This direct was great - so great that by the end, I had forgotten about a few announcements because there were so many that floored me. Getting Perfect Dark and MVC2 (and all the other games + Punisher) in the same direct was fantastic - 2 of my favorite games from that era. Very excited for the vast majority of the games announced today, great swan song for the Switch. And Metroid Prime 4, finally we have seen it, and it looks wonderful.

Also, sort of unrelated but I loved talking to everyone on the live chat. It really enhances the experience when you’re talking to other people that share the same interests as you

@Novamii Yes our icons will stay alive. Hopefully someday they will be changed, but seems like today was not that day.

@Grumblevolcano The gap between NWC and Zelda will likely be just the Basketball update for Switch Sports and a heavy push on Splatoon 3's FinalFest.

Remember, the rumor was that Switch 2 was supposed to launch this holiday but then was internally delayed, so that may be why there's a bit of a gap and not as many 1st party titles quantity wise.

@IceClimbers It'd make sense if the DKCR port was meant for August and pushed back to January to better fill the schedule. If Switch 2 is announced in Sept / released in March, that'd leave only August, December and February (which is fine, new console literally next month to save up for) without titles, which isn't bad.

The basketball update was... weird though, what's with that timing? That game is like three years old.

@IceClimbers I'm thinking less about there being less but more about the spacing being such that there's room for more. Like it seems odd to release Mario & Luigi that early on in November if it was the final 1st party release of the year.

So what came to mind was early September general Direct shadow dropping something digitally which then got a physical release around November 21st.

Sharing my Direct thoughts... iif I typed out exactly what I said in the moment I'd absolutely get banned, there were tons of expletives (happy ones!) and screaming. It was almost everything I could have hoped for, and I deliberately set zero expectations for this one since it's near the end of the Switch's life cycle, and it's already been given a timeline with the successor.

  • Started so strong with a new Mario & Luigi game, never even considered they were working on one of those. The 3D art direction looks alright, kinda reminds me of 40s style cartoons where the foreground and background have distinctly different styles.
  • Similarly surprised that they went grave digging with a Switch Sports update, I love the game but it feels like too little too late at this point.
  • So happy they're remaking all three games in the original Dragon Quest trilogy, it was getting to the point that it was starting to worry me how long they were taking. Buying both 1&2 and 3, hopefully the pricing isn't too bad.
  • DK Country Returns... again again? Eh, already bought it twice, good for those who haven't though, game's a legit platforming all-timer.
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree looks nice, especially some of the new board mechanics, it felt like the series was getting stale with these static play boards, though I wish they added maybe one or two more. Still getting this.
  • Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - Not gonna lie I thought they were remaking the Oracle games when I saw the art style but then I saw Link jumping and realised it's a new game! Looks like they're really riffing off Tears of the Kingdom with the open-ended gameplay, reserving judgement on that. Unconditional day 1 buy though.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - what else is there to say lol, they absolutely delivered despite the troubled developments in early 2019. Looks like they've absolutely nailed the feel of the OG Metroid Prime games.

All time Direct, so glad I took the time out of my day to watch this with my friends. It's especially telling that Nintendo was able to pull so many games out of the alternate dimension that is their backlog despite the Switch being this late in it's life cycle.

  • Mario vs. DK Minis on the Move -> Mario vs. DK
  • DKC Returns 3D -> DKC Returns HD

As said elsewhere: very solid Direct (@Tayrailbridge: haha, I was only able to stamp 1/16th of my Bingo Card, haha ).

Just a few thoughts:

1.Very happy to finally see a little bit of Prime 4 (although I was a bit afraid at first, for it started of as the opening of a Halo game (which is not a bad thing of course, I do like Halo (especially the first one) but not something I would like to see too much in an exploring-oriented franchise - hopefully it will just be the heavily action oriented starting section of the game which will lead to Samus losing her powers (again) and being send through a portal? (seen in the last shot) (and some of the marines are trying to move an artifact into a ship - what maybe has something to do with the portal/rift?) to a lovely world bustling with flora and fauna (and as a bonus: the Mana Tree in the back - Visions of Mana confirmed, haha) - I really loved the ending of the trailer with the mysterious music and all - will definitely get that one somewhere along the way;

2.MIO looks very promising with its beautiful artstyle and interesting gameplay (I only hope it is not too fast and chaotic all the time) and was a prime (no pun intended) example of what trailers should be about - will keep that one close on my radar;

3.Normally I am not that much into the Mario & Luigi games (never really clicked with me as a kid that was a bit too much into JRPG's, haha), but this one does look like a lot of fun and had a great selection of charming characters and potential puzzle-mechanics - maybe this one will win me over to the franchise;

4.Also very happy that Stray is coming to the Switch, though I must admit I did miss the amazing raytracing-trailer from when it was first announced elsewhere a few years ago - let's hope the next console indeed is backwards-compatible - will wait for more news about the next console before getting my paws all over this one;

5.So far I wasn't really interested in the remakes of the Dragon Quest games, but damn, I just absolutely adore the HD-2D style and with the other 2 in the trilogy also being announced and even having Orchestral music, my future me will probably pick those up somewhere in the not too distant future;

6.Also looking forward to a bit more information about the next Zelda game, which at first glance looked a lot like a possible remake or sequel to "A Link to the Past" (maybe it still is a sequel now I think about it again). Really like that they are taking the Wisdom-route with Zelda as the lead, but hope (and I have no doubt that it wouldn't be the case eventually) that it will be a bit more than just "echoing" tables, beds and stools à la Minecraft (I am just hoping they just wanted to show of the mechanics, without spoilering it too much - just like they did with the first gameplay-trailer of TotK). The parts in the "rifts" looked extra promising in my opinion and maybe I am mistaken but did Zelda end up in a prison cell (again)?

