Topic: Has anyone have issues with the fan on the switch?

No. I'm still using a Switch I bought at launch. I mean the fan comes on sometimes for maybe 40 seconds or so regardless of what game I play and even when it does I barely notice it. I look after my stuff though by cleaning it regularly. I still have the DS I bought at launch for God sake so no idea where these people are getting this from.

You look after your stuff you won't have any issues.

Yeah my fan has been having issues for a while and it needs to be replaced. This causes my switch to overheat a lot.
I just haven't gotten around to it because the fans my friends used on amazon ran out of stock and it requires me to take apart the switch itself which I much rather not do.

By the way for reference my switch is from late 2017 and I believe this problem came up last year if I recall correctly.

Good... good

I replaced the fan on my son's launch Switch last year as it was really loud - much louder than it had been previously. But, he plays with it flat on the floor in handheld mode quite often (can't hold it properly due to disability) so it was pretty gummed up with carpet fibres etc. I'm sure it would've been fine if he actually held it properly

I have an OG Switch, and I haven't needed to replace anything.
The fan is not loud unless I play a heavy game either.

Yes. My launch day Switch started having overheating issues in 2020. I wrote about them several times in these forums. The fan would get very loud and the Switch would shut down after 20-30 minutes of play, depending on the game. Some games played okay but some would make the Switch oveheat right away.

I opened up the Switch and did some cleaning and replaced the thermal paste, which was completely dried up. Didn't get to checking the fan because that's another layer or two into the Switch and I was terrified I would end up borking the whole thing.

The cleanup and repasting helped a little bit but didn't fix the problem. Ended up buying a new Switch. The old one can still run, but is too unreliable.

Can I just say, that dude in that quora post that inspired this thread is full of crap. From their experience with PCs you can expect a fan to last 3 years? What are they doing to their fans?

I think across all the computers and consumer electronics I've had over the years I think I've had at most three fans fail. And that's with some devices seeing fairly heavy use, even 24/7 operation for years on end. One was a 120mm case fan, the other was a small fan at the back of a stereo. And I tend to have around a 5 year upgrade cycle which hasn't always included new fans. I'm fairly sure some of the fans in my current PC are over 10 years old now

I'm sure people have had their Switch fans die, a <1% failure rate on a console with 100mill units sold still means 100s of 1000s of failures. And it is the only moving part on the Switch outside of the JoyCons so it's going to get the bulk of the wear and tear. Also small fans have to run at higher RPMs so they're going to wear quicker. But..... 3 years expected failure? I'm sure it happens, I don't think its the norm

The fan in our launch switch is obnoxiously loud in certain cases. Been that way for a couple years now. I don't think it's a design flaw of the switch or anything like that, probably chalk it up to my kids not being so gentle with it over the last 5 years. But yeah certain games make the thing kick on so loud it almost drowns out the game audio

The fan in my launch switch got extremely loud (after about 3-4 years). I don't think it ever caused the Switch to overheat/crash, but I replaced it anyway because it was so unpleasant. And anecdotally it does seem to be a common complaint.

@JasmineDragon If you've got in as far as replacing the thermal paste then replacing the fan really isn't that much harder. If you've already bought a replacement you don't have much to lose in attempting a repair on the old one!

@chardir Yeah, a lot of people told me afterwards that I should have dug deeper and taken the fan out. One of these days I want to do that. But at the time this happened I was losing my vision from cataracts, and I was genuinely scared I would mess something up because I could hardly see anything even with a giant magnifying glass.

@chardir
Mine too.
And i noticed the fan was working differently depend on the game you played.
When i played Go Vacation (A Wii remastered game on Switch) in both docked and handheld mode, the fan was spinning quietly but when i played something heavy like ACNH or FF X/X-2 or Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles, the fan made noisy sound. But sometimes the fan made lesser noisy sound when being docked as i felt the fan was working pretty hard and blowing some air through the vent.

Yeah, my day one switch fan squeals in the morning for a minute, then i tap the back a few times and it quiets down. This started happening about a year ago.

But then I play it at lunch at work and it doesn't happen.

This happens EVERY morning.

It's just like me in the morning having to stretch my muscles (and complaining) for the day ahead.

Yes, my day one model's fan likes to make lots of noise when I first start. But calms down after a minute or two and then doesn't happen again for that time.

I bought my Switch in November 2017 (?), and it's in great condition. Looks good as new with none of the bending/cracking/Joy Con drifting I have heard so much about.

However my fan is terrible and always has been. It's docked to a TV 99% of the time and will almost always make so much noise - it's louder than the volume of the TV.
Going to the home menu for 5-10 seconds always calms it down but it does get annoying. Especially when it isn't hot in the slightest.

@blindsquarel does your brother still have his launch switch? The reason I asked is the comment you put on my question you said had his launch switch. Did he sell it or does he still have it? I am curious

Tay205

@iLikeUrAttitude what fan did your friends get? I thought to ask so I can have a idea of a good fan to get in the feature if I have to replace it.

Since I have no overheating issues or a message pop up saying overheating and needs to shut down I am not going to replace the fan right now but I always like options sooner than later.

@Kimyonaakuma I wonder if the 2019 models fan is the same? I heard the 2019 model runs cooler then the launch units. I wonder if Nintendo fixed the system running so hot in the 2019 model

@SwitchForce will a dry tooth brush clean the vents instead of using a vacuum?
