Topic: If cloud saves were free, would you still subscribe to NSO?

Because it's my primary reason for subscribing, between having a backup and transferring data. What about you?

I like cloud save but I mostly subscribe for online play in mario maker 2, mario kart, animal crossing, etc.

I also quite enjoy the retro games.

Even if almost none of that was on NSO, I buy vouchers every year which makes the basic NSO subscription effectively free.

Yeah, because I do use the online component in a few games, not to mention being able to make properly-timed voucher purchases.

So, entirely coincidentally, I just now noticed that you can transfer save files between consoles on the same network. . .

@Gryffin Some games don't have cloud save so that is very necessary.

Cloud saves are free on Xbox and most PC storefronts, so it seems rather mercenary of Nintendo (and Sony, to be fair) to be charging for them.

What's particularly cheeky on Nintendo's part is that it's the only way of backing up your save data from an unmodified console at the moment, where Sony at least let you back up to external storage. If you've invested a lot of playtime in a game, you can't afford not to have NSO, lest something unfortunate happen to your hardware.

I don't think it'd hurt to also allow backups to SD card, at any rate.

@Gryffin nice main post padding.

I pay for NSO just for online access. I don't touch the NSO classic games. The cloud save bakcup is a nice added feature.

edit: the best way to transfer is console to console via bluetooth since NSO cloud has like 140 games that it doesnt support (nintendo support's NSO FAQ page points to a page that has a list of those unsupported games.

I'm just in for the retro games tbh. (And occasionally I will play smash with friends.)

does it work with Bluetooth? I just did it for a save file, and it required that I have them both online. I actually don't have Internet still, from Helene, so I tried connecting them just to my router, you know as LAN, but they wouldn't stay connected unless it then progressed online. So I had to use my Wi-Fi hotspot. How do you connect them with Bluetooth?

@Matt_Barber Xbox cloud saves are free? That's great. It should be the default, and I think it's manipulative for Sony and Nintendo to charge for it. But I guess in context, Xbox's choice is commendable.

I bought my Switch because of the NSO announcement.

Yes, I want it for the games! Cloud saves are a bonus part of it to me.

@Gryffin The console to console transfer seems to be down with local wireless blutooth, the process does require an initial internet check to authorize the the wireless transfer. So, you do need an internet connection for that moment. I was QUITE surprised to discover this when I transferred from a launch switch to an OLED.

Yes, they are. Before we give Microsoft too much credit though, it should be noted that they were the ones who came up with the idea of charging for online play first.

Oh, and for those who subscribe to NSO for the vouchers, it's going to be a tough year coming up.

The only reason I have NSO is for the cloud saves.

The cloud save feature has been handy for me a handful of times, but the reality is that I would never get rid of NSO for any reason unless I lived in some alternate universe where the Splatoon series never existed.

Cloud saves can be handy but for most games that I have finished I wouldn't really care if I lost the save data. I like NSO mostly for online gaming, retro games and game trials.
