@jump doshin the giant deluxe and virtual boy HD would be awesome and would be a must-buy from me. I’m not even joking I would love that😂

@Blooper987 Those HD headaches and HD nausea will make it fly off the shelves.

In fairness I probably shouldn’t picked Doshin, it was the most obscure 3D Ninty game I could think of to be ported from the top of my head and I don’t actually know if it’s a good game or not.

@jump I would definitely put it up there with Cubivore, Uniracers, and Teleroboxer for most obscure retro Nintendo title. Just how out of left field any of those franchises would be to port is what would make it incredible.

@damien33ad I'm expecting 3D World to be the only remaining unannounced 1st party title this year.

Now that's pretty damn pessimistic. We've already had 2018 where the Switch had almost no big games. I really don't think we can have another year like that, which 2020 would be in your scenario.
In my mind they need at least 2 new big games for the fourth quarter. Not including ports.

I think 1 of 2 things will happen:

1. Years alternate between 2017 style and 2018 style (2019 was 2017 style, 2020 being 2018 style, 2021 being 2017 style, etc.)

2. Switch is so popular that Nintendo reuses the strategy they used in the Wii era, every remaining year of the Switch's lifespan is a 2018 style year but this time games are being stockpiled for the Switch's successor to prevent a repeat of the Wii U era (e.g. instead of the next 2D and 3D Mario games launching on the Switch, they are early launch window titles for the Switch's successor).

But... but... Emily Rogers said 2020 would be a big year like 2017 and 2019.

@Grumblevolcano Option 2 could work if Nintendo just focused on remastering games from previous generations for the remaining years on Switch. At some point Nintendo will have to put their resources into developing big games for at least the first year of the Switch successor and they may require bigger teams than ever before to achieve that, assuming the hardware is at least PS4 power. But I also hope that’s not Nintendo’s plan just yet or it’ll be a rather depressing several years of Switch games.

I doubt they're stockpiling games for switch's successor already since it's probably still several years away with an updated switch coming in the next year or two. Besides, they've learned plenty of lessons from the wii u and probably know how to prevent a repeat of it without a massive safety stash of should-have-been switch games. You never know with Nintendo though.

My guess is this year was supposed to be really big but the virus messed with the schedule big time. I think 3D world deluxe, the Mario remaster collection, and a new 2D Metroid were all supposed to release this year, but at this point we'll only get one or two of them.

Yeah the suggestion that they are delaying games for the Switch so they have games for the Switch 2 doesn't work for me since they Switch 2 is going to have ports of Switch games anyway.

@jump Switch has so many ports because the library started from scratch (i.e. no backwards compatibility), if Switch played Wii U games via backwards compatibility I think at most we would've gotten MK8 Deluxe for Wii U ports (MK8 is pretty much Nintendo's GTAV).

ImGrenadeMan

That's true. Wii u didn't get any Wii ports, and the one DS port that the 3DS got to my knowledge (Bowser's Inside Story,) sold very poorly.

@Noble_Haltmann the wii u is backwards compatible with the Wii

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Yeah they did, Twilight Princess another game people are talking about porting which would make 4 gens in a row.

Bowsers Inside Story sold poorly as the 3DS was dead at that point. Superstar Saga did fine.

It’s kinda counter productive since they were selling Wii games on the eshop anyway.

Look, it’s obvious. Nintendo is too busy working on the Switch Series XY, and its launch games God of War 2, Halo Galaxy and John Madden’s NHL Breakfast, to handle anything other than Wii U ports for the Switch, which has only got another measly four years left in its cycle before the hardware gets phased out.

Or nobody really knows anything. I enjoy the speculation as much as anyone, but it’s foolish to say this or that is being held back when we just don’t know. Hope we get a Direct soon! Need a fresh bag of hype...

Oh dang, I phrased my last post horribly! 😆

@1UP_MARIO I know, that was my point. Just as there were no wii games ported to Wii U with it’s backwards compatibility (except Twilight Princess as @jump pointed out) there will likely be no switch games ported to its successor if it has backwards compatibility with the OG switch. Fair point about Inside Story coming out at the end of 3ds’ already prolonged life though. I’d be curious to see how games like that sell while the console is still healthy. Anyone know how well Twilight Princess sold on Wii U?

From the looks of it they haven't had a full direct on a Friday in a long time, if ever. That makes sense, as Friday is usually when you release bad or embarrassing news. So anything that gives the 28th is highly suspect.
