@FaeKnight There should be 18 stages in the first two books (not counting the prologue ''stages'', but including the boss fights). The actual number of stages is actually 82. The last book is a bit weird, but there's a stage that can last quite a while if you're not prepared. I think €40 was a fair price for the amount of content.

At least it's not like Kirby Star Allies, which you can beat in 4 or 5 hours, and that was a €60 game. I feel like that game should've been €40 instead.

@FaeKnight: All I can say is: keep playing. I just finished this on the Wii U, and there is a gradual difficulty curve and more fun than you're currently seeing.

I daresay $40 is about right in this case.

Been having fun playing it. Actually ran through a few more stages while waiting for a ride (not realizing the event got canceled) today. I'm not finding it to be a hard game. Cute, adorable, and fun... yes. Hard, not a chance. Even if you do start struggling, it gives you Invincibility mushrooms at the start of a level if you've died 2 or 3 times. Thus stripping the challenge out. Even the stages that give me some trouble aren't particularly hard. The remixed 1st boss in Episode 2 is interesting.

Still doesn't feel worth forty dollars, but I do like the game.

I played the demo docked and the constant blinking blue dot is practically unbearable. This game is best played on the Wii U. If you are playing on Switch, best in mobile mode and not docked.

Nintendo should have had the blue dot hidden except when needed.

Eh, I find docked or tabletop is best for it. The blinking dot may be annoying. But being able to freeze enemies by holding ZR while pointing at them is a huge help. Otherwise you'd have to do so via the touch screen, which blocks your view of the stage and means you can't move, interact with things like pulling grass or levers, and interact with things like freezing enemies and terrain.

For an added challenge, try playing docked while the joy con are in the controller grip. It's not much of a challenge, but it's some additional challenge.

"Nintendo should have had the blue dot hidden except when needed."

The problem with that idea is that you can use it at all times. Both to interact with the stage it's self, and to freeze enemies or 'reveal' hidden coins before walking through them.

Yeah well the Wii U version is better, it doesn't need that dot. The coins reveal themselves after you walk through them and I don't think I ever had to freeze enemies before.

FaeKnight

Yeah, after you walk through them. What if you're on a time crunch due to Boos or lava steadily filling the stage? And while you don't have to freeze enemies (and can't do so with all enemies), it's helpful if you want to sneak through for a "stealth" bonus objective.

Boos are the only enemies Captain Toad can kill on his own without items or special setups. And I don't think there's any stages where rising lava is an actual danger.

I'd say tapping the enemies is the most useful with the piranha creepers though. Saves you the trouble of having to wait for them to slowly creep back into their hole.

Some stages have "sneak past all shy guys" as the bonus objective, and a lot of shy guys with tricky timing. Meaning "don't defeat any of them" And episode 3 stage 21 (ghost gallery gambit) has both boos and a "lava rising so keep moving" situation.

Oh I see, I haven’t gotten that far yet.

In stages where the objective is sneaking past enemies unnoticed, you can actually kill them. As long as they don’t see it coming.

Not when the stage has no turnups and you're not in 2 player mode.

You can probably still fall on some of them. Maybe.

That's where the “as long as they don’t see it coming” enters.

Nope, if you're suppose to slip past them, I've seen that objective not complete if they spot you or you defeat one (even if they never saw it coming).

Yes, you can defeat Shy Guys and still not ruin the stealth objective as long as they don't see you before they die.

There's one stage where a sinking platform is an issue, and another where a house full of Boos is filling up with some lovely poison. I've only played the Wii U version, so for all I know there's another stage in the Switch or 3DS version that has this annoyingly wonderful mechanic.

My experience is that they can see you, so long as you didn't get hit by any of them or kill any of them. Of course, sneaking past is easier if they never spot you. And freezing them in place can make that easier to do.

I'm currently most of the way through Episode 3, and probably have just done the stage that @Tyranexx mentioned.

Yup, if you fall on them or hit them with a turnip it doesn't count as them seeing you. (Of course unless they actually did see you at the last second, or another one catches you red handed).

I've done this before, in the first level with this objective. Killed as many as I could to make sneaking past the survivors easier.

Also, unrelated, but did you know that if you spin around enough times, Toad does a packpack attack that can kill most enemies?

It's super hard to pull off without geting hit yourself, so it's mostly a last ditch effort.

So nearly impossible on most of the boards with a "stealth" objective.

Huh, can't say I knew that. It hadn't come up at all.

I want a sequel. Captain Toad: Treasure Trucker. Same levels, but he just bulldozes through them in a big truck. And there's a honk button.

@Octane Sounds like a spiritual sequel to Blast Corps!

Reminds me of a Captain Toad parody I saw on YouTube one time. I'd link it, but it's not exactly site-friendly....

I'd totally play it.
