Topic: Has the Switch sold well so far?

@8Darky The dock won't make a big difference in price, so I fail to see the point. If you want a handheld only Switch, just buy the Switch and don't use the dock, or like @Maxz suggested, sell the dock.

I don't get the argument in selling the Switch without a dock just to cut the price. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the Switch's appeal to be a "hybrid" console? Plus, $300 is not really that bad when compared to a $400 PS4 Pro and a soon to be released $500 XBOX One X. If price is going to be the biggest factor besides quality/quantity of games in the decision making between the big three, the decision should be pretty easy.

@SuperLuigiTime
You are talking about the premium versions of the systems.. xbox one is cheaper than the switch.
I think everybody thinks the switch is priced a little high but if it was priced too high they wouldn't sell as well as they are now so we can conclude Nintendo priced it appropriately to remain as profitable as possible.
When they decide it needs a price drop to buffer sales, i believe all the switch needs is a sub $300 price point to increase attraction, so with mere $20 drop at $279 we can see Nintendo priced the console excellently for their profitability.

@Inertiacreep As a home console, the Switch would be a little on the steep side (probably an understatement). However, as the most powerful dedicated portable gaming console of all time (by some margin), I don't think the price is too unreasonable at all.

It's the accessories that I really feel are an uncomfortable amount of money. Though with third party options arriving, this is becoming less of an issue.

I'm sure the Switch will come down in price eventually. But given that they're selling through nearly all available stock (with Christmas yet to come), it's hard to argue that they currently need to.

The manufacturing cost of the switch is roughly $260. This doesn't include shipping nor administration costs.

A stationary switch is probably the only way to reduce costs enough to warrant a price reduction. Removing screen, battery and dock should push it towards $200-250. The dock alone isn't enough though.

@8Darky Like I said, not really, because the dock isn't that expensive. You'd be looking at changing the entire system if you want to drop the price by $100 right now.

The price they charge isn't just a reflection of the production cost though. It's a combination of that and the price that they believe the market will bear. It's also a marketing decision as to how they want to position the console and want it to be perceived.

Right now they want the console to be percieved as a premium product and as a 'hybrid'. The people who are willing to pay the extra are the most valuable customers to have anyway because someone who wants to 'nickle & dime' for the lowest possible price will probably be someone who buys fewer games. So why create and position a cheaper SKU when you can't make enough to meet existing demand?

The dock doesn't cost $100 but removing it (and the joycon grip) can allow Nintendo to position a SKU as being worth $100 less to consumers.

There haven't been official sale total numbers in a while, but based on where it was in July, it's probably around the 6-8 million mark world wide. It's been selling in the 40-50K range in Japan alone each week and topping the sales charts consistently.

@Maxz When you have a PS4 Fifa bundle for £150.00, there needs to be a little concession from Nintendo. Nintendo fans don't need convincing, most of the market do. Your view on the Switch being a little on the steep side is something I agree with. People generally don't give a damn if its plug and play or not. It still costs what it costs.

Edit: Did some research and that was a timed deal. Bundle now £200.00

@Shellcore Nintendo doesn't need to concede at all.. how long has the ps4 been out? The switch is a brand new system tf you talking about? Prices adjust to market demand and obviously Sony's demand has come way down while Nintendo is about to be the best selling console this holiday season.. Nintendo doesn't need to concede to s***

@Inertiacreep Congratulations for swearing twice in a post about sales projections. Great chat.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I've seen more than a few Switch ads on tv and I don't even watch tv anymore. As bizarr and "fake" as that sounds, my mum is always watching tv in the room next to the kitchen - door's always open. So when I look in, I can see whatever's on, and there's been more than a few occasions where the Switch advertising Mario Kart Deluxe and Splatoon 2 have appeared on screen. Surprising since she typically watches black and white films or tv dramas. The Switch shouldn't even be a thing for her - but whatever. It just meant that when she came home on the day it arrived, she knew exactly what it was when I was holding it in my hands. And that's saying something, since she's 50+ years old and always despised the thought of her son playing video games.

Never take anything I say seriously. S'all you buddy. ;)
Mainly play on my Switch but I have 3DS, Wii U and PS4 as well.
Fave game series include: Pokemon, Smash Bros, Splatoon, Disgaea, Bayonetta, Dragons Dogma, Phantasy Star & Arena of Valor.

@Shellcore People are currently buying the system in almost higher numbers than Nintendo can produce, making pricing concerns currently irrelevant. If you're going to sell through your stock anyway, it makes little business sense to do so at less profit per unit.

There will come a time where reducing the price of the system will become a pressing issue for Nintendo. Certainly by Xmas 2018, I'd expect the system to be a fair bit cheaper (which may also sync up with lower manufacturing costs).

But for now, the biggest issue facing the company is simply producing enough units to sell in the first place, not deliberating on much to sell them for.

@Maxz Just my viewpoint on it. Not hard to sell through nearly all stock when there isn't that much to begin with though.

Maxz

@Shellcore Well yeah, which is why Nintendo's biggest issue right now is producing the units. A price drop in order to 'sell more units' is meaningless if there aren't any more units to sell.

@Maxz Totally agreed. They need to get their act together before Chrimbo!
