The SoC that we can be confident enough about that it's not really a rumour anymore should be able to run the same game code with minimal effort. And most of the murmurings we've heard seem to say BC will be a thing. It also makes a fair amount of sense to do it

@skywake Yes but the OP was asking about official statements from Nintendo. No doubt some of these recent hardware spec 'leaks' prove true but that didn't seem particularly relevant to their enquiry.

Fingers crossed for backwards compatibility though. It would take some almighty nerve for Nintendo to go in the other direction whilst carrying over accounts that many will have had eight years of game purchases on by the time it releases. On this basis, it seems a pretty sure thing right now.

I think it will definitely have some sort of strange gimmick-itโ€™s so un nintendoey if they didnโ€™t take risks with new stuff, and almost every console has had something new. I think AR features are highly possible, or a projector on the back so you could play anywhere on a big screen. or it will have a brand new duck hunt and call of duty and comes included with a joy-gun ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ˜

How about for an additional $20 to the sticker price Nintendo attach a projector display to the dock?

@FishyS Elden Ring, FFXVI, Monster Hunter World, All the RE remakes, plus 7 and 8, Yakuza Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth, Devil May Cry 5, just to name a few off the top of my head. Plus tons of oldies like Fallout 4, the later bioshock games, the tomb raider reboot trilogy, classic Far Cry, stuff like that. Nintendo only people missed out on quite a lot. A system that can run all that would be a dream for many.

@Sigran102 Final fantasy 16 and 7 part 1 and 2 aren't on xbox either because they are either permanent console exclusives or timed exclusives for PS5 or PS4. So I wouldn't say we technically missed out. Although I agree it would be nice if the ones which aren't console exclusives come to Switch 2.

At least the original tomb raider reboot (I didn't actually realize there was a trilogy) could have easily run on Switch, the devs just didn't feel like making the port apparently. Switch 2 getting more powerful won't magically mean every game gets a port to every console.

Mostly though, I agree with your point. My previous post was really me trying to think of games I personally would be interested in that we missed out on and the list is extremely small since I tend not to like gritty/realistic art styles. The list of games I was interested in that came to Switch but ran badly however was extremely long.

Nintendo also confirmed (as far back as in 2021 and recently reaffirmed in their most recent shareholder Q&A) that the Switch successor will use Nintendo Accounts.

breathes in Okay, so these are my predictions for the Nintendo Switch Flip(yes, that's what I'm calling it, remember the patent?). So, first of all, it'll have 4K graphics, definitely. It will have backwards compatibility with all Switch titles, and(this is a stretch) it can use pretty much every Bluetooth controller, mouse, keyboard, or other input devices. On the software side, the device will ship with 3 for-fun titles(a la 3DS/2DS), Stamp World, MiiSee(Miiverse rebooted), and get this: It will come with an optional download... Super Mario Bros 3 35! jazz hands It will have a photo-taking app(yes, it has a camera), a media player, web browser, eShop, and Mii Maker. It uses USB-C, and the majority of the device's colors are wood-grain and dark gray. Alright, that's all I can do for now. (phew!)

HI!
I'm Jay, your average Nintendo fan(and clean freak lol) My adjectives are he/him, and that's all the info you need, right?
What? You want my Nintendo FC on Switch? It's on my profile. :)

@MarioFan41 I don't think it would be Switch 2 related, but I am hoping Nintendo will being back/create some version of Mario 35 next year of the 40th anniversary. That said, Nintendo World Championship: nes being a similar (but not free) type of game concept makes me pessimistic about Mario 35.

I am doubtful Switch 2 will have a web browser. That massively increases the attack surface, makes age-gating harder, and, fundamentally, people have phones nowadays so few people need a web browser on their console.

This may be more wishful thinking than likely, but I expect a version of the Switch that is more comfortable to hold with bigger sticks and buttons. Joy cons are tiny and not fun to hold for anyone with hands bigger than a toddler's, unsatisfying for both portable play and motion controls. I'd love something as comfortable to hold as the Wii U's GamePad, like the Nitro Deck. And maybe with a clamshell lid to make it easier to pack.

Guys this is the first Nintendo console Iโ€™ve been excited for in a while. They have a chance to really change the narrative about them and become a major player in the third party scene.

Qwertyninty

FishyS

@Qwertyninty What are you excited about in particular? Switch already has the most third party games of any of the current consoles (I guess unless you count steam deck as a console). I suspect Switch 2 will be similar to Switch but less constrained โ€” the very fanciest 3rd party games either won't be ported or will be ported with downgrades. However, there will hopefully be more in the middle which don't have to be downgraded.

@Qwertyninty

Probably won't happen unless the Switch successor gets Call of Booty and/or GTA.

But I am curious as to which narrative you're talking about? For example. Nintendo don't censor their third-party games as much as Sony does; so the developer's vision is more intact on Nintendo platforms than on Sony or Microsoft. We also have third-party publishers beginning to skip Xbox because Game Pass is cannibalizing a la carte game purchases.

I doubt the narrative will change much from what it is now once the Switch successor arrives. It'll be a generation behind, power wise. Like the OG Switch, it'll be an indie / port machine with a well-planned first party release schedule. Publishers will continue to prioritize PC first, Playstation second, Switch successor second (if it isn't too expensive to contract the work), and Xbox...if MS throw Game Pass spacebucks at them.

@WaveBoy I would probably give it a replay. I would 100% replay if they introduced a Master Quest mode.

Nick

Lazz

@Yousef- he Master Quest caused me to replay BOTW, and that's where I discovered Tarrey Town for the first time. I had completely missed that quest line in my initial playthrough (and was so happy to have found it). I'm wondering what I may have missed in TOTK? I did some quests completely out of order, and actually completed the Faron Storm portion while the storm was still in full force.

Nick

Qwertyninty

@Magician itโ€™s more than a narrative itโ€™s just the fact that Nintendo is always in third place when it come to third parties. This could be the first Nintendo system that has the two highest selling third party games consistently (GTA and COD) release day and date with Sony and Microsoft. That would be a HUGE achievement.

Qwertyninty

Qwertyninty

@FishyS still was missing COD for a whole generation and although we got the ps2 remaster it is missing the most current gta games. I mentioned this two specifically because the are the two best selling third party games. Nintendo needs to make it a priority that the latest versions are on their console.

Qwertyninty

FishyS

@Qwertyninty Unrelated to your point, but is COD still considered third party? Microsoft owns it.

At the moment Nintendo owns 2 of the top 7 franchise (Mario and Pokemon), Microsoft owns 2 (COD and Minecraft), Tetris and FIFA are on all the platforms, and GTAV isn't on Switch.

I suspect next gen will be identical except that PS5 and Switch 2 will have COD for the next decade because of the legal agreement. I wouldn't be surprised if GTA 6 was so power-hungry that it doesn't come to Switch 2.

Personally, I'm just hoping Switch 2 gets newer Final Fantasy games.

@Yousef- I agree in principle more power shouldn't mean a lot; it's just annoying that more and more games have been getting crappy ports to Switch lately. I'm hoping Switch 2 will partially fix that.

WaveBoy wrote:

Would any of you actually replay something like Tears of the Kingdom if Nintendo got it running at 60fps on their next console? .

I don't care about fps necessarily, but if they had a free or cheap upgrade to BotW which made it generally look nicer I would definitely go back to it.

There are also some games (cough cult of the lamb) with long loading screens and lag which were painful enough that I stopped playing; I'm hoping issues like that are fixed on Switch 2 and I would definitely revisit.
