I received an email from Nintendo today saying gold coins will be discontinued this March 24th.
It says both digital and retail games will lose the ability to produce coins. (But you will still be able to use the ones you already have until they naturally expire)
Did anyone else get it? Is it like global or just my region…?
Either way that sucks. I honestly liked the gold coins!
@Eel
I personally didn't feel losing anything as I rarely purchasing eshop games and even I bought some eshop games with heavily discounted price, I never touch again my purchased eshop games after played them for several minutes after at least making save file.
By given a situation no more gold coin redeem both physical and digital, it will make me more motivated to buy physical games instead and less thinking about digital games.
@Eel
I think people are saying it will be still on switch 2, but as you said "both digital and retail games will lose the ability to produce coins". Sounds like no more gold coins. I wonder will they even replace it with free games like in xbox
Those North American (Murica) tariffs aren't going to pay for themselves, the cost needs to be covered by Nintendo's loyal customers.
I'm sad to see them go.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,442 games (as of May 5th, 2025)

Xbox get free games? MS do reward points - not just for Xbox, but you also get points for searching with Bing, reading news, buying from the store etc.

What do you do with the points ? Can you buy games with them ?
I use my Microsoft points to pay for GamePass. If you farm them intensively enough, it's possible to get it for free indefinitely but I'm not quite that dedicated.
Nintendo just sent me that email too. I'm guessing it's being sent to each person with a Nintendo account manually or something. But yeah, I liked getting the gold coins too.

Yes, you can redeem the points for games - or strictly speaking you can redeem points for Xbox vouchers/store credit, which you can use to pay for games (or hardware, or movies, or Game Pass) but you can also donate them to charity, trade them for vouchers for various stores, restaurants etc and enter sweepstakes with them too.
You implied Xbox users were actually getting free games, rather than the option to redeem points for games. Nintendo are literally giving you free games on Switch right now with Gold Coins, so your comment made no sense in that context - which is why I questioned it.
Yep, for reasons unknown they have decided to remove the Gold points. And Switch 2 exclusives will not be eligible for Game Vouchers. It’s personally not much of a disappointment for me, as I never have a ton of Gold points and I don’t use Game Vouchers. But it still feels like a slap in the face.

What I ment was maybe Nintendo will do some or any sort of free games like other consoles do, when the gold coins stop. Or will NSO be all we get. Maybe there stoping gold coins, because they might be releasing GameCube games on NSO.
@Ninfan I have my doubts about GameCube on NSO. Nintendo have shown they're willing to remake or remaster GameCube games and sell them to us all over again - I doubt they're suddenly going to bundle them with NSO for 'free' when they know some folk will happily pay out again. A lot of the 'big hitters' have already had remakes released or rumoured too.
People already complain about the cost of NSO expansion, so I don't think users would tolerate another price hike, or another tier for GameCube. I think it's more likely we'll see some of the systems that were previously on Virtual Console make an appearance on NSO - like Master System, Turbografx or C64. I'd like to see some Amiga stuff too given the mouse functions of Switch 2
