Thank god. I'm not asking Nintendo to constantly innovate but they destroyed any argument for safe 2d Mario games like these when they released 3 of them in the span of a year.
Probably some time after SMO, unless they decide to do Mario Maker 2 first to further cash in on that game's success.
Without a pen it would be a pain to play Super Mario Maker on the Switch. You just don't get that precision with your fingers as you do with a pen, like the WiiU gamepad has and the 3DS.
Well a 2D Mario game is inevitable, they sell so stupidly well that there's no way the Switch isn't getting one. It's just a matter of when. I could see the next 2D Mario game happening 2018/2019, still relatively early but removed enough from Odyssey to give that game room to breathe.
As for what kind of 2D Mario, I agree that the NSMB brand is probably tainted at this point and they won't make another one, but at the same time it's a good point that the Switch might not be suitable for a Mario Maker type of game. Maybe they could use the Joycons instead of a stylus, but that might not be as precise.
@Pahvi
They're Mario levels, you don't need much precision. Based on the size of the Switch screen and how the game was layed out on the Wii U? You'd need to be able to place a block within a 0.5x0.5cm square. Not that much smaller than the icons on a smartphone. It's Mario Maker not a drawing app.

Yep. 3 in a year. I can math. Unless theres a 5th game in 2012?
I believe he was referring to New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, and New Super Luigi U, all three of which were released within a 12 month period.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

Let's also not forget that they existed on four different platforms.
Yeah, I do think that especially the latter two grew a bit stale, it was just more of the same. However, I wouldn't accuse them of turning NSMB into an annual franchise or anything like that.
Give it time...there's always the same mario series that come to each of nintendo's consoles...we'll have Mario Kart, a 3D mario adventure, new super mario bros, paper mario, a few more mario sports titles, a mario and sonic olympic title and more...in what order is up to nintendo themselves, but give it time...system is still new and they'll want to keep the games going for the next 5 years of it's life cycle (hopefully longer than 5 years this time).
I may be a minority in here as well. But I would definitely want a SMB game for the Switch. That franchise is legendary, it's been around since the beginning. Honestly I would have like to see an SMB game first before SMO(which know it's not going to happen). I would like to see what they can do to bring it up to date, and bring it on to the switch. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that at some point in the Switch's lifespan we get a SMB game for the Switch!
I don't want another New SMB game. But Mario Maker? The Switch is the perfect platform for it.
Unless you are trying to play on your TV
In creator mode the TV was only really useful prototyping the game if you had a second person to play the level for you. Which is something you can still do on the Switch by simply docking/undocking the console or handing them the tablet. As someone who played the game a lot I don't think it's that big a deal.
Lets be honest here, the Wii U was a fantastic platform for the game because it was a tablet with traditional controls. Having two screens wasn't really a factor. If you were playing it by yourself you were looking at one screen the whole time. IMO the only thing the Switch lacks in that regard is a traditional D-Pad. But in exchange for that you get a version of the game you can take with you.

It's the internet, people pretty much only comment when they have something to complain about
Definitely true most of the time, it would appear. Whoops back to complaining!
I personally really really hope that the NSMB series is done. The games have already been around for too long now, I would love to see nintendo take a different visual, story, and style approach. Nintendo is really good at innovating games from classic series.
I skipped Wii U so I haven't tried Mario Maker, but I don't really understand the point. Why would I want to create my own super mario level? Much of the fun of playing a new Mario game is not knowing what's coming.
I absolutely want a new 2D mario game. I don't consider new super mario bros stale (maybe in part because I haven't played one since New Super Mario Bros Wii), but if it's a whole new Mario series (New New Super Mario Bros?), that's fine too.
Also, I recognize a good 3d Mario is leagues ahead of a 2d Mario these days (still can't understand how New Super Mario Bros Wii way outsold Mario Galaxy). But I'm not sure I'd like to play a new Mario 3d game on mobile. A 2d mario, on the other hand, seems very well suited for it (if they can make a joycon w/ a real D pad)
If there'll be another SMB game that is not MM2, I really hope they make it feel fresh and unique. To create something MM users couldn't replicate but more importantly to shake off this staleness NSMB grew over its many frequent and similar-looking and -playing entries.
Being more of the creative type, I'd rather have a MM2 than any SMB games.

I will disagree with many people here. Nintendo absolutely must release super mario bros, super mario bros IS Nintendo and Nintendo is Super Mario Bros.
I have been a Nintendo user/fan for a long time, but I have not bought the Switch, nor I intend to at least for the moment.
Nintendo doesn't get why the Wii U failed, not because people didn't understand it but because the lack of games.
Games are the difference for Nintendo when competing against the Xbox or the PlayStation. While the Switch might have some innovative features (like the portable console) and be more powerful than the Wii U, it's still just as powerful as the xbox and the PS 4 and much less powerful than the PS 4 PRO, and it costs more.
It's not about the console, it's about the game, and I am not going to spend $300 in a console that hardly has any games, Zelda is just not enough, super mario odyssey? sure but Nintendo has tried those kind of variations before and they didn't work (e.g. super mario sunshine). Super mario bros is a classic and it's what differentiate Nintendo from MS and Sony.
They need to have support from games companies, they need call of duty, EA sports and the likes but to make people buy the switch they need to offer something different, something that only Nintendo can offer.
Super Mario Maker is ok, but it only has a limited audience, not everyone has the patience to create their own scenarios.
They need super mario bros, super smash bros, mario kart (a new version) and possibly something like super mario galaxy 3.
Mario is the most recognized and successful franchise in the history of gaming, will they just throw it out?
They shouldn't release all at once, I agree, but they should have a timeline, when I see that, and if that includes Nintendo iconic games, I will think about buying the switch, for now I stick to the wii u.
Hurry up Nintendo before I decide it's better to switch to PS or xbox.
I haven't actually bought a New Super Mario Bros. game since NSMB:Wii - which I absolutely adored - so I'd love to see at least a port of one (or more) of the more recent installments on the Switch I think that the franchise would be a great fit for the console - no split-screen, so you could realistically play multiplayer on-the-go in tabletop mode - and the simple controls would mean single Joy-Con play would be possible too...a NSMB game would be a definite purchase for me!
I hope a game is coming but has an overhaul to make it feel fresh. A proper New Super Mario World would be great, overhauled graphics would help too. Made by a completely different team.
I agree that play anywhere local multiplayer could be a big draw.
