I know this is an older game now and was surprised not to find a dedicated thread to it. The only thread I found was a Dragon Quest main thread but I wanted to talk about this game specifically.
I just recently bought it on Switch since it was on sale. I have to say how beautiful this game looks. I played the Demo years ago and loved it and been wanting to play this game for years but could never catch it on sale on the Switch.
Anyway what tips do you have for a new comer to this game? I remember being able to craft weapons but so far I cant find out how. I will say I just left my home village so maybe it's later on?
Let's discuss Dragon Quest XI here.

Ah yes, Dragon Quest XI. Wonderful game, may crack into my top 10 games by the time I finish it. Definitely deserves its own thread.
@Tasuki, you unlock the ability to craft items anywhere once you are gifted the Fun-Size Forge fairly early on in the game. Your first party member gives it to you even before you move on to another continent. I got it about 8-10 hours in, though I always like to grind a few levels in every new area in JPRGs, so you might get it a bit sooner depending on your playstyle.
Edit: as for tips for newcomers, my dad told me to save my gold for later and not buy any weapons or armor at shops at least for a while, since you can find plenty of weapons and armor in treasure chests and the like. My dad told me that some of the gear you find while just exploring, and especially when crafting, is even better then what you can find in the shops. I haven't bought a single piece of armor or a single weapon at a shop, and I've been handling things just fine. Though I'm also not playing with any Draconian Quest limitations either 🤔. Also, I would not recommend spending gold to heal at an inn when you can just warp to an overworld saving statue you've already activated and heal there, then warp back to the town, fully healed, especially once you unlock Zoom.
My top 5 favorite games:
1: Pokémon Violet
2: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3: Animal Crossing New Horizons
4: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
5: The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
@Nep-Nep-Freak Thanks yeah I remember having the forge and making way better gear then what was at the shops when I played the demo but it's been awhile since I played that so wasnt sure how soon you get it. Also what are you thought about the horse? I got it early on but I prefer walking everywhere so I can explore everywhere. I feel with the horse I miss stuff.

Depends on the situation. If I just want to rush over to the next town after a while, I will hop on the horse. But while I am grinding for experience, I won't be on the horse because I risk running over smaller size monsters and not gaining any experience at all. Though I do suggest you get at least a bit of experience controlling the horse semi-early on, because semi-early on in the game (about 15 hours in for me) there is a required horse race.

@Nep-Nep-Freak Yeah generally I dont like using mounts cause I just love to explore everything. Even when I played World of Warcraft back in 2009 I rarely used mounts. Granted I do understand that they make it so you can travel quicker especially in a game as big as DQ XI and their are times that I should probably use them but I just get this nagging feeling that I am going to miss something when I am on them.

Explore, explore, explore. Get your grinding in naturally and save a tonne of cash finding things in chests vs buying. Ive completed the game about 3 times and wish I could wipe my memory and start again. Its soooooo good.

Haha, I had the same thought not long ago, when I started playing the remakes of I+II. Three times beaten, that is impressive, for such a big game. I never got the true ending, so I have a good reason to play it again someday. Easily one of the best jrpgs ever created.
So I decided I am going to take my time with this game and just enjoy it. I got my first skill point which I took the flame.sword skill as I tend to use sword and board more in these kind of games. I got to the first major city and about to see the King.
What I love about this game is that there's so much to explore. I have already spent 3 days in game just innthe town alone exploring all its buildings and look for hidden stuff. One odd thing I keep seeing though are these little ghosts. I see them pop up in areas usually around chests but I cant interact with them. I am thinking its something later on but I dont remember. Other then that, I have found so much stuff just by breaking pots and what not I really dont see the point in buying stuff. I have found so many medical herbs alone.
Hopefully today I will finally get to the king and continue my journey.

Played a few more hours today. I ended up meeting the King who threw me in the dungeon where I met Erik. We ended up escaping the dungeon after a pointless battle with a dragon (seriously why do games do this. If you are not suppose to beat the creature why go into a battle mode have us fight a unwinable battle.) After wards we made our way through the slums and met Erik's partner. Now we are going through the Manglegrove where I finally got the forge.
Overall still really enjoying this game. Its just such a beautiful game and playing the Switch version is the way to go. I cant wait to continue.

Made it through the Manglegrove last night and got to Cobblestone or I should say the ruins of Cobblestone. After that Erik and I started off towards our next destination but before we got there we stopped at a campsite for the night and I forged some new armor for us.
I really enjoy the crafting aspect of this game. I am still trying to get the hang of it, but I manged to make some impressive pieces. My weapons are +1 along with the hero's shield and armor but Erik's armor is +2. I will probably look up some tips when I get a chance. I might play some more tonight probably just crafting as I have to get up early tomorrow morning.
