@rallydefault Nintendo's 20 million estimate is only for the current fiscal year, so right now they sold around 2 million for April - June and need to sell at least around 18 million during July - March.

@rallydefault Because it's 20 million for the current fiscal year only, not total, therefore they are something like 17 million short...

@electrolite77 & @Mountain_Man I'm not forgetting it as this was my case, I bought for no particular game but for the overall offer. That said what I meant by these alone, was that these will tip over the edge that many people. More like they are a reason to attract people but will they attract that many people who are not already convinced... I might be wrong but while they have some power to attract people, Smash may, but I think let's go Pokemon will likely have a lesser effect than let say the new Pokemon next year.

Be interesting to see what happens with Let’s Go but, as someone who isn’t a fan of the series, I’m inclined to think the opposite. That making a game deliberately targeting a wider audience will work out very well. It will still sell to plenty of Pokefans in lieu of the game next year but I think there’s a big potential market out there beyond that.

@RETRO_J
They literally did the same numbers in the previous fiscal year. So it's not that crazy.

Here's to hoping they have PLENTY of hardware/software stock for the holiday season, then (software primarily being Pokemon).

They have a healthy install base this time around (more than the Wii U EVER had), so I really do think Smash/Pokemon can be "system sellers" to families and teen/middle-aged holdouts thus far.

I mean, Switch during holiday 2017 had only Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Kart, and Mario if we want to count the bigger games. (Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, ARMS, and Mario + Rabbids aren't really big). Third-parties weren't totally on-board too (and while they still aren't now, it's much more than before).

This time we have all those games plus some third-parties AND the juggernauts of Pokemon and Smash. Mario Party is a bit in-between big like Zelda and small like Xenoblade, but that's also a nice supplement to Pokemon and Smash. And we still got quality games that fill out gamers' tastes like Mario Tennis, Octopath, and Monster Hunter. Not to mention all the Wii U ports that are selling pretty damn well.

People tend to overhype and downplay things according to their own narrative, and while I am admittedly also guilty of that 100%, it's still important to consider everything from beginning to end and weighing the actual paces of stuff.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

As for being close, let's set this straight. In the same fiscal year, so minus the launch month, it sold 15.05m* units, which means they're projecting a significant increase of nearly 33%. Now I appreciate you like to point at other consoles second year success but it's by no means unprecedented for the second year to be less than exceptional. I mean, just look at the Wii U..

Fair call, I misread the numbers and didn't take into account the launch month. Even so, it would still be pretty unusual for the second year to be weaker. Case and point here is a list of the change in hardware sales in the second full calendar year. I can't be bothered doing the comparison for the first full year on the market but the point is largely the same. Console sales rarely slow that quickly.

DS: +89%
Wii: +46%
PS3: +29%
PS4: +19%
Wii U: +18%
360: +16%
XBOne: +9%
3DS: +7%
PSP: -1%
Vita: -13%

A 15-30% jump in sales for their second year would be pretty typical. If anything I'd bet on it being a bit on the higher side given the continued interest in the platform, the "word of mouth" nature of it's success and the supply constraints in its first year. Things which should make it's trajectory look more like the Wii and DS and a bit less like the 3DS and XBOne.

And in any case, drawing conclusions for sales over the whole fiscal year based on performance in the slowest sales period? I think it's a bit of a stretch. Sure they're down 5% or so this quarter vs the same quarter last year. But I don't think that's much of a shock. The same quarter last year was the tail of the post-launch hype. How well it does over Christmas will not only be more representative of how well it's travelling but it'll also be the bulk of their sales for the year. That'll be the real test.

If Nintendo truly wants to sell tons of switchs it just needs to make family sharing a thing, my family would definetly get a second one if all our games crossed over, even if the feature was part of the online service, it would be great

Well excuuuse me princess

The profit margins are very small for hardware though. Nintendo's earns much more from games. So it is more probable they cut the price of the switch than starting giving away games for free.

I also had DOOM, L.A. Noire, and Skyrim that holiday on my Switch running.
And Disgaea 5 Complete, and This Is The Police and lest not forget Sine Mora EX.
Many more even had 1-2-Switch, Snipperclips Plus, Super Bomberman R, FIFA 18, and Ultimate Street Fighter II for christmas, or downloads like Puyo Puyo Tetris, Minecraft, Rocket League, Stardew Valley, Oxenfree, Thimbleweed Park.

