LockAndLuke

Hey everyone.

As the title asks I'm looking for some good RPG-esque games to get into, I've played and loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and also Breath of the Wild, but they're the only truly big and lengthy games that I've played in this type of genre, minus the likes of Pokémon Let's Go.

I'd love some more games that I could really sink some time into, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Octopath Traveller is a very good RPG that looks great. Skyrim and Dragons Dogma are really good action RPGs. Okami HD is also a fun Zelda-like game

Action game with long life? I've played botw three times, but have more than double the hours in Splatoon 2. So, I reccomend Splatoon 2. I love BOTW and Splatoon 2.

Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana

A 50-60 hour action/rpg. Exploration encouraged, though not quite open world like BotW. Combat and inventory systems similar to dungeon crawlers like Diablo III. A colorful cast of characters, great music, etc.

The only downside? It's a slightly up-rezzed port of a PS Vita game, so it won't wow you graphically.

YS VIII, Okami HD, and Final Fantasy X all top the list for me (bear in mind though, that FFX is much more linear than these other games, but it's just as good).

Dragon Quest Builders & Shining Resonance Refrain were pretty good too, though not at the level of the above mentioned, or what you've already played.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Um, it's a pretty straight port of the PS4 version, which added quite a bit of content to Vita original I played it 1st there & I found it more than worth buying to replay on Switch....
If OP wants arpgs, there's the obvious Bayonetta 1 & 2, as well?

I'm not really sure quite what sorts of games you're looking for, @LockAndLuke ....? Tales of Vesperia?

Oh yeah, Tales of Vesperia would be a great pick too, now that it's been mentioned.

Didn't get it on Switch myself since I've played it on 360 in recent memory, but quality wise it's right up there.

@LockAndLuke Well your title made me think of Bayonetta 1 & 2 but I think that's not quite what you're looking for (though still highly recommended).

I haven't played it myself (yet) but Dragon's Dogma comes highly recommended and is somewhere between XC2 and BotW from what I know.

The Baldur's Gate games coming in September are old school RPGs, but I think you might like them.

Lego City Undercover is a lot of fun if you want something on the easier and more comical side.

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is basically obligatory on this kind of thread.

Octopath Traveler may be 2Dish and turn based, but it's got a love of exploration in it.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is another I haven't played, but might suit you.

Starlink is an open world space shooter, and the digital version on sale is easy to recommend. Incredibly fun, if a bit repetitive. Avoid the physical if you don't want to have to deal with toys.

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles, LA Noire, Terraria, Minecraft, any Final Fantasy, YS VIII, and Shining Resonance are all also viable picks depending on what you're looking for.

Oh and if you don't mind shoddy ports, ARK: Survival Evolved or Assassin's Creed III are on the table.

EDIT: Oh, and if you decide to branch out into other genres, you've got far more options. Let me know if there's anything else.

Would it have made more sense if I said the PS Vita was the platform of origin? Ys VIII originally released on the PS Vita 2016 then ported to PS4 in 2017. My point is that the game was designed within the limitations of portable hardware, much like Final Fantasy Type-0 or Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. As a result the backgrounds and character models are chunky, regardless of how much you up-rezzed them.

Well, it's important to realize that actual content was added as well as graphical tweaks, @Magician.... Anyway, your video shows Switch gameplay, so he can judge that for himself

Exploration, action, RPG, lengthy? How about Dark Souls Remastered? It is certainly has all those elements. It's definitely not for everybody, though.

Personally, I'd say Octopath Traveler, Ys VIII or Okami are easier to recommend. They're all far friendlier.

Alternatively, if you can hold on that bit longer, Dragon Quest XI is just around the corner. Certainly one I'm looking forward to.

Gonna give another vote for YS VIII.

I'd also like to recommend Dark Souls. While this one certainly isnt for everyone and its quite challenging, its an amazing ARPG.

@ReaderRagfish, while it definitely is an ARPG in terms of the progression system for building your character, it's essentially one massive boss rush otherwise, and isn't necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when someone is looking for a game like XC2 or BotW, IMO.

With overworlds to explore, dungeons to dive into, various towns to discover, and more of a deeper narrative focus, games like YS VIII, Final Fantasy, Okami, and Octopath Traveller all hit many more points of similarity than MH, which just has the one or two.

How has nobody suggested Monster Hunter yet?

I'm not sure if the OP is looking for something they could sink a thousand hours into? If that's the case I'd also suggest Warframe along with MHGU. Both games have a steep introduction curve. But if you're looking for something long term both are excellent.

You might be interested with "The World Ends With You" and "Shining Resonance: Refrain" perhaps? Both pretty long RPG, and while TWEWY feels better to be played on DS, it's still excellent.

Shining Resonance I haven't played to give too much words on, but shouldn't be too bad? Average at least.

Edit: I forgot to add CrossCode! Played through that game on Steam, and whenever it hit Switch, that will be one of the best RPG to be played for sure! Very excellent

@LockAndLuke Disgaea 5, the Final Fantasy titles, SAO Hollow Realization, Octopath Traveller, Okami HD, Dragon Quest Builders 1/2, Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria 1 and 4, and not really RPGs, but big, meaty games with loads of content, Sid Meyers Civilization 6 and Cities Skylines. Minecraft has added quite a bit of RPG-like mechanics in recent updates too.
