Switch 2 for sure. Calling it "Switch Snap" or "Switch X" or whatever will just lead to parents not understanding that it's a completely new system. Switch 2 is perfect if it's basically an upgraded switch, and it clearly communicates what it is.
And not just the Playstation route, but also the Apple route; the Samsung route. Tech companies can resell more smartphones every single year because of one simple marketing convention: sticking to a popular and marketable brand: Samsung Galaxy, Apple iPhone, etc.
The biggest thing that the Switch 2 name confirms to me is that Nintendo plans to continue running with the Switch brand for as long as it's successful. If Switch 2 sells pretty much as well, then expect a Switch 3, and a Switch 4.
PlayStation came to my mind there because this was in the console space, but Apple and Samsung are good examples too.
We might even see a Switch 5 and beyond if Switch console sales still do good by then.
Well it's true they operate in the gaming industry, but let's not forget that Nintendo is selling a mobile device at the end of the day. So they can and should begin sticking more closely to contemporary business models of mobile technology.
Although I did consider the name “Nintendo Switch Snap” because of the magnetic Joy-Cons and how they are gonna snap in instead of sliding.
But realistically that name would still lead to confusion, contributing to low sales. One of the reasons for the Wii U’s failure was the name it got, because the name led to people thinking it was just an add-on to the Wii. By 2013, Nintendo of America eventually had to release a commercial called “Why We Need Wii U” to clear up any confusion and let them know Wii U was a new console, but doesn’t help in the sales area that they called it as an upgrade.
Now let’s see, if the Wii U was instead called Wii 2 and they also focused on marketing the console, would it have done better in sales?
By calling it Nintendo Switch 2, people will already know this is a next-gen Switch and not a Switch Pro of some sort.
@MrCarlos46 Nintendo Switch Snap certainly would be fun! However, Nintendo is facing the pressures of a hyper-competitive global market, a market that looked very different even just 10 years ago. And as they've said themselves, they are no longer simply competing with other traditional gaming consoles; they are competing with a myriad of smart devices, all clamoring for your time, for various subscriptions, in-app purchases, instant gaming, and etc.
Nintendo no longer has the luxury of making quirky sidesteps with their gaming consoles that only sells 30-40% as much as the previous console.
Is Nintendo realizing it’s time to step up their game in the competition?
The Super Switch would be great for the fans but it makes it sound more like a Switch Pro, than a new generation of console. Perhaps they'll go back to basics...
The Nintendo Gaming System - NGS or Nintendo VGC. Or the Nintendo Arcade. Or just The Nintendo.
Somebody made an interesting speculation that Nintendo might make the announcement just after the return policies expire for the Switch consoles kids got for Christmas. That would be hilarious!
That would be after January 31, right?
Meanwhile, I expect the announcement and reveal to happen after the Hits for the Holidays Sale ends, whether it’s the day after or a week after.
Here's my latest prediction: Announcements in March. Release in june. Day One release is Odyssey 2. September release for Twilight princess HD. November release for Metroid prime 4.
Well, now that we have an official name for the thing, what's everyone's opinion on it? Personally, I like it. It's nothing remarkable, but after the New 3DS and Wii U situations, I think it was best that they picked a name that didn't obfuscate the system's intent.
