I definitely think that the world situation has affected more than just the output of games that leads to feeling like this.
I'm generalizing just a touch here but with many people stuck at home with not much else to do, people have been burning through the games they do have at a much faster pace.
We're still deep into a lockdown here in Ireland so all that's available to do is work, go for walks and then TV or Video games. I'm happy that MHR came out because I can just grind out armor sets to fill the void of all this free time 😂
I think a major point that hasn't been brought up is Game Pass. Game Pass for many manages to hide the reality of the currently really weak upcoming Xbox lineup via being able to try out games that the subscribers wouldn't normally try out for no extra cost. Nintendo and Sony don't have an equivalent so more attention is given to what players think of the upcoming lineups for Switch and PS5 respectively.
I feel like the switch has been in a hump since the end of 2017 (2019 was aight I guess), as even when they do release games, often they are not the quality that they used to be, also consider the fact that they're B tier franchises are MIA, a lot of their developers are MIA (monster games, Retro, Suda51 up until recently, platinum games, I'm sure there's someone else, oh Hal laboratories has one game to call their own on the switch in 4 years.
@NintendoArchive Platinum and Suda51 aren't Ninty developers (beyond Ninty have hired them every now and then) and have released a few things on other consoles during this time.
Hal have done a few digital games (even before the Switch they were doing this) so it's more than one game.
I'm pretty pissed at the quality of semi-realistic racing games on Switch - they all seem to have some sort of drawback, or just generally be mediocre. I'd do anything for an F1 game or something. And no, don't go citing GRID, cos without a physical release it is dead to me. Plus, it's an old game.
The Switch is short on sim racers, no doubt.
No F1, no Dirt, no Project Cars, no Assetto Corsa.
I did feel like saying the 3D action genre feels a bit thin on the ground, but I have bought Monster Hunter, Immortals, Outer Worlds (though this got lost in the post so I'm yet to get it) and Journey to the Savage Planet.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,252 games (as of April 30th, 2024)

Yeah, I don't agree that the Switch is in a slump. For me, I don't really have time to play a lot of games so I usually just play whatever my kids get for birthdays/Christmas and then get some Indie titles on deep sale for myself. It takes me a long time to finish a game so I played Legend of Zelda: BOTW last year during the first part of the pandemic, then Paper Mario: TOK and now am finishing up Hyrule Warriors: AoC. I'm also working through Murder by Numbers and a couple other small indie titles. I always have more to play than I can handle. In fact, the Switch may be my last system for a while due to this embarrassment of riches. I have the Famicom Detective games on pre-order and the Mario Golf game as well. I just saw the announcement of the Great Ace Attorney games. I have played all the games in the series so far so I will likely get those to round out the year. Even with BOTW2, I am already booked for 2021!
There's no question that the switch is in a slump. The most exciting releases coming out soon are a golf game (which is up my alley), a 10 year old HD port of the least exciting Zelda game, and Ninja Gaiden (which isn't even 60fps on the switch).
However, everyone will tell you that the switch is not in a slump because they had animal crossing. Honestly, most dedicated gamers will have their fun with animal crossing for 70-80 hours and move on. Which in itself isn't a bad thing, but if you're not into those kinds of games then there's nothing for you. The last time I was even excited for anything on the switch was astral chain and blue fire. Monster hunter was fire, but damn there's no end game whatsoever. Monster Hunter world wasn't sprawling with content when released but at least I could customize my room.
For Nintendo games, yes completely, the last actual Nintendo game was Animal Crossing.
Are they turning in to Playstation and giving up on developing their own games?
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Clubhouse Games, Paper Mario: ToK, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, & Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury were all produced internally.
Now, I understand that a lot of these are ports or smaller scale titles (though I think Paper Mario is a lot better than the internet would lead you to believe), but let's not pretend Animal Crossing is the most recent internally produced title.

@Chunkboi79, I'm not challenging that (though 3D World wasn't that long ago, all things considered), but I was simply challenging the accusation that Nintendo hasn't released anything since AC.
@jump, true, but that seems like purposefully twisting the definition of a Nintendo release to try and force things to fit their argument. Although I left them out in the name of fairness (since they were genuinely farmed out), I think it'd make more sense to include third party collabs like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity & the upcoming New Pokemon Snap than it would be to omit 2nd party offerings like Xenoblade, Paper Mario, & Mario Golf.

@RR529 To be fair it is an interesting point that there haven't been any Nintendo-developed games since Animal Crossing, other than ports (and Jump Rope Challenge!). That's not necessarily that unusual though; if you look at the list of Nintendo-published games, fewer of them are actually developed in-house than you might think.
@jump u got me, the recycled content that is Kirby fighters, & box boy really compare to their wii u 3ds days. (3 box boy games, 2 excellent Kirby games, better than star allies, & a weird one for wii U). Also, Suda51 was a content provider on both the Wii, & the Gamecube, Killer 7 being part of the Capcom 5, (or is it 7) coincidentally Hideki Kamiya of Capcom also was a part of that, & is now part of Platinum, which put out only one Wii game, but three Wii u titles, & 2/3 of them are hard to dispute in terms of quality; as for the 3rd, Star Fox Zero, id go to bat for it. Nintendo bankrolls these projects. I could also bring up that the Mario Kart branch's only contribution to the switch is the fun but shallow ARMs, & they haven't done anything in 7 years, nor has Retro. I should also mention that Nintendo's casual lineup is trash compared to their Wii franchises (Nintendo land would be lumped in). But hey Nintendo Fans are contented with Nintendo winning console wars. Also the hardware is a pile of garbage, its not even that powerful when you consider that its in line with what previous Nintendo handhelds have done: falls right in line with their typical hardware advancement schedule.
I posted something similar to this in one of the news articles yesterday and had people calling me a Troll.
Yes I fully agree with you, I'm struggling to find reasons to take my switch out of the drawer.
Monster hunter rise was fun but really short and with no endgame there was little point to keep grinding high rank gear past the meta sets.
I actually picked up HADES yesterday just for something to play and I hate Rogue-Likes so hopefully this one lives up to the hype.
