It's reasonably likely since the previous New Super Mario Bros games did well. If they do this then I'd like them to ad something new to the game to keep things fresh.
I actually think a SMM-esque level designer mode would be a great solution to NSMB's problems. It would force them to get more creative about new gameplay elements and gimmicks because if we want recycled gameplay elements now we can just do that ourselves. Then we can take those new gameplay elements and use them in esoteric ways as we can in SMM and that would keep the games from feeling like boring rehashes.
New Super Mario World is something I've been wanting for years. I really wanna see the Cape Feather (or whatever the official name is) brought back, as well as enemies such as Chargin' Chuck, Rex, and Reznor, a hidden Special World that changes the layout of the map and enemies upon completion, Yoshi able to be taken to almost any level (but maybe get rid of the flutter jump so it's not too easy), and maybe Bowser boss fights in a new-and-improved Clown Car that fires Bullet Bills, missiles, and Bob-Ombs that would have to be eaten and spat back out by Yoshi. I would expect them to carry over the 4-player co-op from NSMB Wii/U. Of course, I would also want them to include the Koopalings, but I hope they'd throw in some other unique bosses that aren't just the Koopalings or Reznor, like how the first NSMB game had Petey Piranha, the Monty Mole that drove the tank, and Lakithunder (I think that's his name), just to name a few. I'd also like some post-release DLC that actually adds new worlds instead of just being the same level themes with redesigned layouts as seen in New Super Luigi U.
I don't see how they could really retire NSMB. Well I mean in theory they could, but it'd likely only be different in name only so there'd be no point.
How likely will we see a New Super Mario Bros game on NX? It's been almost 3 years and we should get a new game in this series, New Super Mario Bros. 3. Nintendo should also consider a New Super Mario World game.
Or how about a Super Mario Galaxy game!?

inb4 they make Super Mario 3D Galaxy and it's an entire game of this:
I think they will do more in the series but probably leave a few years after Mario Maker.
They'll have to make the next game really impressive to sell it though. If it just looks like another entry that's as similar as the 4 we've had, I'd have no interest in buying it.
They'd either have to come up with a really cool new art style or just make the games a lot better, like SMW better.
I'd be all for a new 2d Mario on NX, as long as it doesn't use the same New Super Mario Bros game engine. Something about the character models and designs of the New Super games really rub me up the wrong way.
I'd also like them to have new themes for the world, Grass World, Desert World, Ice World etc.are getting dull.
My theory though is while they sell a lot of copies, nobody buys a SYSTEM for NSMB (at least not a home console...portables are possibly another story). Though I can't think of any way to get numbers to back this up, I feel it's likely that big 3D Mario entries sell more systems. However, they're not everyone's cup of tea. People who buy the console for Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash, or other games without being into 3D Mario will still buy NSMB once they own the system. WiiU system sales were pretty abysmal when NSMBU came out, and I think this is what Nintendo didn't understand. They probably just looked at the numbers and saw an easy-looking solution without thinking that through.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
