@isaiahhoyt when one tells me Nintendos last two machines are a fluke and the psp was mainly owned by casual players they have drank the cool aid. The Wii was the cheapest console and launched with the right games at the right time. The ds was innovative. The psp is one of the greatest hardcore jrpg machines I have ever owned. You are just repeating what you hear instead of research and critical thinking.

Yes @faint i know very very well that the psp was a great system and i did NOT say any of those system are bad the psp where are those 70 million psp owners they defintily did not go to those 20 million vita owner and just as i have said the 3ds has less than half of the ds and i LOVE the ds but the seventh gen was a fluke those 100 million wii owner didn't go to the wii u because there are only 10 million wii u owners do you know why video game console have not sold as much in the past cause most of them went to SMARTPHONES yes some games do interest them but not enough to commit to buy a video game console and the xbox 360 it sald 83 million console the xbox one 10 million Well jeez i wonder where those 73 million xbox 360 who didn't buy an xbox one owner went because according to you the seventh gen wasn't a fluke and what about those 83 million ps3 owners and according to you the seventh gen wasn't a fluke either and where are those 43 million missing ps4 owners went and the psp that sold 82 million consoles where did those 70 million psp owners where did they go cause the didn't go buy a vita. You know what we should fill a missing persons report for all those missing owners cause the didn't buy any of those console hey i know what happened they all bought smartphones cause angry bird and candy crush is free along with other terrible games so there i love the wii not my favorite nintnedo console but it has some of the greatest games ever created like xenoblade and the ds one of the greatest nintendo handhelds ever if not tied with the 3ds has a damn good library of games and none of my comments has any thing to put down any of these systems but nintendo and video game consoles has lost its popularity because why play on a dedicated video game console when you have a smartphone that play free games can make calls and everything the only reason why this site exists is because most users love Nintendo's games not a single one of us would play on Nintendo consoles if it weren't for their great games hell most of us wouldn't play vieo games at all if it weren't for Nintendo games this post would not exist

@isaiahhoyt they are still playing their old systems I would think. i also believe a lot have moved to pc and steam. I still don't consider it a fluke. To consider the whole last generation a fluke would mean the ps1 and ps2 are also flukes biased on your reasoning. I mean where are they and why haven't they picked up a ps4 am I right. I also think this gen in general is not that great yet.

This... is... increasingly incoherent, you guys. Can we get some proper punctuation up in here? And maybe some paragraphing?

He and I are just arguing with each other. It doesn't need to make sense unless you want to join the argument.

@faint Yes I know some of them are still playing the old systems but any casual that bought the wii who I know who bought the wii either got a smartphone or sold their wii so I really don't know where you are coming from but from personal experiences I don't know a single casual who has kept either their wii or kept it and bought a smartphone and touched their wii in recent memory

When I was at work yesterday and we were talking about my self employment plans, I was asked what type of games I preferred the most. Though I own all current consoles I stated Nintendo.

The response was "Oh yeah, those are retro aren't they? Yeah platformers..." and it went on with the bloke pointing out quite a few things but the fact he put retro and platformers with Nintendo says a lot. And he's not a gamer, but probably the target Nintendo are perhaps looking to bring back to the fold.

But at the same time, I wonder if that's an attitude a lot of people have and if so, that could be a big downfall to attract younger generations.

@faint
Yea, I do. Which is why I asked for coherency lol

@FragRed
Yea, I think that's pretty accurate. Platformers and Zelda. If lots of people out there are like me, the last Nintendo system they owned was the N64, and then they switched over to the PS2. The Gamecube had some nice games, but didn't do too hot, so I never really paid it much attention aside from Smash Brothers. And then the Wii had that "casual box" stereotype going against it (which, at the time, I COMPLETELY believed, as well). I came back for the Wii U, so I have some actual modern Nintendo knowledge, but as we can see from sales numbers, most people did not.

So yea, most people still think of Nintendo as N64 and earlier, and anything more modern is almost entirely filtered to them through magazines, websites, and (worst of all) internet forums/comments that are usually pretty negative unless on a Nintendo site like this one. It's no shock that Nintendo has almost zero social momentum going for them.

@faint I know the 3ds is highly successful along with every other Nintendo handheld but for a Nintendo handheld its the worst selling so Nintendo is not as popular as they once were

The 3DS is about to become the third most system sold of all time in Japan. It underperformed in the west though. But it's true for the entire japanese industry. Western third parties have become so big they dictate the market. It would need billions to change that trend and I don't think any japanese company or the NX will be able change that. I think the first objective of the NX will be to keep the japanese market alive.

@bitleman bingo! Look at this guy using critical thinking instead of tired old fluke/kiddie Internet cliches. You are 100 percent on the money sir. 👏

I just had a thought for a potential ad campaign for the NX. Picture this.

Two people sitting on a plane. One is going on about this great Nintendo game that just came out. Talking about how great the game looks on his TV. Just really going on and on about shaders, anti-aliasing and all sorts of technical jargon.

At this point the second person who's a bit older and in a suit just politely nods. Says that it's a long flight and wants a bit of quiet for a bit. Second person then puts in some headphones, plugs them into the NX and starts quietly playing something like Zelda:BotW with a smile on their face.

Fades to the logo quietly. "Nintendo NX. Anyone. Anywhere"

@skywake That would be good; however, the reality will be some kind of cringy living room setting..

How Nintendo can more adequately appeal to today's youth

They should have made it something that nobody would react to if they see you playing it in public. All the advertising and games in the world can't save it if it just looks like a children's toy. Nobody bats an eyelid when someone pulls out a mobile phone and starts playing Pokemon Go on it, but there would be quiet or not so quiet judgement of the person who pulls out a 3DS. I would play a lot of games on my 3DS in public if it looked like a smart phone but as a 35 year old man, I am not going to get my 3DS out in public.

Everyone likes a bit of thread necromancy.

Anyways looking back at my two posts in this thread? I think I was on the money here. When everyone was talking about CoD and so on? I chimed in by simply saying that in order to appeal to kids and teens they just need to be different. Not just from their previous products but also from the competition. "Nintendoes what Sony Don't" was the line I used.

And the second bit I posted here was the start of an ad campaign. I ran through my head to think of something a Nintendo product like the Eurogamer leak could do that nothing else could. And guess what I described? A dude playing a home console style game like Zelda on a plane. Headphones on.

Ok, so the dude doesn't really have a smirk on his face. And the game was Skyrim not Zelda specifically. Also he's a fair bit younger than the other dude who was basically just there as a prop. But still. Nintendo are stealing my ideas.
