^It's a difference of 4 out of a range of a 100 between the two on Metacritic, Fates has gotten good reviews. In anycase I thought you'd be against Metacritic pandering as part of your the entire games industry besides Ninty is evil spiel.
Do you rely on Luck when beating Fire Emblem games in general. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just lucky that my units evade at critical points or if a skill activation happened all of a sudden.
Oh yeah, there's a LOT of luck in FE games. They somewhat reduced it in this one though, as it's harder to manipulate RNG. I've seen people do GBA FE challenge runs where they end up just abusing the RNG to win (looking at you, FE6 0 growths run)
@Fiyaball Ok so for a strategy game like say Advance Wars.....how is luck implemented there compared to Fire Emblem?
I feel as though inorder for your strategies to work, you need a bit of hope for them to work as you can't tell if your units can beat the other units until you're close enough.
I still am a bit confused between some stats in FE honestly. If say a unit has low luck but has decent avoid, how can the unit evade attacks that easily?
@Socar
If I remember right, the RNG in Awakening could be explained as throwing a dice twice, and averaging the results which usually favored the player (It still could work against you in higher difficulties).
The main change to RNG in Fates is that it is the old system before FE7, it is only one throw of the dice. So, If you have a hit indicator of 75 and the throw of the dice is 76, your character will miss that blow.
I don't know how it works for stats, though. Usually I just curse Anna if my characters get 1 stat up more than twice in a row.
When I mean that the RNG is harder to manipulate in Fates, I mean you can't do a "cursor dance" to manipulate the RNG. In the GBA (and I presume other) FE games, each time the cursor moved diagonally, it would advance the RNG by one step. This led to the "cursor dance" being used to win against impossible odds, such as this small example in a TAS of FE6: https://youtu.be/yz4WGE60G5Q?t=2m42s
@DarthNocturnal yeah I was initially disappointed to see it wasn't exactly what I had in mind with a SMT crossover. But overall I think there is a decent amount of Fire Emblem in the game.
There are the mirages from Shadow Dragon and Awakening such as Chrom, Caeda, Cain, Tharja, Virion, Draug and Navarre who also have their personalities from their own game as well. Then there is also the combat system which I absolutely love. It's like a JRPG where you take turns attacking with options to use skills, defend and use items as well. But then there are the Fire Emblem elements where the weapon triangle is added in which can also help lead to session attacks and there are also status effects such as poison, berserk, etc. There are also special skills that do better against certain enemies like horse killer which is good against mounted cavaliers and ones good against knights and wyverns too. Also some of the Carnages (weapons) that you can get are based off of Fire Emblem. Tsurugi for example, who's mirage is Navarre, originally wields the killing edge which gives him a higher critical hit. Some other ones that can be obtained are Sol Katti and also Mercurius for Itsuki.
Aside from combat there are also various nods to the Fire Emblem series and also all of the boss enemies are characters from Shadow Dragon/Awakening. In one side story, you need to obtain a certain item for one of the characters and this item has Gaius in the name of it and also has the panda (or whatever it is) face design on it like his suckers.
Speaking of side stories, they are one of my favourite parts of the game. They tend to give some back story on many of the characters and can be very interesting or funny at times. A lot of them also tend to do with mirages who are closely related to the main ones in some way.
I really do hope that the game does at least decent here, it really deserves more sales and I personally loved it.
@DarthNocturnal that was pretty much the same for me, TMS is one of my first JRPG's I've played. (Others might just be the Mario and Luigi series if it counts, gameplay is kind of similar).
But as the Japanese release got closer I got more interested in it and started watching more videos to learn more information about it.
Perhaps part of the reason I ended up getting it was because of Navarre since he is one of my favourite characters and I love swordmasters.
I just have an idea......I know it'll never happen and all....but what if we had a game called Fire Fighters?
It has all the Fire Emblem characters we love so much interacting in the world of Street Fighter. Meaning that its a fighting game like street fighter, only instead of having characters from street fighter, its characters from Fire Emblem.
I mean why not? Skill activations act similarly to special combos in street fighter, the characters are capable of attacking fast and you block like how no damage acts in FE.
Yeah...this is kinda late news but three Fire Emblem games are now known as the most memorable games on consoles by Famitsu namely Blazing Sword, Awakening and Tokyo Mirages.
@Socar interesting, looking through the whole list, I think it some choices would be very different in other regions. SNES didn't even have Super Metroid listed in there and there seemed to be quite a few RPG's in there.
Too be honest, I'm not completely sure how high Fire Emblem (GBA) would be ranked here. It had a decent amount of sales, but overall the series wasn't quite well known yet in the west and it was the first game released here.
But Awakening would most definitely be rated highly here as well.
Speaking of ♯FE, it's a little hard to say if it would place highly or not. In relation to Fire Emblem it is quite different since it is a crossover and so I don't know how well the game will do here yet. But it is a really fun game and also got some pretty good scores in Japan as well so there is always the possibility that the sales will be decent.
I've said this a few times on this website, but if anyone is interested in the game even a little bit, I would highly recommend it. It may not appear to be much of a Fire Emblem game on the surface, but there lots of references and mechanics to be discovered inside the game. The gameplay is like classic JRPG's where you take turns attacking, but with a Fire Emblem twist on it including the weapon triangle.
Also some parts of the story do have a connection to Awakening and Shadow Dragon so I think it would be enjoyable for those who have played the games.
@Kazuo Metroid isn't that popular in Japan...I mean just look at Prime sales in Japan...lower than the US.
I'm kinda shocked that the 7th FE game is the most memorable on in Japan when Binding Blade kinda sold higher than Blazing Sword. Its also surprising that none of the Japanese exclusive games are even on the list.
As for #FE, whether its high ranked or not, this is the first spin off for FE at the very least unless I'm not mistaken and it can only get better here....assuming Nintendo wants to make more FE spin offs.
@Socar I came across it after seeing someone else using them.
It is an Itsuki Sprite that someone had made along with other ones made after the other main characters of ♯FE.
I am currently playing through FE6 and I do think that FE7 is better overall so maybe it is just deemed as the better game of the GBA ones. I just wish Roy could class change already haha, I believe that the main reason he is generally known as the worst Lord is that he is unable to class change until either the third or second last chapter.
@DarthNocturnal Ya, it's kind of interesting to be able to use a brigand for once. Although I'm thinking of using Geese instead as a berserker.
Currently, I'm on chapter 16 which is titled something like "Retaking the Capital" which is kind of interesting since it reminded me of a chapter in New Mystery of the Emblem. I suppose it's just a coincidence, but chapter 16 in New Mystery is titled something like "Reclaiming the Capital".
I wonder if we will ever get an engaging story from Nintendo when even FE's stories are not satisfying even the fans.
I get it, Nintendo's more about gameplay than story and Conquest proves that but then why even make an attempt into writing a story if its not great to begin with?
@Socar I feel like Fates just mainly suffered partly due to it being split across three games. Another thing I think is probably the main emphasis on the avatar in the game and making him/her the main character. (Awakening wasn't bad and had the avatar as more of a supporting character to Chrom)
Overall I think that the Fire Emblem series has had good stories for the games, especially Path of Radiance for example.
