Now that we knew Virtual Console for Switch isn’t going to happen; Do you think we will see porte or even remasters of older games? Generally I am not a fan of this practice but there are so many good games I’d love to play again. The main reason I bring this up is I want to replay WindWaker with my niece but it’s a pain having to set up the Wii U again. I’ve actually grown hate the Gamepad after playing on the Switch now...
I’m only in my 20s but thanks to my Father and Brother I have every home console released since 1986 from Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft. All in working order with working games after starting to game on PC I miss being able to play older games on consoles without having to set them up.
So I ask those who are more knowledgeable about this subject is it possible? Is this perhaps why they dropped the VC or was it just laziness on Nintendo’s part? I could see them wanting to milk remasters like Sony and Microsoft and the bigger devs.
@Historia I am sure we will see some and there are some I know I would love. But what ones we will actually get is wild speculation. Nintendo didn't kill VC out of laziness. Most people think they did it to support indie developers and encourage people to buy their classic/mini consoles.
I'd like HD ports of
Xenoblade Chronicles
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.
And just straight ports of
Advance Wars 1, 2 and Dual Strike
All 3 Fire Emblem GBA titles.
I'd also love HD updates of Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness - supporting modern Pokemon mechanics and Pokemon Bank support. (and while we are talking about dream worlds - a 3rd game in that line)
There are plenty of others that would interest me too, but those are the big ones off the top of my head.

I think we will see Skyward Sword HD at some point, the other two big console Zeldas from that era have been remastered so it's the last in the trio. I also wouldn't be surprised if Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD return in some form as well.
As for other games I would say that NES, SNES and GB/C/A games will just be available through the online service. They are still popular in their current form and a remaster would need most of the games to be completely redone to the point where they might as well make a new game. Nostalgia sells anyway, it makes the gamers that have returned to Nintendo after years have an incentive for the online service.
N64 I'm unsure about, most of the games don't look great and if Nintendo is going to release a N64 Mini this year they wouldn't release anything on Switch. DS and 3DS games would need remasters, they would need to make them work on one screen, and with no requirement for 3D, a touchscreen or microphone. We're already seeing that with the World Ends With You remaster and I doubt it will be the last we'll see on Switch.
I was hoping for a Gamecube VC so Nintendo and other companies could easily port over tons of Gamecube games but now I don't think that will happen
If Nintendo is going to remaster any of their old games I would expect it to be from the Gamecube and Wii. I won't be suprised if we see the Galaxy games, Pikmin 1+2 and
maybe some other games from that era.
These are just my personal speculations but we'll see what happens. I'm already suprised that they have dropped the Virtual Console when there was obviously interest for it. I don't see why they would include it in the online subscription when people were paying for individual games in the past, but we don't know everything about online yet so it may improve....hopefully?
I would like to see these games in HD ports:
1. Harvest Moon Magical Melody (Gamecube)
2. Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
3. Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
4. Dillon Dead Heat Breaker (3DS)
5. Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Dungeon (Wii)
I'm not expecting too many other Wii U ports but I'd expect a decent amount while more developers begin working on Switch games.
I think Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and Xenoblade Chronicles X deserve a chance on Switch, and they would sell decent amounts, not MK8D numbers, but okay.
...I also just need a portable Pikmin that isn't Hey Pikmin
If we're talking about games that need remasters, an HD remaster of Kid Icarus: Uprising could be one of the greatest games of all time in my opinion. Gyro + Stick aiming for the sky, and proper ground controls on land (again with gyro) could take one of the best 3DS releases and make it feel like a modern AAA console release.
@OorWullie I would die of happiness if an HD bundle of Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 was announced for Switch. Those are easily my two favorite games of all time, and seeing them in glorious HD would be a dream come true.
I also would love an HD remake of the original Xenonlade Chronicles. With the second one performing pretty well on Switch I think there's a chance of a remake succeeding. And boy does it need a facelift!
Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.
I think we’ll get a decent grab bag of remasters from the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, 3DS and even the DS as the years go by. So far Wii U games have been the priority because they’re easier to port but there are plenty of others with potential.
They’ll just want to space them out. Like we’ll certainly see the 3DS remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask and the Wii U version of Wind Waker but when Nintendo has a console that could live for 10 years why rush them all out the door? There could be a five year gap between Zelda games so drip feeding remasters helps to keep the series on store shelves and in magazine articles etc.
Aside from Zelda games I certainly expect the New Super Mario games to be remastered in HD and the Metroid Prime trilogy (probably a year after 4). The Paper Mario games would also be a very popular choice for remastering.
To answer the original question though - no I don’t think the potential for releasing remakes/remasters is why they’re dropping the VC service - they’re just too expensive/risky from Nintendo’s perspective for that. I think they wanted to give indies some space on the e-shop and they probably analysed the sales figures and decided that most VC games (outside the obvious ones) just don’t sell well enough to be worth it. Those games are better utilised in other ways.
Super Mario 64
Star Fox 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Mario Superstar Baseball
Super Paper Mario
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
Duke Nukem 64
Donkey Kong 64
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Star Wars Episode I: Racer
Mario Party 3
BattleTanx
BattleTanx: Global Assault
I am sure the Switch will be getting many more Wii U ports. It seems to be doing well for the system and the developers and publishers have benefited from it. The Switch is selling very well and it is easy to port these games over.
Games I expect to see:
Twilight Princess
Wind Waker HD
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros
Yoshi's Woolly World
Batman Arkham City

I did not play the Star Wars game but the rest are all high on my list. I get a lot of hate for this but the Mario Galaxy series in my favourite of the Mario game.
I just want more core Fire Emblem games Switch is perfect for them. I’d also like to see Kirby’s Epic Warn on Switch it’s ine if my too games of all time. I also agree with the Polemon Colosseum games although I think this would come after Pokémon RPG in 2019.
Another Paper Mario or Luigi‘s Mansion type game would do nicely as well as ports please Nintendo.

I don't know how they couldn't be worth it. VC was just an emulator at it's core. That's the hard part already done. Once the emulator is running, it should be pretty much no effort to just sell roms that play on it thru the eshop (obviously third party being a bit different situation).
@subpopz This is what I thought I’d kill to play the games on the VC on TV even if it was “letterboxed” and looked horrible. I was just hyped for Switch but everyone kept hyping VC and when I thought about it the possibilities blew me away. Like you said hard part done any sales would be profit...
They must be an ulterior motive to generate more income. I have no issue with them making money but I like to own my games subscription services etc will drive me and people like me away.
@Heavyarms55 How did I manage to forget Mario Maker!?
I would rather see a sequel though, but it would include everything from the original. I enjoyed the new costumes, levels and updates. A port of the Wii U version would feel a little dead at this point
