BigMac1204 usually if Nintendo does something kinda for the first time, it's quite noob proof. The complaints are more often that the games are too simple. So I think it's fair to say that you can expect this to be approachable for new players at the least.

Nintendo aren't making the game tho, it's being made by Marvelous who did games like Senran Kagura, Fate/Extella and Half Minute Hero.

Has anyone tried the demo and would be willing to share their thoughts? My experience wasn't particularly great, and I'm looking for a second opinion to see if I may have missed something.

I gave it a try a few hours ago, and I have several criticisms. While the game is visually striking, it's somewhat shallow. The combat doesn't seem to have any depth and was beginning to grow stale in the couple hours I was playing. For a game based around mech combat, that's not a good sign. As an example, all weapons have one assigned action (even melee ones). The blades give you a charging slash, and guns do what you'd expect, I guess. There's a beam saber I saw that might have a different action, but that's also my point here. You're incentivized to farm RNG weapon drops for actions that are more interesting, and this was somehow thought to be a preferable design choice over implementing combat more responsive, coherent and reliant on the player.

Then there's the story (or lack thereof). I found myself skipping through all the dialogues because they were either annoying or putting me to sleep. There were some neat cutscenes, but I'd be lying if I said I knew what was going on. The execution in storytelling is so poor I'll just have to give Marvelous the benefit of the doubt and assume this is nowhere near what to expect in the final build.

It's not all bad, though. Mech customization shows potential, and if we assume the character creator will have more assets on release, I have no complaints. If you don't mind techno metal fusion, the music's pretty entertaining and fits the atmosphere well. There's some solid shredding going on in these tracks, too.

The themes and concepts introduced, for the most part, are superficial. That may be appealing to some, but it's 2019. It's not unreasonable to expect at least some compelling elements that exceed simply checking a box. Daemon X Machina, in its current build, is an action game, and a fairly hollow one at that. It looks cool and sounds good, but it feels hollow.

At the very least, I think they should improve the HUD. There's too much information being blasted and it's all over the screen. There should be a way to organize it to look cleaner

Really not sold on this so far. On the boss fight in the demo and I don't feel threatened just bored. I died, but only because I ran out of ammo before the boss died and then just flailed around wondering what the hell I was supposed to do, looking for ammo for another 10 minutes. No to mention the text is small.

Also, I like how there are all these different characters in the missions so far, but I hate how you basically don't exist. All these conversations are happening, but you basically are not in the room. What's the point of having your own custom character at all if you just aren't there? It feels like Pokemon Sun and Moon all over again, sure I can make my own character and mech, but it doesn't feel like my story, it feels like I am just some side character for other people. Not even that, I'm a background character. A red shirt with no lines. Just a set of weapons backing up the real cast.

That's what I hate about many "create your character" games, you're just there as an observer. I find it very lazy writing, tbh

Holy crud, this game went to hell when I fought that colossal boss enemy. They either need to remove limited ammo entirely or make ammo drops WAY more generous, because I've tried to beat that boss twice, and both times I quickly ran out of ammo and spent 10+ minutes trying to smack down those little helper robots for ammo drops (trying to smack down tiny moving targets with a clunky robot is about as fun as it sounds) before I fly over, start smack at the big robot until my health depletes, am forces to eject, and then quickly get killed on the ground because, well, I'm a tiny little person trying to fight some 1000 foot long robot.

Also, the framerate in that boss fight was simply atrocious. Which is too bad, because previous missions felt OK in both handheld and docked mode.

Also, the text is way too small, and there doesn't seem to be any way to interact with NPCs at the base. I'm just trapped in the hangar between missions.

There's a lot to like here (great aesthetic, some fun dialogue, customizable robots), but until they address my biggest concerns, I'm not purchasing this.

My concerns:

  • Framerate was garbage. Apparently this is like Armored Core, but I never played Armored Core, and the framerate is still pretty bad, which is pretty detrimental in an action game.
  • We need custom button layouts. I don't want to just stick with some presets. Boosting while aiming was a royal pain in the ass, and I kept thinking it was like Xenoblade X's Skells when I tried to ascend or descend lmao.
  • Gyro aiming is a must. It should be a sin to ship a game with aiming mechanics without gyro aiming (unless it's Valkyria Chronicles then it's ok).
  • Feedback on destroying things is a bit ehh. Maybe turn up the rumble for shooting things?
  • Melee weapons feel a bit stiff. I think it would be better if they had some combo potential and flowed more naturally.
  • Defensive options feel a bit weird. Dodging missiles and bullets is a bit of a crapshoot. Healing is also pretty limited. I beat all of the missions on my first try, but the last two missions I was literally at the tail end of my health.
  • Story is whatever. Not really feeling it, although I do enjoy the characters a bit.
  • Whatever happened here (mild cursing here)

Everything else I'm really digging though. Still locked in for the game!