7.Oowh and the future additions to NSO were a lovely surprise also, can't wait to play Perfect Dark for the first time (have fond memories of watching my cousins playing this game way back in the days) and will definitely replay Zero Mission and Four Swords somewhere inbetween games on my, even at the end of its life-cycle, ever growing backlog.

Good days to be a gamer .

Looking forward till the day we can game with all of our senses.

Finally got to watch. My bingo card was incredibly wrong. 😆 Apart from Zelda and Mario Party.

My takeaways:

1. Zelda yay! I was kinda expecting her game to fight with magic more conventionally. This puzzle platformer meets TotK-infinite-items concept will be interesting to see how works. Regardless, automatic buy and the top of the direct for me.

2. Shocked to see Mario and Luigi after so many Mario rpgs lately. Happy though.

3. Mario Party looks fun.

4. I'll probably get the DK remaster even though it is not quite what I hoped.

5. Not sure why, but the HD Dragon Quest didn't look great to me. I'll probably stick with the original also on Switch. Maybe I'm just tired of that HD-2D art style.

6. I was shocked there was no sizzle reel.

7. I personally am not getting Metroid Prime 4, but I'm glad the fans are finally getting it. Considering 2025, I am curious if it will be made to look better on Switch 2 than 1.

8. Very sad we aren't getting Wonder DLC (potentially); that would have changed it from a very good direct to the best direct for me.

9. fantasian, hello kitty adventure, memories of orbit, and stray all piqued my interest. Amd maybe Romancing Saga 2 remake.

10.. Everytime I see NES World Championship advertised I feel like it should have been on NSO. Also, it makes me really want Mario 35 back.

11. Pyoro didn't leak much but one of the things was totally false I think? No Reynatis in the direct.

Good direct. My wishlist will be very full.

Metroid Prime 4 2025..... so do people still think this isn't a cross-generation release?

It makes sense, very much the sort of thing you'll push out during a transition period. They want to have something to keep the more casual users engaged with Switch as most of the focus shifts over to Switch 2. IMO the only weird thing about it is that it wasn't more substantial than one sport

Woah! That's a good connection! I could see a Pokemon Dungeon somewhat soon, possibly a Fire Emblem remake of some sort, and I wouldn't mind a New Leaf HD. That would finish this connection!

Also Legends Z-A I believe is based off of X/Y, and SMP Jamboree seems island based (like Island Tour)

@skywake It becomes a question of when the console releases rather than anything else at this point. Based on Nintendo's normal announcement timing for games, Prime 4 is probably March 2025 (definitely 1st half of 2025 though we know for sure it's not January because DKC Returns).

Seems we've got 2 major potential setups:

  • Switch 2 launches with 3D Mario in Fall/Holiday 2025 (Prime 4 is a Switch 1 game)
  • Switch 2 launches with Prime 4 in Spring 2025 (MK9 is also Spring 2025, 3D Mario still releases Fall/Holiday 2025)

Judging by the Switch 1 fiscal year projections, the first option feels more likely.

WoomyNNYes

With today's direct, it feels like we're finally getting out of the shadow of the pandemic, and maybe starting to see the fruits of Nintendo developing for one console, rather than two.

@FishyS For August, I could see a Kirby game. Possibly early September for Kirby would fit as well.

August/September could also see some DLC of some sort

A shadow drop at the September Direct (assuming there is one) is also a possibility.

October/November still are open slots, however I am thinking November slot is more open than the October one.

For October, we could see a physical version of the shadow drop from the September Direct, or maybe some sort of smaller game/DLC.

For November, it could be some Pokemon remake or perhaps a bigger Kirby game (if Kirby doesn’t happen in August/September) coming at mid-late November. However Pokemon would probably have to be announced pretty soon if it were to happen at all, and it’s looking doubtful. And we probably would’ve seen a main Kirby at the Direct if it was happening.

December will likely be fairly empty for new content, but probably NSO and possibly a DLC.

February/March will likely include Legends Z-A. I see Metroid 4 being somewhere between March-July for next year. Also probably depends on when Switch’s Successor releases, as they probably will not be too close to each other.

I've been thinking about Mario sports games lately... And I can't help but wonder why Camelot soft hasn't thought about remaking Toadstool Tour and release for Switch. That's the game every Mario sports fan raves about when discussing mechanically deep Mario games.
