I mean, I don't know a ton about most newer games in the genre, but I can tell you that classic Final Fantasy is a fairly safe bet if you've not gotten to all of them yet(at least the SNES/PS1 era games). I've also heard of a lot of praise for that Sea of Stars game that came out recently.
I have the Live a Live remake, which I've heard a ton of praise for.
Tales of Vesperia has a combat system very similar to Star Ocean Second Story.
Arguably the best Tales game on Switch considering the state of the Symphonia port.
Wow from 2018 and I got that hidden somewhere on the shelf.....
@EaglyBird Eh, rpg elements are in most games these days. Some folks consider Zelda games to be a series of rpgs. To which...I think those people are numpties, but hey...they're entitled to their opinion.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,529 games (as of November 20th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 3 games (as of November 23rd, 2025)
@Dimjimmer so how good is it? Story starts how long before second one? I love turned based rpgs, but as a gamer if the game is good doesn't matter the gameplay

@EaglyBird I'm with you, Zelda games are not rpgs. But I would contend that a leveling system and stat progression aren't enough to qualify a game as an rpg. The origin of the genre was Japan's attempt to streamline the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game for a video game audience.
In my opinion, turn-based combat is the defining gameplay mechanic of an rpg. Just like the tabletop game, you take your turn for movement and combat, then the enemy takes theirs. From there you have the leveling system and stat progression system that has trickled down to the many sub-genres of rpg and is ubiquitous in the industry because..."make number go up" is as addictive as loot boxes are, regardless of what genre that mechanic is coupled with.
Tactical/RPG? (Fire Emblem)
Action/RPG? (Ys)
Dungeon Crawler/RPG? (Diablo)
MMO/RPG? (WoW)
Roguelike? (Shiren the Wanderer)
RTS? (StarCraft)
First Person Shooter/RPG? (Borderlands)
CRPG? (Disco Elysium)
Third Person Shooter/RPG? (The Division)
Soulslike? (Elden Ring)
Open World/RPG? (Cyberpunk 2077)
Strategy/RPG? (Romance of the Three Kingdoms)
Roguelite? (Hades)
Dungeon/RPG? (Etrian Odyssey)
TTRPG? (Gloomhaven)
Metroidvania? (Castlevania: SotN)
I am waaaay out of my depth, but couldn't you argue that turn-based combat is an attribute of trad pen&paper RPGs because real-time combat would be impossible?
I'm not saying real-time combat disqualifies a game as an rpg, I'm just saying it's derivative and is using a subset of elements from a traditional rpg. Which is why is said I view turn-based combat as the defining mechanic of an rpg. Dungeons & Dragons was introduced in 1974. Where as the action/rpg genre didn't take shape until Rogue in 1980.
I know you already decided on XC3, but if you ever get the chance; play Bug Fables.
It’s a genuinely great game and my personal favorite game of all time

Well I purchased xenoblade chronicles 3 and even though I'm only 3 hours into the game, Holy $sheet I'm in love. The soundtrack, the combat, the story, the characters, man so glad I made the decision to get this one. Hell I even shed a tear already for those looking for something different in a rpg telling you this one DOES NOT disappoint 😍

I’d take a look at the Persona series. RPG setting that you have to complete the game within a year of the game time. You collect personas like Pokemon. But you can also combine them to make different and more powerful personas. Depending on your relationship with a person in the game, it can add to how powerful you can make them.
Great music, great stories, and great characters. Games you can easily spend over a 100 hours each.

SMT Nocturne is my kneejerk reaction. It's not plot heavy compared to most JRPG fare but that makes it all the more memorable.
If you want a decent action RPG then the Trial of Mana remake should fit the bill.
There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.
