@Woomy_NNYes - I found the custom setting, where you can choose the assists, cheers for the tip.

In other news, really enjoying the game, so much content to get through! The graphics are really impressive too - during a sprint race a squirrel ran across the road!

Looks good, the handling models of the cars are good - I really hope it sells well, cos it shows how great a racing game on the Switch can be.

@Mii_duck Last I checked it was placed at #30 on the all digital charts. That was 2 days ago.

What is everyone preferred mode, graphics or performance?? I have yet to use performance as I like my graphics and it runs more then we'll enough. I'm almost afraid to even try performance lol.

I only use Graphics mode, but I've never been that concerned about FPS.

The little details like the squirrel running across the road (I swear I saw it!) still make me smile.
And was that the flash of a guy welding in one of the skyscrapers being constructed in Dubai?

@msm2000 - I've just switched (no pun intended) to using the right analogue Joy-Con stick as the brake/accelerator. Prompted by needing more control for the drift events.

Still not ideal though, the sticks are so light, lacking in resistance, that it's tricky to find a balance with your thumbs.

Out of interest, what difficulty level are people playing on?

I'm finding at 'professional' level I can win from starting 16th over 3 laps, but at 'expert' I'm happy to scape into the top 10.

Admittedly I'm not using practice and just diving into races but it seems a big step up.

It is possible I'm not that good at racing games...

I guess I'd say I'm not a noob with racing sim games, but you sound like you're in a similar place with the difficulty.

Professional is getting too easy to win. However, I usually do time trials for the tracks before I race them in career mode. Too often, Practice time is barely enough time to learn a complex track and figure out the fastest line through complex areas. If I don't do time trials, then I likely will suck just because I didn't know the the turns. I do use rewind, but rarely more than a few times. I prefer racing with in-car camera view, and often I make contact with cars I didn't think were close enough, and hit rewind.

My first Expert race seemed the same as Professional. Then, the next race was super tough to make any progress passing. (Maybe Expert didn't take until the second race?) Worried I wouldn't earn enough XP points, I went back to Professional. I'm on my 4th season, and once I'm in front, it's easy to take the fastest lines, and I lead for the rest of the race. I wasn't that good for the first season or 2.
I did 2 seasons in Touring. I'm on my second season in Street. The city races are the races I've wanted to do the most. I will probably try expert again. But I'm not confident I'll keep it on Expert -maybe dabble.

Oops. I've been treating the race starts like an arcade game, holding the gas pressed at full revs through the countdown (like a sucker ). If you wait to hit the gas at the last moment of the countdown you get better grip, a faster start, and can pass a few AI. That's a pretty big deal when there's no qualifying and the game starts you in last place - especially in expert difficulty.

@Woomy_NNYes - I shall try playing around with my starts, cheers for the tip.

I've unlocked and just finished the first Grid championship. On expert my highest finish was sixth, apart from a time trial where I came first by 0.27 of a second.

On expert the other cars seem simply faster on the straights (I've not tried fiddling with aero and suspension settings yet) and if you don't nail the braking spot on you seem to fishtail off the track. It's immensely satisfying when you get it right though, so much so I'm enjoying dicing for that sixth, ninth or 12th place. The AI seems really good, blocking sometimes as you imagine a real driver would do.

An endurance race at Spa at night was amazing (graphics mode), the lighting, fireworks going off... it really oozes quality, this game.

@Mii_duck I'm playing on expert at the moment. On average I come 3rd or 4th but can get a 1st place when i'm the zone without TOO much trouble. Able to get 1st overall in a season but not every time. I mainly do street race and then touring but also enjoy open wheel and sprint but yet to do a season on expert with them. I really hate endurance though, its the bane of my Grid Autosport existence, pretty much dead last in that one, or second/third last sometimes. I haven't worked that mode out yet, drives me nuts so I keep avoiding it. (I prob should try going back a difficulty on it but i'm too stubborn.)

I recommend doing a demo derby with 20 laps if you haven't it's a lot of fun. Great for breaks between seasons.

{Edit} forgot out about tuner. I'm ok-ish at that one. I can get first in the season if I just keep restarting the drifts but i'm not sure if i'm doing things properly, I just keep at it til I get a good result lol. (Expert difficulty)

Question:
If using a gamecube controller, are the L & R buttons pressure sensitive for accelerating and braking?

Is it worth buying one just for this? (subjectively of course)

Or just stick with right-stick up/down?

Or just suck it up and stick with traction control?

oboote

OorWullie

@oboote Yep, it suppers analogue acceleration with the GameCube controller. You can also use the right analogue stick. I get on fine with the Pro controller triggers but I'm not used to playing racers on other consoles.

This is the only game where I considered buying a GC controller for. If I ever see a good deal on one I will probably pick one up.

Just got the game...anyone know what difficulty setting gets you manual transmission? Also, does anyone use the handbrake ever? It seems to bring me to a complete spin out stop 😭

JRJalapeno

WoomyNNYes

@JRJalapeno

In the MAIN MENU, under CUSTOM DIFFICULTY, highlight Transmission options (push up or down to select Manual). (I also used a gamecube controller for the analog trigger throttle.)

With my custom settings it gives me 14% bonus XP

My settings for other stuff.

Man I suck at this game. Need to practice a lot I suppose.

I was sucking really bad until I turned off all assists except ABS and took the handling from arcade pro all the way down to simulator pro I think...basically turned that off as well. Ahhh. So much better. I do have the road markers on but mainly to see the next turn...eyes are getting old

@JRJalapeno Sounds like you ended up setting things like me. Yeah, an assist or two were unhelpful. I thought beginning cars spun their wheels super easy if you use Switch trigger for gas.

In career mode, once the next track is revealed, I would leave career mode and do the track in Time Trials until to learn the track.

If you have Xbox one, PS3 or PS4 controllers, companies mayflash & 8bitdo make a usb stick with bluetooth, and I think with GRID you can use the their analog triggers to accelerate.
