I got this game for his birthday but he is not able to pass Act1 as once he got the red key the boot of the car is not opening! any help?

I did that already but it did not help, followed the instruction 3 times following the walk trough but the boot does not open (and I have the red key!), how frustrating, I read there are glitches but is it possible that is only in my card? How can I get a replacement from Nintendo?
