Topic: Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door!!!!!!!

That area was locked for me...I don't remember that being a thing in the original, or maybe it was after a certain point in the game, I dunno.

Wuhu, the game arrived today! The Mario key ring is bigger than I thought. Paper Mario's design is great.

This is the first time for me.

Started the game and I’m having a good time so far! Game looks pretty good and the combat’s fun, but the standouts for me are definitely the writing and the music, both are noticeably good.

Just played for a few minutes and got kissed already. Here we go!

@jedgamesguy Nice! The music is fantastic. The writing/story is really good, not common for Mario games to have this good of a story!

Is it just me or is the yellow B button prompt a little irritating? First time buying something at the item shop I thought this was some kind of new currency or something. ... hehe 😅

Thanks! So far it is everything I could hope for in a Paper Mario game.

Played for 2 hrs last night and so far it's fun and I'm progressing along really well. Made it to pedal town and I'm on the way to the castle. I have a wierd obsession with hammering anything and everything so I'm usually stuck on one screen for a while 🤣

Downloaded it and started playing it this arvo. A quick point RE: performance. I think that whole bit has been a bit overblown. Yes, of course, it's sub 1080p and if you look you can see the aliasing shimmering on edges. And yes you can notice that it's only 30fps, especially when you're moving through the world. And it would be nicer if it wasn't.......

.......however..... it's generally a fairly static game so neither are particularly noticeable. Especially in portable mode and in battle. And they've also just generally pushed the visuals elsewhere pretty hard. I'd go as far as saying this is one of the most visually impressive games on the Switch in terms of having a look they wanted to achieve and just nailing it

At this stage I'm half hoping that down the line perhaps we might get the same treatment for Paper Mario 64? One can dream

@Retro-banjoGC Don't think we should get too into that convo, but...in the original script of the game...(something I don't really like because I'm so used to the original translation, lol) Vivian is simply a male character. Dunno why everyone is calling him that here, pretty sure it's more like a dross-dresser kind of thing...or something.

Also, I can't decide to if I like the new ost or not...I like both versions, just let me listen to both of them at the same time, game! lol

Thousand Year Door, Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Nintendo were pretty fixated on water during the GameCube era.

Oh nooo, Mario got cursed! Hehe, this reminds me so much of Link's Awakening.

The entire gaming industry was obsessed with water for a bit, it was a good way for companies to show off how good their hardware has gotten. The Dreamcast was basically Water: The Console.

I've just finished the first chapter and TTYD is every bit as much fun as I remembered. Kudos, Nitendo.

Is it important which stat I choose to level up? Can I max every stat with the max level?

Alright, so: as of writing this I'm on Chapter 3 of the remake, but I kind of wanted to put my thoughts down while I still have them fresh in my brain, because so far, I am really enjoying this. Of course most of that can be attributed to the fact the OG was already great, but as a remake this really works for me. I'll admit it--it's the closest to a definitive version beyond just playing the OG. I almost feel kinda stupid for being so cynical towards it.

The art direction alone is a huge win for me; it can't be stressed enough just how great of a job IntSys did with properly enhancing the original art style, something the previous Mario remakes fell short in, with MaRPG feeling restrained and inconsistent on where to update the look and Mario V. DK not even trying to have a style. TTYD doesn't have this issue, updating the graphics to feel closer to hand-crafted paper look of the modern titles while still maintaining it's distinctive, pop-up book qualities. It's nothing short of impressive.

@Joeynator3000 it’s a bit more nuanced than that. The large majority of text that described Vivian as “but she’s actually a boy!” comes from other characters talking about Vivian. But Vivian herself did always identify as a girl.

So it’s this case of a character that says “please refer to me as a girl”, and everyone else keeps a mental note of “but actually no”.

In the original English they simply made her 100% female, and switched the insults from Beldam to targeting her looks instead of her gender. The new translation keeps the references to her gender, while adapting them for modern times.

Still not a fan of the tree level with the Puni's all these years later.