Also I noticed that nearly everything in this demo was shown at the E3 2018 trailer. So this could very well be a really early version of the game. Hopefully by now they've polished the game up a great deal.

@Ralizah Did you get the rocket launcher as a drop? I equipped that and the giant walker thing at the end of the demo wasn't too bad. I stupidly wasn't able to dodge some of its lasers though, but that was on me.

@EvilLucario No. I didn't even have melee weapons. Just a couple of basic guns, and they run out of ammo extremely quickly. Lasers are pretty easy to dodge, at least, considering you get a warning light a second or two before it shoots, though. Where on earth did you find a rocket launcher?

If they release a second build of the demo that addresses my criticisms, I'll likely nab the game at launch, as I do think it's quite stylish and cool. But it has huge issues as is. It's encouraging at least that they want feedback on the demo.

I'd also love to see some sort of integration of gyro aiming. Between Steam and Switch, I'm pretty much able to use gyro in all of my games that involve aiming now, and it's brilliant.

I agree the that demo feels rough though given I haven't seen anything new yet in the demo, my guess is that they just made the Gamescom demo downloadable.

@Ralizah If you loot bodies (marked on the minimap with a ! surrounded by a triangle), you can find weapons and armor pieces. I got the rocket launcher on the third mission where you defend the library from the first body I looted.

I don't know if missiles have ammo though (when you press L). Missiles are REALLY potent against stationary enemies like that giant walker (but are mostly useless against other Arsenals), so you should use them as much as possible when you lock on.

@EvilLucario I looted some bodies, but didn't find anything like that. I might go back to the third mission and see if I can find that.

I've only done the first two missions (wanted to get some Yoshi and Tetris in last night, as well) so far. I'm liking what I've seen and felt. Reminds me alot of Robotech: Invasion.
Don't forget that this is a play test demo for feedback, though. I mean, go give feedback to the devs and not just the NL forum. No doubt it'll get better, but this approach was smart, and something everyone always complains companies don't do enough of.

@EvilLucario You can customize controls. There are 3 presets, and you can make a custom set based on any of them.

Some fair criticism in this thread. I share most of your opinions. The game seems to have both pros and cons. Hopefully the cons have evolved into pros when the game finally releases. Based on the demo, it seems like an OK game, but I will wait for reviews on the full game before I decide if to buy it or not. A shame about the framerate. Also I fear it will become too repetitive. But it looks pretty good and the controls are alright.

Was more impressed with the Yoshi demo tbh.

I played it late last night after playing Yoshi and Tetris 99 for an hour. I was falling asleep while playing. Will go back tonight. So far it feel slow. Maybe I need to rely less on moving the camera to aim and just let the auto aiming do most of the work for me? I played with the preset 3 control scheme; moving boos to the R button and that seemed to help a bit. Definitely hope there are different attributes to boost your mech's performance. I would have preferred a dedicated lock-on system for quick strafing. The flight feels like an after-thought even when boosting.

You havn't seen BAD BOYS 2 ???!!

Overall feeling after completing the demo is that It’s ok, with the potential to be great, if they adjust and add some things to the mix. Some of my comments are properly already being taken care of but here goes:

  • The Story needs to be far less fragmented. There are bits here and there of a organization with a hidden agenda and alliances between outers, but nothing that is really fletched out enough to make sense in the context of the demo. Story progression needs to happen both between and in missions far more because right now its just random missions with no real connection.
  • The mission areas that are in the Demo are all very similar looking and this will get tedious after 2-3 hours. Mix it up with some Jungle, Snow and so forth.
  • The Character you create needs to be involved in the dialogue between missions so you can create a personality. Think dialogue options like Mass Effect or something in the vein.
  • The base/hub is very bare bones and all you can really do is run around and look at the Arsenal and access the Terminal. Maybe make the customization of the Arsenal more interactive instead of having it all accessed through the terminal. NPC’s could be nice to (Corporate personnel coming to check on the operation or survivors you have saved).
  • Melee weapons should be fletched out more. I love the sword but it would be awesome with a whip that drains energy from enemies or daggers that stun enemies with electricity.
  • Last and curtainly not least, are the framerate problem, especially in the boss fight. A locked 30 fps. must be manageable.

Looking forward to seeing the final build!

BlackenedHalo

Is there that mentioned survey?
Anyways, my opinion is that it shows some promise, but the devs can achieve more in terms of interactivity in your hangar. You can just run around and setup your gear. No talking to characters, it feels too static, no real reason to have that hangar actually, if everything is just a menu-driving matter in the end.
I love the graphics, oh boy. It looks absolutely fantastic on TV, in the handheld mode however too jaggy. I love the deep customization options regarding the HUD and Arsenal, interesting.
I really hope the game will be more than just "pick a mission, kill a certain amount and enemies, go back to hangar". If no, Daemon X Machina will be a failure.

The way it was described in the Direct, it seems that you'll get an email from Nintendo at some point about the survey if you play the demo. Kind of like what happened for Octopath.
