Topic: How To Properly Turn Off The Switch

Every time i power down the switch in handheld mode and then dock it, the switch powers back up on its own.

All i want to do is charge it but it's impossible to get it to stay switched off when docked unless i power it down while in docked mode, and then attach the controllers.

I've switched of the mode in the settings which turns the tv on when the switch docks.

Any suggestions?

I have to hold the power button down once it's docked and then when the prompt comes us for power options choose power off. Not sure if there's an easier way.

My other Switch is a WiiU.

There should an option in the system that allows you to decide if it turns on when you dock it

Agreed. Mine also does this annoying thing: If it's docked and I turn off the TV, the Switch turns on. This happens every night when I turn off the TV and go to bed. Then I have to remove the Switch from the dock and perform the manual shutdown. Let's face it: This thing was pulled from the oven a few minutes before it was ready to be served.

Say what? I do not have that issue. That sounds very strange.

I would presume the settings for reacting to your TV would solve this.

@Burning_Spear That sounds like an issue where "sync power state with TV" is on, but the TV's power state is being sent in an unexpected way. Might just want to turn off the sync power state thing. It should react to getting a power signal over HDMI but the TV (or receiver, or switch, splitter, matrix, or other powered HDMI devices between the TV and Switch) might be sending power state signals during shut down. I have a 2x6 matrix switch that sends constant on/off/on/off/on/off signals with a bright blue screen whenever I turn an input (Switch, PS4, BD player) off. It just runs that way all day. But only on one output. So I turn the screen off manually. Some HDMI stuff works weird.

@Scottwood101 Are you "turning it off" or "putting it to sleep'? The machine is meant to stay in sleep mode permanently (like tablets and phones), and not ever actually be turned "off" at least not while docked. Some people prefer it to be "off" but it's just not really the way modern electronics are intended to be used, not even Windows 10 machines that want to remain on to run overnight updates & downloads. All modern electronics are designed with an intend that they stay in sleep forever.

If you're putting it to SLEEP, putting it in the dock should make the screen turn on to a black screen with the "charging" status indicator at the top for a second or so, then back off. If you're turning the machine OFF, yes, it will turn on when you dock it. That's not a flaw, it's the way it's designed, and I don't think they're ever going to "fix" that. Only a very small portion of customers are actively trying to turn it "off" and it prevents updates and news feed updates from working. The thinking behind it in this case would be you might want it "off" handheld because you're concerned about battery consumption, heat generation, or radio interference (airlines, hospitals, secure environments, even beyond "flight mode"), but when you dock it you probably want downloads and news updates to resume overnight. It stinks if that's the way you'd prefer to use it, but you have to keep in mind the way you want to use it isn't really the normal way people use it, it's not really a bug or design issue, it's just that your intended usage is different than the common use for which it's designed.

Now if you're putting it only in SLEEP, and it's turning fully on and staying on....that's something else, that's not how it should be working. It should just light up a black screen with a white "charging battery" icon for 1-2 seconds and shut off again.
