@Funkate I'm gen X and hadn't had a console since PS2. These are why I got a Switch: Mario Odyssey & Zelda Breath of the Wild are kind of revolutionary. Mario Kart 8 is great.
Like @NeonPizza, I'm Gen Y (born in the late 80s), but I think I tend to gravitate more toward Gen X's sensitivities than my (supposed) own.
There are some really neat retro collections, including Contra and Castlevania classic collections by Konami. Konami also has another Arcade collection with a generic title that I can't quite recall, but you can find it in the eShop if you search for Konami-published titles.
If you like 90s FPS games, then you might like Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary Edition, Quake, and Ion Fury (the latter being a relatively new game made using a modified version of the Build engine used to power games like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior). Rad Rodgers, an old-school side-scroller with 3D graphics, features Apogee Software alumni Duke Nukem and Cosmo from Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure as playable characters, which may be of interest if you're on a nostalgic streak but want to play something new. There is also Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition, an enhanced edition of the original game, which is coming out next year.
Duke Nukem 3D contains a brand new episode, DOOM and DOOM II allow you to download from among a selection of some of the best WADs in the community, including the two Final DOOM WADs at no extra cost, John Romero's Sigil, and the previously Xbox-exclusive No Rest For The Living. Quake also includes the expansion packs and a selection of downloadable fan-made maps. It may be worth noting that the secret levels (with contain Nazi imagery) have been censored in DOOM II, in the form of changing the shape of the swastikas and removing Hitler's moustache. A really strange move on Bethesda's part considering that Germany and Austria are the only territories where such imagery may prove problematic.
And Super Mario Odyssey contains a lot of throwbacks to classic Nintendo that are sure to put a smile on your face, but you can't really go wrong with any of Nintendo's own published titles.
For accessories, I suggest getting an official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (for large gen-x hands) that runs around $70 USD, and if you want to buy a lot of digital games, you'll need a micro SD card, as there isn't much room in your Switch. The biggest available is 1TB of storage and runs around $135 USD. I stupidly started with a 128MB card. Quickly filled up that and bought a 512MB card (the biggest available at the time). And imported a 1TB card as soon as it went on the market. Filled that up as well! Still waiting for 2TB micro SD cards to be invented!