When the switch first came out I got one I thought it was great and had a few great games then things slowed down a bit for game I like (well we can't like them all) in December I got Exoblabe and wow that's a great game since December I have not touched my PS4 he to the stead steam of games it's just a costly book stand.

I can't wait for the online service to see what that brings and looking forward to late 18/19 When a lot more games that I like and coming, at present I'm playing Titan Quest a game i played on the PC and its great just how i remember it, amazing port love the game.

Also does computer stores that can install the GPU for you don't exist? (I mean it's like... everywhere here unless you are in the middle of nowhere, I guess)

(And I think for viruses, that's... really your own common sense, really. Most of the time I think what can cause viruses are quite obvious... and you are obviously trying to do something not quite legal with it)

It's quite clear they are resting on their laurels. Last year they released not one but two game of the year contenders (both went on to win multiple awards!). This year, third party support is improving, indie games are thriving and yet, they have only announced Mario Party, Smash Bros, Labo 3 and Let's Go! Pokémon. The Switch has a fine, expanding catalogue of games to encourage new folk with diverse interests to pick up a Switch...but I just can't see them getting off their bums to make 20 million consoles. I mean...that's a lot of consoles! It probably depresses them thinking about how much effort that is to make.

@Snaplocket Oof, I don't mean it that way. Was meaning to say that viruses often (not all) are on the common sense kind of thing, and often are from illegal sites, not implying you did it (and more of meaning on the general public on that one). But anyway, that was misspoken of me, so I apologize. I understand why my words can be understood that way.

And there's not even those mom-and-pops' style of computer stores? o_o whoah, I'm... actually quite surprised there. My hometown was quite backwards in term of technology it got (Pretty much late compared to other province's capital cities, and my own country itself is quite a 3rd-world-one), but even non-official computer stores are everywhere... (and the people there usually can install things).

But yeah, in that case I guess I understand that consoles are still nice in that regard, very plug-and-play. Although I would still argue that the nice thing with PC/Laptop is that you can use it for other things than gaming (although maybe cheap laptop + console are nice enough combo)

darkfenrir

darkfenrir

@Snaplocket Yeah, but still, if I did insult I should apologize since if I didn't it made me no better than some people I know.

It is true though, if you only want to use it for gaming, I would imagine a laptop for work + a PS4 or whatever console will be far cheaper than any other thing.

@GrailUK The Game Awards is going to be very tame on the Nintendo front this year.

@Grumblevolcano I know right! They just haven't tried this year >.< They need to have GotYs coming off an assembly line dammit!

@Snaplocket Not really, Smash Ultimate comes out too late to be eligible (Xenoblade 2 wasn't eligible last year and that came out earlier in December than Smash). I think Let's Go will win a few awards like best family game and best portable game but apart from that nothing from Nintendo will win anything.

It's the type of cpu in my laptop. AMD's current gen cpu's are called Ryzen and there's been a second gen Ryzen released this year. Mine is first gen. It has no dedicated gpu just the cpu. Modern cpu's have what's called integrated graphics

A few things. Firstly, having a GPU on the CPU is far from a new thing. Case and point the G3220 has an Intel GPU built in as does pretty much every GPU in Intel's lineup for almost a decade now. They don't push the GPU spec anywhere near as hard as AMD does but they certainly do exist.

With AMD's Ryzen lineup? It is true that the chips with integrated graphics came out after but it's not entirely correct to call them "second gen". They basically have two product lines that exist side by side. There's a lineup of CPUs without integrated graphics which have higher raw CPU performance and are designed for people who are going to buy a dedicated GPU. Then there's a lineup of APUs which are more budget orientated and have integrated graphics. And you need a GPU of some kind, if your machine lacks one you literally wouldn't be able to have a monitor

Lastly, the G3220 is pretty damn low end. I mean single threaded performance isn't bad so paired with an entry level graphics card? It could be more than enough for last-gen games. I wouldn't expect much out of it at all. Buy the cheapest new PC off the shelf at an electronics store and it'll probably do better. But don't do that because the very cheapest stuff is horrible value....
