Topic: Is switch a good alternative to other consoles?

Based on what we know is coming this year alone and the advantages switch has over stationary consoles do you feel switch does a good job of being a good alternative to picking up a x86 twin?

We all know switch misses out on a lot of AAA third party support but there is still quite a bit of confirmed titles and excellent games to jump into right now..it's a very different system that's for sure. I quite like that it's very gamer focused unlike the direction Nintendo went with Wii and Wii u.

Personally my 2 cents on this matter is a yes with a but, that but is that one would have to be content with missing out on games with realistic visuals, I've noticed switch does have third party games (every mainstream console should) but they are cartoon/stylized games since it's much easier to get them to work on switch.

At $300 switch is around the same price as other systems so it's buying weight is the same. It has a lot less games but it's important to keep in mind it's 4 months old.

Your thoughts?

Calling it an "alternative to other consoles" kinda makes it sound like it's not a gaming console itself.

As with every entertainment electronic, I'd say you should get if you want to play the games on it.

A ps4 is also an alternative to Xbox one and vice versa

For me, Nintendo Switch is Primary video games that i Must have with another older Nintendo machines.
I don't care with AAA games that mostly made for Men and mostly nsfw games.
I don't care with OMG ULTRA HD Realistic graphics like FF XV, Instead I felt disgust for some reason. Perfection sometimes went wrong, couldn't satisfy certain peoples.
I only care with games that looks fun in appropriate way, Cute enough, Cartoonish and have very high replay value so I will never get bored with those titles.
Nintendo give me what I want, what I like.

It depends on the question. Would I ever recommend anyone to just play a Nintendo system and nothing else? No. I wouldn't say it's a good alternative. More of a second choice (or the other way around if you really prefer Nintendo's games above everything else). I went Nintendo-only last gen with the Wii, because I didn't have enough time to invest in a second console, and I missed out on a lot of great games, so I'm glad I went back to the Nintendo/Sony combo this gen, and it works for me.

If you like Nintendo games, absolutely.

I still think a Sony + Nintendo combo is the way to go, though.

Switch is not a good alternative to PS4/XB1 but rather a fantastic addition to them. Having both is the best option as Switch will mostly be getting games that aren't on PS4/XB1 and vice versa. It's pretty much confirmed at this point that 3rd party support on Switch is going to be rather nonexistent so Switch will be the Nintendo console while PS4/XB1 is the Sony/Microsoft + 3rd parties console.

PS4 + Switch is my combo and I recommend it

It's a very subjective topic that's for sure. People who aren't interested in a lot of switch's offerings will say you need another console and people who have enough to play will say it's a fine alternative as long as you know what you are missing.

Maybe you want to use the word "supplement"? Because as an "alternative" to a PS/Xbox/PC, NO. Heck no. You would miss 90% of the games that come out every year, some of which are really really good.

If you have one of the other console or a PC, Switch is the PERFECT supplemental console, I think.

I'd recommend either a PS4 and Switch combo or a PC with Steam and a Switch combo. If you really can only have one console, then I'd say get either a PS4 or Switch depending on who's games you prefer.

Haven't you heard? The Switch is just another kiddie console, it'll never be as great as a PS4 or Xbox. It's a bigger fail than the Wii U.

Having owned most of the consoles from the last 25 years I would say that Nintendo Switch is a fantastic piece on it's own right now. But that is if you take it as what it is. It is a portable console that you get mostly for Nintendo games.

For me Switch is the best right now, because with two kids, new job, communal politics, other hobbies and other stuff there is not too much time for gaming and the portability is the difference maker for me. I can easily pop it up and play few moments of Zelda or Shantae before a meeting or when kids are still awake but in their beds.

I really really want FIFA to be good, because for me that is one of the biggest gaming franchises. I also wish that they manage to squeeze that Steep on the system. Mario + Rabbids is going to be my go to Nintendo game this fall I think. I think it'll beat even Odyssey for me.

EDIT: Haven't played my Xbox One for a month or so. PS4 occasionally, but mostly for few rounds of Disc Jam and Battlefront and that's about it. Switch I use almost daily.

I would like to add that alternative doesn't mean you can't have any other thing that plays video games. A 3DS is quite nice to have too.

Counterpoint: yes, it's a great alternative and has more than enough games for the average working person.

This is crazy subjective. How much free time do you have? What kind of games do you like? Do you care about having the most advanced graphics ever? Is portability a factor for you? Do you have any other hobbies? Have you played all the hot games in the last generation of consoles? Those things will all influence your answer.

If you have no interest in Skyrim or you really want "AAA" titles like CoD or Forza, the Switch is not really a good alternative, just a good supplemental console. If you love Nintendo games, indies and slightly older ports, it absolutely is.

What about Nintendo exclusive that you will never find on other consoles? Switch is a good console on its own, if you want a console to play the same games from PS4 and/or XOne but you want one called with another name from a different brand no, you probably will not like Switch, but that does not mean it is not good for what it is

Its the best secondary console to go with.
Owing the PS4 and Switch is the best option for any gamer. Or do the trifecta of PS4 & PC & Switch.

Many people don't have two consoles. Be it pure choice or budget restrictions. I am a Switch only owner, like I was a Wii U only owner and a PS3 only owner before that. (I'm not considering portables here, since I've always own a portable to go along my consoles, PSP, PS Vita and buying a New 2DS XL next week just for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Metroid: Samus Returns)

It all depends on the games you enjoy the most. I like Sony exclusives (God of War and Uncharted being two of my favorite franchises of all time), but I grew up with Nintendo so I always find myself coming back to Nintendo's systems. I've never regretted it.

The power of the systems is also something to consider. I don't care about ultra realistic graphics. A game is not good because it looks good. In this time and age, most game companies only care about graphics and most of the time the gameplay gets lost in the way... Nintendo is the other way around. They try to make its games as good looking as possible, but the gameplay and the fun factor are the main objectives. So all the talk about the Switch being "underpowered" is of little concern to me.

Going only with the Switch will mean missing and lots of exclusives and most AAA multi platform games, but if you can make peace with that, you'll find Switch is a very unique system with tons of personality. I love mine as I've never loved a console before.

(Edited to add the bit about the power)

I could buy a PS4 too, I probably will sooner or later just to try it, but honestly I don't feel the need of any otrher console except Nintendo ones. Many years ago I liked a lot Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 too, but I think now Sony consoles are not the same as before, they have lost a lot of appeal to me, even though I am still definitely more interested in Sony consoles than in Microsoft ones. Sony + Nintendo is for sure a great combination but right now I am fine with just Nintendo.
