@redd214 XCX really is a great game. The world design is top notch, it's got beautiful graphics, incredible scale, likable characters, awesome enemy design, enjoyable story, great music, and some truly epic set-pieces. The major downside though is that it's too big for its own good. I poured 85 hours into the game and realized just before the final chapter that I was basically screwed because I didn't level up one specific trait that is never mentioned in tutorials or gameplay and is buried beneath several layers of menus. And by that point it was too late to go back and grind to an appropriate level. It would have been possible I guess, but it wouldn't be pleasant at all. One day I hope to actually finish it, but at this point it would just be too tedious. Again, it's an awesome game if you know what you're doing, but it is just so overwhelming. So I agree, a new IP with the same epic scale as Xeno but without all the unnecessary complexity would be a dream come true.

Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game that badly needs a Switch re-release, if largely to fix the problems it had. It's not even that it's a bad game by any means, but it could've easily have ended up one of the best of the decade and it wasn't. I put 140 hours in and I still don't know exactly how to feel about it. And I appreciate the complexity and the genuinely bold choices it made in several categories (making a JRPG that isn't at all focused on its main story feels almost surreal considering most of the rest of the genre), but they backfired just as much as they helped the game.

@Octane I don't know the reference myself. Is that a reboot or just a similar premise?

2. A hybrid platformer/beat em up game, something like God of War or Knack. This really doesn't need a new IP though because there's an existing IP that could cover this genre, which is Donkey Kong. This would be perfect for a 3D line of DK games.

I like the idea, but didn't they already do that with Wario World? I wonder why that never got a sequel.

3. A sandbox style action game taking place in a city. Think something like Prototype, Infamous, or Watch Dogs. Nintendo really doesn't have a game like this in any way, shape, or form.

Is is one other thing I think they're missing, and not many Nintendo IPs have an urban setting. How about a detective game like Lego City Undercover? Or something Earthbound-inspired?

@Buizel I've been wanting Nintendo to reboot the franchise. At this point however, I'm just glad someone is allowing me to chop up people with a katana in a feudal Japanese setting.

I assume because Warioware and Wario Land (and whatever that Disguise game counts as) existed, and we didn't need even more Wario. That's another game that wasn't great but could've gotten a sequel that was though.

@kkslider5552000 I think most of the bigger problems should be fixed in a sequel. But still, I love Xenoblade X so much, it's my favorite game between the three Xenoblade games and Xenogears. It's just so fun playing it, I can sing its praises day in and day out. My hottake is that the game is worth buying a Wii U just for it.

I think Nintendo lacks a truly killer RPG series. I know Xenoblade is there, but let's be honest. It's no Final Fantasy or Shin Megami Tensei... A brand new RPG series from Nintendo would be cool to see.

I agree. I loved the first Xenoblade on Wii, but X on WiiU just didn't do anything for me and I strongly dislike Xenoblade 2. The franchise started out very strong but got progressively worse in my opinion.
If Nintendo wants to create a flagship RPG series, they definitely have to keep it more simple. Xenoblade went way over the top with stories, characters and gameplay mechanics.

I know Sushi Strikers is only being published by Nintendo rather than developed but I would still say that is kind of a new Nintendo IP.

Oh it's definitely a new Nintendo IP. They've been treating it like one of their own on Nintendo Direct and their website for sure! I for one hope it sells really well.

I’d be up for StarTropics coming back as well.

Both of these would be awesome.

Sushi Striker combines three of my favorite things: Nintendo, Japanese anime and sushi!

True - I always found it strange that Wario had so many spin-offs. Why wasn't it ever "Waluigi Ware"?

On that note, it's obvious which character needs his own spin-off series... Grand Theft Waluigi?!

You know, I don't think it matters what to hope for, but to hope that it is good, whether small or big game. I mean Splatoon was a pretty cool new IP that seems to have all the hallmarks of a good game. Makes sense instantly, highly identifiable style, unique twist on a tried and true format/genre. They pulled it off well. I also liked Xenoblade too. I missed X because the WiiU smelled like a corpse and never got rid of the smell, but it also looked solid, thus solidifying itself as a series wtih 2 solid games(now 3).

To ask for a genre I am hesistant. I think I'd be happy with something explorative at the core. Stylistically something like tomb raider and uncharted, but with a twist of fallout 3 and finding vaults with unique circumstances. Really create some sort of colorful world.Something like climbing a big mountain range and in nooks and crannies are villages, hidden caves, mines and the like. Where is the conflict? I don't know. Getting to the top because an evil dude made animals into bad guy monsters, and his evil device/magic is at the top.

I could nintendo doing an RPG similar to the OG fable. Light hearted, bright colors, not really super open world, but enticing and charming. That or I could see a creative game like a god sim/building game. Dwarf Fortress and minecraft and terreria are still pretty well beloved games.

I'll echo @Shadow-Wolf and point out that Nintendo already has a killer RPG that emphasises accessibility in Pokémon. Xenoblade is simply the other side of the coin, catering to those who love masses of systems.

Love the @hirokun idea of an open-world, story-driven adventure, using the Zelda BotW engine in a Tomb Raider or Uncharted-style adventure.

Or how about Wario Souls?

@Buizel nah. It’s obvious what career the shady Waluigi belongs in: Waluigi Ace Attorney.

@Ninsushido It's funny you say "they went over-the-top", because Xeno in general has always been an ambitious series that works to go above and beyond. Xenogears and Xenosaga (Xenoblade's spiritual predecessors) has very complex (and convoluted) stories and lore spanning the course of 10,000 years and incorporates a ton of Gnostic/other philosophic stuff into the game. The latter still being very prominent elements in Xenoblade. Though I haven't played Xenosaga yet, Xenogears also diverges from your usual ATB SNES/PS1 RPG with the combo system and playable mechs to put its more unique spin on battles.

Xenoblade shifted a lot of the story scope to gameplay, creating really complex and layered combat and explorative worlds instead while still providing meaty stories (except for Xenoblade X).

But aside from that, Nintendo already has flagship RPG series. Aside from Pokemon which is literally one of the biggest video game franchises period, they have Mario & Luigi and... Paper Mario. They already got great RPG series, they should just make use of them.

@StuTwo certainly. He could even simply "wahhh" instead of shouting "objection".

Just thinking now of all the Mario characters that have had their own spinoffs... Yoshi, Luigi, Wario, Peach, Toad... But has Bowser? I think the best we've had is certain parts of the Mario RPGs.

At least 2'8".

Harmonie

@StuTwo Lol. But Waluigi is obviously not supposed to be a good guy, so he would be like playing as one of the crooked prosecutors, or a crooked attorney? That would be an interesting twist, but obviously it's not going to happen.

Besides, Waluigi is a spin-off character, created as such like 18 years ago. Nintendo doesn't seem interested in ever using him outside of general-Mario series spin-offs at this point.

Tbh, now that I'm thinking about it, does Nintendo really NEED new IPs? Can't they just pull a Kid Icarus: Uprising where they revived an old property and basically made it into a new IP?

Also, their older, neglected franchises like Golden Sun and F-Zero needs another spot in the limelight.

Speaking of Waluigi, and also of genres Nintendo hasn't really dabbled in, has anyone noticed how Nintendo has never released a dedicated dating sim? I mean, Fire Emblem has elements of the genre, but it's still basically a Tactical RPG at heart.

Due to the scarcity of the genre in present day, I think Nintendo should try their hands in the beat-em'-ups genre. It's been forever since we've seen a big release of the kind (yes, I know Raging Justice exists) so, it would be a great time for Nintendo to bring out a new IP to put it back in the limelight.
