Topic: Switch 2 upgrade - is it too early?

I'm considering buying a Switch 2 as it's price is set to increase in a few months. The problem is I don't know if it's worth it. Yes, I know I'd be future proof and the performance and resolution boosts would be nice, however I'd probably have to wait a good few months to let my wallet reset if I got a Switch 2 to get any other games with it (I'm eyeing up the Mario Kart World bundle) and there's still a ton of Switch 1 games I haven't gotten to yet, my collection is pretty damn small.

These are all of the big Switch exclusives I own (I have a few more but they are smaller games like Mario sports)

Animal Crossing NH, MK8DX, New Super Mario Bros U DX, Mario 3D All Stars, Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Mario Maker 2, Mario Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, Zelda BOTW and TOTK

Yeah, a lot of key titles missing in that.

Should I buy a Switch 2, and play Mario Kart and my other Switch 1 games for a few months, then dig deep for some other games, or should I spend that money on the remaining Switch 1 games I don't have in my collection?

If you overall enjoy most of the games that Nintendo makes and as such know that there will be some Switch 2 exclusive games that you are interested in, you should probably bite the bullet now. I bought the Switch 2 as soon as I did knowing that there would eventually be some exclusive games on it that I want such as mainline Pokémon and Zelda, and in the meantime, I'm mostly playing Switch 1 games on it, aside from Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 Edition of Pokémon Legends Z-A.

To be honest, at only $150 more than the original pricing of the original Switch, and with all of the extra menu snappinese, higher max fps, etc. Plus some awesome exclusive games like Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 is the most worth it out of all the current gen consoles in my opinion, despite some grievances that I have with Nintendo of America at the present moment that don't bother ordinary Nintendo console buyers.

Also do note that the Switch 1 games you play will also be much better on Switch 2 (and once you checked if all the games ran fine, you can also sell your old Switch 1 to help fund future games)

If you only have a Switch as your main console, then think of the Switch 2 as the ‘Switch Pro’. It is practically identical, with some new features, better implementation of existing ideas and some exclusives (that will grow in number over time).

For me, I would compare it going from my Xbox One S to my Xbox Series X; extremely similar but much faster and sleeker.

Certainly if you primarily play in hand held mode you will notice the biggest difference, as the Switch 2 is a chunky boy compared to the Switch 1! The joycons feel more robust and the screen is obviously bigger with HD resolution. Docked it is noticeably quicker at everything than the Switch 1 and looks very good on my 4K TV, able to stand next to both my Xbox and PS5.

I was putting off upgrading with the hopes of a revised model, similar to either the improved battery life of the Switch V2 or the better screen/storage of the Switch OLED, as well as a price drop or better value for money from a mid life refresh. However, with the announced price increase I decided now was probably the cheapest it’s going to get, so I dug into my game collection, made some sensible choices, traded in a bunch of games and got a nearly new boxed Switch 2 at a huge discount.

The other possible issue is the cost of games. I have only bought one Switch 2 exclusive; Donkey Kong Bananza. Normally it goes for £60, but I found it for £45 and used some cash back on my card to get that down to £10. I have a rule when in comes to buying games: I never pay full price unless it is a gift for my kids or it is a game I REALLY want asap, which is very rare. This may be harder to do going forwards but with games going from £50-£70 new I will be looking for any way to get that price down!
