Huh.

I mean, it is good to know what we're getting into ahead of time. Nintendo maybe took the reaction to the Bakugan thing seriously.

@klingki It kind of is Nintendo's fault to be fair. We're in the 4th year of the Switch's life, we should expect great things this year but they've been silent and we don't even know what's coming this year, or even next month. I understand this year has created problems for everyone but Sony and Microsoft have still managed to keep their fans updated with news. After E3 was cancelled, I think it was fair to expect the next Direct to be a general one, yet here we are with a 10 minute update on a small selection of previously announced 3rd party titles.

Surely they have several big titles planned for this year, they can't all have been delayed.

I think the hope here is that the next general Direct is gonna be a big one as far as first-party news, and so to prevent their third-party partners from getting overshadowed, Nintendo is giving them some time in the limelight now while they iron out last-minute release details for their own games.

In a normal world, we would've already had an E3 presentation by now, so we know Nintendo is sitting on a bunch of big stuff. They've just been really wary to announce anything until they have a concrete release plan, which is obviously not as easy to lock down in the current situation of the world.

@klingki The issue is, games have to be announced at least what, 2 months out if you don't want manufacturing to leak their existence? So we aren't getting another game until the end of September at least. I mean, maybe they'll announce Bravely Default II, Rune Factory V and Doom Eternal as September, Bayonetta 3, Persona 5 Scramble and Digimon Survive as October, and Shin Megami Tensei V, Disco Elysium, and No More Heroes III as November. I mean, that'd give us 5 exclusives and 4 major current gen ports, which wouldn't be a bad q3, at least for me. And having typed that out, really only SMT V is a total no way, and Bayo 3 is an unlikely, the rest of that is pretty plausible.

But honestly, if they're doing a Monday mini 3rd party only, I wouldn't be exactly shocked by a 1st party focused one some other time during the week.

@link3710 Yeah, it could be a reverse Pokemon situation where instead of leading with the good stuff and then hyping up a disappointing free-to-play MOBA, we'll get the third-party info as sort of an appetizer to a big Nintendo feast a few days later.

The fact Nintendo are doing a tiny third party Direct and not a single thing about Mario or any other first party game tells me one thing.

DON’T LISTEN TO THE RUMOURS. People expected big announcements and there aren’t any, just these little things. I think this makes me believe more that there’s no such thing as a Mario collection and Nintendo obviously aren’t concerned about releasing any details on first party games.

I think there’s a chance Nintendo are riding the year out with as few games as possible other than a couple of easy to do ports such as Pikmin 3 and Mario 3D World.

Someone should ask those with a reliable track record of predicting Directs when a first party Direct will be. Maybe still coming this week?

JoyBoy

Well, it's the first of a series of partner mini directs.

Well, if it includes things like Bayonetta 3 & SMT V, they're quite big, @FragRed .... Maybe there'll also be their own Mini or Mario one soon, though? I'm glad there's something at least

I'm not ready to enter doom and gloom status just yet. This pattern always seems to happen with Nintendo. Drought of information, anticipation builds, small announcement that is not what people wanted, backlash, hype train resets and builds up steam again, proper announcement, everyone is (mostly) happy. For the most part, I feel like Nintendo always comes through in the end, it's just a rough and frustrating road to get there.

@FragRed Heeeey about time someone joined me on the 'Mario Collections are fake' train. But I will say it's nearly impossible for Nintendo not to have something up their sleeves. They released 12 games between July and December last year. This year, we've seen a very slow first half, and only 1 game so far for the second half (well, 2 if Bravely Default II doesn't get delayed.) Just looking at their past history there's got to be more than we know, it's more a case of how much more.

@link3710 I always believed the Mario collection was fake. It doesn’t sound like modern Nintendo to slap three games onto a cartridge when they could sell Sunshine and Galaxy independently. Mario 64 would just be part of the slow moving online subscription service.

If it’s true that these mini third party Directs are to become a series in their own right, maybe that’s because Nintendo have little to announce themselves so are heavily relying on third party games to see them through. They could have a couple of first party ports in the works and that’s it.

When Nintendo told shareholders things were on track, they could easily have lied because we don’t know what they’re working on, so things internally get delayed and switched for ports instead, thus technically still getting away with saying something is on track to release.

@BruceCM The rumours people jumped through the insane gymnastic hoops to believe said we were to see all the big Mario announcements today, welp here is the Direct they predicted and there’s not a single sign of those big announcements. If the rumours said they’d come separate on another day, fine but they didn’t.

The way the tweet is worded makes it sound like there will be a few of these 3rd party Direct Minis.

If I had to guess, it will only show ~4 games but they'll actually spend a bit of time on them.

So like this one could be Bravely Default II, No More Heroes 3, Doom Eternal, and Apex Legends for example, and then we could get another one in a week or two focused on a different group of 3rd party titles.

@IceClimbers The Nintendo U.K. tweet confirmed it was to be first in a series, so I’m wondering if third party games is what they are focusing on to keep the Switch in the spotlight for the second half of the year while first party games are kinda in development turmoil.

Eh, I was always a bit skeptical we'd get anything, tbh, @FragRed .... We'd still expect to get something on the Mario stuff in the not too distant future, if that is indeed happening

@BruceCM I think there’s a national holiday in Japan this week, not sure if a single day or not but on 23rd according to Google, there’s definitely a national holiday so there won’t be any announcements that day. I’m just not expecting Nintendo to say or do anything significant this year.

Nintendo won't be announcing system selling games until they have systems to sell (or know they will by the time the game is released). Right now, it's nearly impossible to buy a Switch so I'm not holding my breath for anything great unless they are teasers aimed at getting fans excited with no real commitment on release dates.
