Do you like the beat'em up genre? Do you like kaiju? Well then buckle up for for some action in March. It kind of reminds of the King of the Monsters series, only better.

To the surprise of nobody knowing Wayforward and LRG's business relationship.

@Magician what are the chances this gets a european physical release from someone else?

I'm looking at this and Othercide from LRG, not sure if I should hold off or not. I decided to wait on Neon Abyss and there is no sign of a european release yet!

@MarioBrickLayer Unlike Super Rare Games, games released physically by Limited Run aren't contractually locked to their distribution line alone. Other publishers have the opportunity to release the game physically. Street of Rage 4 is a good example, getting retail releases in Europe and Japan after the LRG release.

Unfortunately I feel Othercide and Neon Abyss are too niche to be released elsewhere, but that's just an assumption. It could still happen.

As a lifelong kaiju fan and (of course) Godzilla collector, I'm totally down for this. I want the physical edition, but knowing the wait for LRG games I won't rule out double dipping. I love physical, but I want my monster mayhem NOW, not six months down the road when all the excitement has died down.

It looks great to me and features some awesome guest talent. Matt Frank is mentioned in the announcement, and it's not clear if he actually worked on art in the game or just promotional art, but if his work is in the game it's frankly amazing - dude is one of the top Godzilla comic book artists, and his work really captures the kaiju essence.

This is one of the few times I've ever been tempted to spring for an LRG special edition, the only thing stopping me is the sad fact that I don't even know if the game plays well yet, and by the time I do know, the special edition will be sold out. It's a nice one, though. Those SD minifigures would look great with the rest of my kaiju collection, which even includes some Godzilla monsters in the same style and probably the same scale.

Got to keep it realistic, though, so I'll settle for a standard edition.

This slipped right past me until the article here the other day, and now I’m really excited to check it out. Love beat em ups and big ole monsters. Based on the lone video I’ve seen, the brawling looks kind of unique. I have a huge backlog from the December sale, but I’ll probably look into getting this after it reviews. I’m of the opinion that most games should have kaiju battles.

So is anybody playing this? I downloaded it as soon as it was available but have only had time to play for about an hour so far.

First impressions are good. It's definitely not a AAA production - it looks and feels a lot like a 3DS game, and the training room leaves much to be desired. But the kaiju are legitimately great in design and in how they fight. Playing as Megadon, the Godzilla-Gamera homage, feels just right. He feels gigantic, with momentum that you can feel and very satisfying rage powers. I'm also digging Ganira, the Ebira clone, more than I thought I would.

So far I've only played for a few minutes with the other two heroes, but I appreciate the differences between them all. I wonder if the team are planning any kind of DLC for this, as I had hoped that more kaiju player characters would be unlockable but that seems not to be the case.

I am not, but been keeping an eye on it. Seems like it is getting great reviews! Wondering if I should grab it on Switch, or something higher power like Xbox or PC...

Thanks for sharing! I preordered the standard edition from LRG but I was keen to hear impressions from peeps who bought already on the eshop. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far! I'm still on the fence whether I will splurge and double dip on it. As you know, the wait for LRG shipments feels like an eternity sometimes...

I really have to go back and watch old Goji movies because I though Ganira was supposed to be the Gamera homage, but you say Ebira. Probably correctly! I barely remember Ebira — isn't he/she like a giant shrimp? I just image the enormous tempura ebi-fry donburi you could make. ^_^

Oh bummer — I was hoping that the enemy kaiju would become playable later and add some variety. I simply love unlockables in my games! Either way, I imagine Aegis Prime (the Ultraman clone) would be the character I try first.

Have fun with it!

@Teksetter I thought the same thing at first because of the name, but Ganira is definitely much more Ebira than Gamera. They even call her the Terror of the Deep, and Ebira's epithet was the Horror of the Deep.

I think they rolled Gamera into Godzilla to make Megadon as he has fire powers that are not really Goji-like and he has a plastron, which is a feature of turtle anatomy. At first I was against this, but I kind of appreciate it now since it keeps me from constantly thinking "that's not how Godzilla works!" Megadon is his own thing, and I dig it.

Regarding unlockable character monsters, I don't really know if there are any unlockables since I haven't played much yet. So that could still be a thing. But I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere so far.

@JasmineDragon
Thanks for your insights! Really the base game looks fun enough and seems to have enough progression to keep me happy even without unlockable extra fighters. That Pacific Rim beat’em up concept alone pretty much sold me on the game.

I’ve got a busy weekend ahead, so no real time to sink into a new game. I’ll sit back for now and hopefully read some positive reviews and then decide to double-dip or not next week.

Please be sure to let me know if Minera shows up, or if Megadon does a tail-drag drop kick! 😁

@Pizzamorg Well, I haven't played that much of it yet, but to me it feels right at home on the Switch. There's not a lot that I can see would benefit much on another console. It's not a demanding game with a ton of features. It does look nice on a big TV but it's a comic book art style that works in handheld, too. And I'm still getting used to the controls, but performance seems pretty good so far.

I could see buying it on Steam, if you're into Steam, because I like Steam communities and I bet kaiju artists and fans and modders will flock to this and there will be good vibes. But on the Switch I can play in bed - huge plus!
