No reason to fix what is not broken. I think MK8DX DLC would be a great choice. More Grand Prix, more racers, good times. MK8DX is still selling very well, no reason not to capitalize on that.
But if they went the new game route, call it Mario Kart 9, but make it "Super Smash Kart". It's time to expand the roster of racers beyond Mario and a couple guests. I want to play as Shulk, driving a Pokemon theme'd kart, on an Animal Crossing Track, while throwing a Master Sword at Snake who is driving a Kirby Kart all the while Metroid music plays.

I would pick a brand new entry over DLC. As much as I love Mario Kart 8, I feel that the next time the guys at Nintendo work on a new Mario Kart project, it should be MK9. Given that MK8D has proven to be the Switch's best-selling game (even outselling the Wii U original by quite a lot), I would be perfectly happy with MK9 being on Nintendo's next console. I would be fine with MK8D DLC, but again, I would prefer a new game. Also I doubt that DLC was even a thought over at Nintendo - in my opinion, they would've had such a thing come out by now.
@MarioLover92 True the DLC would've been out by now considering it was released in 2017. @Heavyarms55 I would love that game! But alas, I think that's going to be Nintendo's new IP for their next gen console.

Or an open world adventure.... But yeah, I would love a game that brought in even more Nintendo franchises. Or even Sonic!
@rockodoodle I guess but Sega works for all platforms and I don't see why they would stop there on the switch. Sega would want all platforms and Nintendo wouldn't like that.
EDIT: Wow after all that I didn't realize Sonic was in Super Smashbros. Sorry rockodoodle!!!)

I would pay to race as Sonic! Not sure where to draw the line as far as bringing in new characters. Kirby would be really awesome. Pokemon and other Zelda characters... Star Fox and F Zero.
I'm kinda glad its taken a while for the next Mario Kart. I think you have to do something really special to even attempt to top Mario Kart 8. That game came out 6 years ago and its still one of the most visually appealing games I've ever seen, and in many ways perfected the formula for the series. Not to mention when the Switch version came out, it came with all the DLC.
Considering Mario Kart 8's unending success, there's no reason to rush a new one out. Right now, I want Nintendo to put out other racing games, especially from long neglected series. Like I was just thinking today how many racing series Nintendo has, its quite a few (even ignoring one-offs like Kirby Air Ride and Donkey Kong:Barrel Blast). For that matter, maybe the Mario Kart team can find the time for a new IP or Arms 2. All good things imo.
I personally think Mario Kart 9 could be the game they use as the next Twilight Princess/BOTW, a Switch game that's used for the launch of the next system at the same time.
Since MK8D still sells millions of copies every few months I doubt Nintendo has begun development on MK9.
I disagree. Sales of both the Switch and MK8d will peak soon. I also feel that in part, mk8d’s continued success is be of timing. There is a general lull across platforms, especially Nintendo. There are new buyers be of COVID. This is a natural fit for casual gamers new to the system.
If they intend to keep the Switch for three years as they recently stated and still generate revenue, they will need big releases. So, besides Zelda, Mario remakes and some niche titles dear to Nintendo fans, what will sustain earnings for the next three years?
I'm in for a new F-ZERO and Excite Truck.
Now that the big rockets are shot it's time (and chance) for the smaller guns (hopefully Pikmin 4 and Chibi-Robo).
