I loved the gamecube controller, and I got one of them for the switch as a guilty present couple months back. I play with it constantly mainly due to the Joy-Stick. Feels so good to move it in a circle hundreds of times. I'm not ashamed to say I would just play with the controller as a stress reliever on some of the bad days. It helps lol
@Xyphon22 Well, personally, I wouldn't say I liked it "for" the story (as you say, Mario games aren't story-driven). It's about how it brings a variety of elements together gracefully to create a satisfying, cohesive experience, which I felt Galaxy 2 failed at. I still fully understand why someone might enjoy SMG2 more, though. At the end of the day, they're all good games.
And yeah, although I really liked Yoshi in Mario Odyssey, World, and in his own games, they were honestly my least favorite segments of SMG2. Those timed tongue grabs just killed me.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
@Ralizah I will absolutely give Galaxy credit for that. I will always, ALWAYS say that Galaxy is the perfect mix of story and gameplay in a video game. I value gameplay over story any day, but Galaxy's mix was pretty much perfect. Like I said in my previous post, Galaxy's plot presentation is miles better than in 2.
I'm extremely excited to re-visit such an experience in as little as 14 days. Wild. Still very much wish Galaxy 2 was present in the collection, though.
Something is definitely up with the lack of mario galaxy 2 in this collection. This is supposed to be a celebration of all things mario since it's the 35th anniversary and no where in the entire direct was Mario galaxy 2 mentioned. They acted like the game didn't even exist. Now i see why alot of people probably felt the original was superior. For one thing it was totally new and fresh! The first mario game of it's kind! The sequel was basically more of the same. The surprise and awe just wasn't there anymore. It's a great game and all but the new wore off after we already played galaxy 1.
Still it was a seriously missed opportunity to not include it. However, remember when mario all stars on snes had a rerelease that also included Super mario world? Perhaps DLC is in the pipeline and there may yet be hope for galaxy 2 to be added later.
I loved galaxy 2 better. It didn’t have the story or the big hub but it put you strait in to the game. It had much better level designs. Yoshi was great and had power items. The difficulty was ramped. I found galaxy 1 too easy.
I love all mario games but I put Mario 64 on top. It’s the main reason I still play this on a tube tv and the 64 is hooked up to it.
Mario has the best long jump and move set and controlling him with a n64 controller feels perfect.
All Marios are great and day 1 purchased for me. Hate ranking them. Here it goes
1 SM64
2 SMG2
3 SMO
4 SMG
5 SM3DL
6 SMS
7 SM3DW
8 SM64DS
@Xyphon22 I think each of them has their own strengths. I like all of them. I definitely think Galaxy 2 is my ''least favourite'' though. It's great, but it felt more like a level pack than an actual 3D Mario game. It's stupid how the little things, like a good HUB, can make a difference. I also think that the music and themes in Galaxy were done better than in Galaxy 2. Just look at the box art; one screams ''Mario in space'' (= Galaxy), and the other one is ''Mario in.. clouds? but with Yoshi?''. I got the impression that most of Galaxy 2's levels were platform levels somewhere high up in the sky with a ton of cloud backgrounds, whereas Galaxy 1 had definitely more ''space'' themed levels. So that definitely gave each their own vibes I think. And, even though this is hardly present in Mario games, I felt that the story in Galaxy was better presented. A quite melancholic and dreary story for such an otherwise joyful game.
Galaxy 2 had a higher proportion of linear and 2D levels I think. Not that I hate those, but I expect 3D levels in a 3D Mario game. Again, this made it feel more like a level pack than anything else.
Sunshine remains my favourite I think, because I like the consistent themes throughout the levels. I really appreciate it when developers restrict themselves in some way, because that usually leads to creativity.
@Tendo64 in take it you beat it in the end and if so congrats. It’s not as easy as just letting the treatment work.
Yeah the steroids and weight gain thing is something people don’t really understand. I reckon it’s because people’s idea of cancer patients comes from movies where they are normally portrayed as skinny bald people. It’s something I have mentioned to friends to expect when they were diagnosed as it’s not talked about with cancer so it comes as a surprise to people. I only learnt about it after watching my Mum go through it.

I'm not going to bother with this collection either. If they were properly remastered with added QoL improvements, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But as it stands now, Nintendo only did the bare minimum to make them work on Switch. Not worth my $60.
I like how the rumors were calling this collection a remaster. This is less work then they put into those remakes of Zelda OOT and MM on 3DS. At least those had updated character models.
"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" Optimus Prime
@Slowdive I do wonder if maybe this wasn’t Nintendo’s initial plan for the collection, but the pandemic caused problems so this was hastily slapped together with some touch ups just so they had something to release. It seems to be pretty weak when compared to the efforts put into everything else that’s been revealed.
