online on my xb1one player or the other gets a dropped connection before the coin toss. And no, it's not someone rage quitting because of inducements chosen or something stupid like that. Half the time when I go online with an online co-op game on xb1 there's problems staying connected to the server.
2. The NES Service aspect so far is loaded with classic games that are still fun to play and that people would happily pay for individually. And that may cost 50-100 per game if you're trying to get a physical copy. And more will be coming every month. How is this inferior to Microsoft's Games with Gold which frequently has the free games being crap like Slime Rancher or PSN+ which routinely offers games that will take 80+ hours to complete then takes them away, probably when you're half way through the game if you have things like work or a family that prevent you from dedicating entire days to a game? Heck one of this month's Instant Game Collection titles on PSN+ is Destiny 2, just the base game... lol
3. I'll grant you that the app is in no way, shape, or form as good as built in voice chat. But 3rd party games that heavily use voice chat such as Fortnight are likely to have voice chat built right into the game it's self.
4. I'll also grant you that the initial Special Deals are rather underwhelming. On the other hand, I frequently feel the same way about Microsoft's Gold Members Only special discounts. Often they're for games I would never buy to begin with due to having no interest in that type of game or because the game it's self isn't very good.
5. To be honest, the cloud backup saves thing works about how I was expecting it to work. Not seeing how it's "inferior" either. Unless by 'inferior' you mean "works about how you were expecting it to work before they announced any details"
EDIT: Clicked the link, and huh... they apparently changed how XB1 games with gold works this month, because last month they were still considered yours if you weren't a gold member and were playable if not connected to the internet.
I think it's silly to expect Nintendo's service to be similar to XB or PS at a price that is 3x cheaper.
If anything we should expect a service that is 3x worse than those, which seems to be exactly what we are getting.
Honestly, I'd be willing to pay an equal fee of $60 per year if that meant we got a PS/XB quality service instead.
At this point I'm more afraid that a lot of people will be buying into this, giving Nintendo the impression that they're on the correct path resulting in us being stuck with what we're getting now.. That alongside a price increase to $30 in the future, then $40 etc. etc. While they justify those price-hikes with just more NES games or something similar..
@19Robb92 I see your anxiety, but I bet Nintendo will see the opportunity of lots of subscriptions as a revenue stream to finance improving their service over time. I mean, Xbox live has evolved over consoles. I'm sure Nintendo's online service will too. And it's not like they are either tone deaf or lazy.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
Though that brings up another thing I find very strange, the fact that they're branding this whole service as "Nintendo Switch Online" and not just "Nintendo Online" or something else.
It makes me think they are going to scrap everything and start from zero again for their next system and call that "Nintendo [insert console] Online".
I hope I'm wrong though. I just don't get why they wouldn't brand it as something broader that sounds like an overall online infrastructure to be used on all future systems instead of something system-specific.

That's probably because the Wii U and 3ds are online capable, but not part of the paid service. The name is to tell you which of their current consoles use the service. Microsoft didn't name their online service "Microsoft Online", they named it after the console it originated on.
@19Robb92 The thing is Sony needed to charge higher for the subscription to breakeven the losses of other departments, and this goes the same for Microsoft. Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn't need to do that.
Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

@Grumblevolcano You can play PS+ games offline. When you download the game, it just checks the expiry date of your subscription, and effectively places the same expiry date on your games. So when you sub ends, so does your ability to play the PS+ games. So there's definitely a way to work around this issue that works.
@FaeKnight Weird, I remember not being able to load up Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (got via Games With Gold) because I was offline so after that I just bought a digital copy in the next sale so I could play it even if offline.
@Octane does PS+ allow you to disconnect from the internet for extended periods of time? I know you can play those games if you are "offline" but how long can you be offline
I think people are just microscopping ever detail, the number of people effected by not being able to connect once in 7 days , if you do not have internet at home I wouldn't suggest any online paid subscriptions of any kind.
Really the reasons you cant connect in 7 days even to a public wifi are rare in 2018

We don't have internet in our cottage. Would say that is a common thing in Sweden.
Well I guess at least most people with a switch and a subscription to the online service will also have a smartphone they can use as a mobile hotspot to reactivate the NES games for another week.
So, here's a question. If one doesn't have reliable internet access, why would you be subscribing to Switch Online to begin with? I mean, it seems weird to me to sign up for an online multiplayer service then complain "one of the bonus features doesn't work if I can't access the internet at least once a week."

Because you might only be there a few weeks in the summer.
A better question would be why anyone would want to subscribe to an online service that will undoubtedly make the service worse?
I fail to understand why people are assuming the online service will suddenly get worse just because the rest of the features are rolled out and it becomes a paid service. If anything, it's more likely the service will be improved over time because it's a paid service so they can devote some people to improving it.
Do people actually believe that Nintendo is just going to slap a price tag on online multiplayer then never work to improve the online service?
The online service is so far behind, even at the low price of $20, it still feels like a steal for Nintendo. I won't be buying it until they catch up to where, at least, the Xbox 360 and PS3 was at. Which I feel might be sooner than expected IF the vast majority of gamers follow suit in not buying the service until it's serviceable. Seeing a bunch of empty servers for games like Splatoon 2 and ARMS would have to make Nintendo act quickly, or so is how I think it would go down.
