@rallydefault I also have a wife who doesn't like physical games on show in the house so I'd just end up having them stored away anyway so I don't see the point. Unless you've got a dedicated games room to display them there's no point

@Klarkus
Oh, I don't display anything. I love physical games, but I don't love them just to display them like so many people tend to do. I think that's stupid as heck. I love them because I know they're my games and nobody can take them away from me willy nilly. No distribution rights fiascos, no server shutdowns, no lack of internet verification, no hard drives to keep track of, etc. My copy of Mario Land for my Gameboy works just as well today as it did 30 years ago. And it takes all of a minute to pull it from a shelf and pop it in.

I want to play a game, I pick it up, put it in the console, and I play it. I don't care about displaying stuff, even if it would be in a "gaming room" just for me or whatever. I just want to play the games - I don't need to be surrounded by them to do that lol

I fully understand on the space issue. I can't stand clutter and am forever looking at what else I can get rid of. The less stuff I own the better, but unboxed games on e-bay for Switch are super cheap and so ickle if do you want to keep them. Otherwise, selling on or trading through Cex really keeps the cost of this hobby down. There are games I wish I had bought physical because I doubt I will play them again.

Even if I skew digital, I would hate to not have the option.

Unfortunately I don't know what is going to happen with Switch 2 pre-owned games as Nintendo has already blocked online for one console where the person bought a secondhand game which was obviously backed up before selling by its original owner using a mig dumper or whatever they are called and therefore was flagged as a pirate copy. I think CEX are in for a load of pain with Switch 2 and even Switch 1 now. Pre-owned is getting a lot more dodgy for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles.

@BonzoBanana This is indeed worrying. I think, odds are they will be ok for the most part, as I think the people who have this knowledge, tech, and means will be vastly outnumbered by your average consumer just trading in...but it is something we have to now consider going forward. So far, is it only the one person banned (and then unbanned, I think) this has happened to? Surely, if we have a reciept for the purchase from a 2nd hand vendor, then they would see reason? Still not a hoop I would want to go through though...

I think there has been multiple instances now but the most documented was someone who bought a game off facebook marketplace and had to send Nintendo proof of the marketplace listing etc before they would unblock the console. I wonder what would have happened if the marketplace listing had been removed and the person had no proof of the listing. Seems like a huge can of worms. It feels like the Switch 2 is really only safe to use as a digital platform now so you need to buy all your games digitally. I'm personally not keen on all digital platforms. That is the main reason I never upgraded from my Xbox One X or PS4 Pro to Xbox Series X or PS5. I just want to stick to one digital platform and that is PC. I prefer physical games for Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox consoles. Hopefully by the time I get a Switch 2 all these issues will be sorted and Nintendo will know the difference between a real cartridge game and a backup at the hardware level. However using the same technology/hack as the Mig Switch cartridge there are pirate Switch games I believe which have been sold through aliexpress etc. Do they share certificates with genuine games? Switch 2 is all a bit messy and confusing at the moment I feel.

@BonzoBanana This is a weird place to be in. Back then, you only really had to worry about whether a 2nd hand cart would work, but we now have to consider if it will block the whole console? This is not something child me could ever fathom rootling through Mad Andy's* suitcase of unboxed Snes games for sale.

*A legendary games salesman who did sell literally sell you games out of a suitcase on the streets of Richmond. Eventually, he did open two shops by that name. Despite this, the unboxed games remained in suitcases you had to ask to for from behind the counter. You never had any idea what he had till then. 😁

@BonzoBanana I’m unconvinced about the Switch pro narrative

The SoC on the Switch 2 does have a 2021 date stamped on it. So they were finishing up the silicon at that point. I think at this point it's fairly obvious that the Switch Pro narrative was early work on Switch 2 hardware/software being conflated with the ramp up for OLED. It was real, it was just more than one thing

They probably could have, if they wanted, released Switch 2 around 2023. I would say they main reason they didn't was continued decent sales of Switch meant they could let the software for Switch 2 cook for a bit longer

It’s interesting to read from the latest Ask the Dev interview: ā€œaround 2021 when we started to think about moving development to Switch 2.ā€ It also somewhat lines up with a conversation I had with family employed directly within Nintendo, that through some encouraging body language (obviously Im not told anything, lol) I got a good feeling that the Switch 2 was in the hands of Nintendo development in 2022.

I could be wrong about this but I thought I read the T239 chipset was specifically designed for Nintendo and based on a cutdown version of a similar chip used in cars which had a much more powerful GPU and twice the memory bandwidth of about 200GB/s. So that was designed and fabricated over 2020/2021 and so I guess Nintendo when they got the silicon would have been developing the Switch Pro/Switch 2 model from them on.

Also when I re-read the news story it seems the Switch 2 that was blocked from online was because the same original cartridge had been used on another Switch that had been blocked but wasn't necessarily backed up or used a mig switch etc. It's likely the console was modded and went online I guess and the console was blocked for possibly cheating online. So the cartridge game may never have been pirated at all just the fact the cartridge had been used in a hacked/modded Switch that was using cheats etc online. I find this even more worrying as it means the reasons a Switch 2 could get online blocked are even wider. Ultimately I think the Switch 2 is a digital platform now as I tend to buy secondhand cartridge games and they worry me now. I don't want to be thinking about stuff like that when playing games I just want convenience and value which cartridge games normally offer. I think if you are the type of consumer happy to throw money at Nintendo in huge quantities its a fine system for you but if you are value obsessed like myself always looking to get gaming experiences on the cheap then perhaps not such a good platform. I'm still extremely happy with the Switch 1 and have loads of games to play through on it. It's not a big deal that my entry point for Switch 2 may be much later than most people.

@Klarkus I recently started getting rid of a lot of my physical games because of space issues and with all these natural disasters happening, I'm trying to minimize.

Gordon Ramsay has a Nintendo Switch.
