Topic: Does R.O.B. breaks smash number 1 rule?

Almost every fighter in smash originates from a video game... ALMOST.
R.O.B. is not fictional, it's an accesory for the NES
Does that mean Sakurai lied?

LucaAntinori

@LucaAntinori No, Bc he said video game history, And R.O.B is apart of this, On top of the fact that R.O. makes many cameos in nintendo games, this is just another one of those.

@Snatcher I'm sorry but that's like saying that gerald from the witcher is going to be in smash because the witcher 3 is considered to be one of the best games of all time. Despite the fact that the witcher started as a pretty succesfull book series

LucaAntinori

@LucaAntinori Well R.O.B is Nintendo, And TBH I didn't even know Witcher was a book, Guess he can't be in smash then.

All jokes aside, R.O.B is a Cameo, But back in the Brawl days He said this, "Manga characters will not join the battle (obviously).
The character must carry game history with them", So Witcher still counts and so does R.O.B.

Rob was a NES accessory. Just because the robot itself was part of the physical realm, it doesn't make it any less "gaming" in origin.

@Eel
So the origin must be gaming in general and not just videogames? I think that makes sense. Thanks for the answer

LucaAntinori

LucaAntinori

@Snatcher
I don't think it's that simple.
Dragon ball had videogames before the anime even existed (the manga was just getting popular) and it didn't stop from there. Making dragon ball one of the biggest non video game IPs to have the most video games. Yet sakurai used him as an example of impossible fighters. I don't think it's about carrying gaming story, I think it's about being born in it. Just like the old meme (you think darkness is your ally?)

@LucaAntinori Dragon ball doesn't carry a big video game history, What dragon ball game has Really changed the deal? (Before fighterz) And are the games more well known then The manga? I think not, Goku is also not a video game character, he is a manga character.

Well @Eel said it best, so I think we can lock the Thread Now?

@Tasuki
Again. It doesn't count. Startropics came 5 years after R.O.B.
So it's origin is not from that game.

LucaAntinori

Snatcher

@LucaAntinori But it was Made for Rob was it not? Its really simple, R.O.B is a Nintendo Owned character, so why not put him in a Nintendo game? Plus, when he started getting cameos in games like Mario kart DS, So why wouldn't he count, why bc he was a Real life Toy? Even still R.O.B was apart video game history.

Please, let's get to the bottom of this!
After reading @LucaAntinori 's compelling argument, I can only assume Sakurai did in fact lie.
What the hell Sakurai!?!?!?!?

Goku for smash 2022🤘

R.O.B. originated as an accessory for the NES games Gyromite and Stack Up. Both games were labeled as the "robot series".

It apparently doesn't matter if a character has its origins in software or hardware, the overarching category "gaming" is good enough.

Dracula and Dr. Kawashima on the other hand... those are debatable.

Imagine being a real life doctor with research and stuff and your name is more recognizable as "the floating head from that game"
