I don't think Donkey Kong Bonanza is as good as Mario Odyssey or in fact many past Mario games.

I disagree, but you're entitled to your own opinion as long as you back it up.

Aaaand you've lost me. Call me crazy, but I think people should actually play the game before rating it. If what you played in the demo didn't feel like it would lead to something that would get you $70 worth, then fine, but there is so much more to the game than that 15 minute test run, and its insane to compare such a small slice of Bananza to whole Mario games.

In my experience playable demos often feature one of the best sections of games as its basically advertising. So many playable demos are better than the average level of the whole game. They are meant to make you want more of the game it is a marketing tool. The way your comment reads is playable demos are a rubbish part of the game and inferior to the quality of the whole game but I would say the opposite is true surely? I would also state many playable demos have made me buy the whole game on many occasions through the years.

Unfortunately I think this just isn't really true anymore I think--or at least a lot of the demos I tried out both on steam and eshop, is just... depends on what they do with the demo.

A lot of the times they just put out prologue/first few hours stuff which can be hooking sometimes, but it's also not the best too a lot of times XD

Then there's the demos where it's definitely 'demo-feels' where it's all custom stage and everything, which is the best one to give the feel of.

The worst I think is the tech demo where it's painfully clear that the game is still on beta or alpha (the most recent one I can remember is trying out dinoblade demo on steam for this, where I don't think I even managed to try since the experience on poking the option is already incredibly awful. I understand it's solo dev but that makes me stop being interested in the game...)

On Bananza, iirc it's the first 30 minutes, which a lot of people see as pretty boring from what I remember, since the platforming parts are a bit after? I hear there's definitely a lot of platforming parts though down the line, so if you can grab it for cheap it might not be a good idea to do so, all so you can truly give it a good shake and try. (I know it's not for me since I don't like platformer and the camera makes me get motion sickness)

From my own experience, demos generally show very early parts of a game, not a game's peak moments.

This is true for the Bananza demo (either the in-store demo or the eShop demo, both work like this) which features the first parts of the first two tutorial layers. While I wouldn't call these sections rubbish or even mediocre, I don't think they're good examples of the best the game has to offer, quite frankly. They don't really show many of the very interesting applications of the terraforming and other core game mechanics as later layers do (heck, even the sublayers not included in the demo feature these much better). An accurate way I've seen these early sections described is that its Nintendo letting players get all the simplistic smashing catharsis out of their system before tackling the more complex destruction challenges, and while I found that a lot of fun, it hardly depicts the best Bananza had to offer.

If you're not sold by the demo, I'd recommend checking if your local library has the game available for loan, as many libraries do indeed hold video games. That way you can really see the best the game has to offer and make an informed decision about how it stands against Odyssey.

Huh, interesting perspective, for me demos nowadays offer too little of the game and leave me even more on the fence about buying it. Even moreso if it's at a decent length but the save data doesn't carry over.
I feel like only square and sometimes capcom hvae been giving out good demos lately.

Maybe because you've had cases of major leaks happening via accessing the demo files.

Good... good
Now play Dragon Quest

Haruki_NLI

Imagine if Xenoblade 2 had a demo that was the first few hours of the game a la Final Fantasy 7 or Donkey Kong.

No one would buy it because it's the single worst part of the game.

It's my main console just like the Switch 1. Thus far I really enjoyed Mario Kart World, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Also bought Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Cyberpunk 2077 but still haven't found the time to play them. This year most of the time was spend on Hollow Knight Silksong but was mostly played on the Switch OLED. There are still games (like Pokémon FireRed) that I just play on the Switch 1 hardware.

Not disappointed at all because I buy Nintendo consoles for third party and indie games as well. For me there are more games available than I have time to play. The first party releases are fine but I do look forward to a new Mario 3D platformer.

I could understand buying it too soon. I would be for the most part still content with the Switch OLED but I bought it on release day because I expected the console would become more expensive in the future. Didn't see the reason to wait.
Putting it on Ebay doesn't make sense though because then you are going to buy it again when a new Mario or Zelda game drops? Not worth the money.

I think we will have to agree to disagree about playable demos actually being bad demonstrations of the game itself and if anything damaging to selling the game however generally my experience of a lot of games nowadays is they start well and then you have padding in the later levels. So many games become a bit rubbish in later levels like the classic Halo or recent Metroid Prime 4 etc. Anyway the game did not draw me in with what may have been the slightly weaker earlier level and therefore no way could I justify purchasing at that price it sells at. I also view games across the whole experience I don't want to play through more mediocre levels to get to the good bits I want to enjoy most if not all of the experience. It's an extremely highly priced game and to merit that price it needs to be an amazing game really from start to finish. I've bought games for just a couple pounds that I have put 100s of hours into and really enjoyed the experience.

As for libraries loaning out games from the Switch 2 I can't imagine here in the UK that would ever work. Libraries are not being used that much and constantly fighting for funding and if they did loan out Switch 2 cartridges they probably would never get them back.

Hard to believe a year ago today I was unpacking my Switch 2 and buying Welcome Tour like an idiot,

I held onto my 2017 Switch for (nearly) the whole of the generation and to be fair, it's still working fine. The fan is a bit louder than it should be and the screen could use a bit of a clean but it's a perfectly serviceable console nearly 9 years on.
Off the bat of the Switch 2 Direct and the whole debacle surrounding prices, I did have to take a minute to question whether now was the right time to jump ship, and I'm pleased to say that I'm happy I did.
The big four first party games I've played being Mario Kart, DK Bananza, Air Riders and Metroid Prime 4) have all been very enjoyable (for me at least) and the fact I can continue playing my ever growing Switch 1 backlog with it looking better than ever (whether that be through patches or the handheld mode boost) have made for such a pleasant gaming experience.

There have been, of course, annoyances. Particularly game-key cards, prices etc. but on the first anniversary of its launch, I won't dwell on them too much.

Given Welcome Tour never hit the 1 million sales mark, you were one of the chosen few to experience it.
