You guys all have well thought out arguments meanwhile I just say what I think soooo... bear with me haha! I have a feeling "Switch 2" will be announced in a February Direct. We have gotten Feb. Directs pretty consistently, and that is still before the end of the fiscal year (March), so IMO this is the most likely outcome.
@CaleBoi25 I wouldn't be shocked if we had a big February direct with lots of actual Switch 2 games. But I am guessing the initial Switch 2 reveal will be more about the hardware and not e.g. 40 minutes of game announcements. I suspect the February direct will essentially be a normal February direct but with both Switch 1 and Switch 2 games and that will be possible because the actual Switch 2 reveal will be earlier.
@Novamii I think if the console is just more a powerful Switch they'd have the reveal as part of a big software focused event instead. A standalone reveal that doesn't have much games runs the risk of being boring considering without the games, a power increase is nothing more than meaningless buzzwords.
Switch had the advantage of there being a gimmick (the ability to switch from docked mode to handheld mode) so the reveal was able to get across the gimmick extremely well with only a few games (4 1st party, 2 3rd party) present.
@GrailUK
That seems overly pesemistic but maybe I'm just on the other side of it. This is how I'm seeing it play out ATM:
September: Reveal, possibly as part of a 30min Direct because the message this time around isn't as simple. Should include some exclusive games and be clear about how BC will be handled
October: Something to throw to NSO subs
January/February: Big Direct that outlines the Switch 2 schedule for 2025
Just before launch: Another direct to push some indie games for Switch and Switch 2
April/May: Switch 2 launch
June: Regular mid-year Direct with Switch and Switch 2 content
Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
So Fantasy Life i was scheduled for 2023 at a time when TotK was rumoured to be the last major Switch release, then the game got delayed to October 2024 at a time when Switch 2 was rumoured to be released in September 2024. Then the game got delayed to some unknown time while Switch 2 was rumoured to be delayed to sometime after March 2025.
Could it be perhaps that Fantasy Life i was always planned to be a crossgen release? If so then Switch 2 is being revealed before September 24th:
@Grumblevolcano Do you think the company behind Fantasy Life i would know anything about the Switch Successor at this point? It's possible they could've been given the launch window by now. Not sure if they'd know when the Switch Successor is supposed to be announced, though, however Nintendo could've told them so they could coordinate their announcements for it.
Before September 24th lines up with a potential Switch Successor announcement in week of September 17th as well.
@skywake Definitely agree with that possible timeline. Fall NSO news is pretty much guaranteed, I’d say between now to next month after being a no show for August and a early 2025 Direct is likely, chances will probably be lessened if they hold a similar Direct like it really close to that time like how that recent presentation was held at the time a general Direct is usually held. However, I do see the “Switch 2” releasing a bit later in the year for some reason. I do think they would reveal the next console early next year and then release it later, maybe a fall or holiday 2025 release, but given the logic you and everyone else has given with how Nintendo wants to defeat leakers and improve security and prevent security breaches that could leak out important projects and game info, I can see them announcing the “Switch 2” early to prevent any significant leaks. It would be cool if they did reveal the console sometime this month, but I do wonder if it’s too early for them to do it.
Honestly, I suspect it will be at the end of the year, or if not when Nintendo is ready to reveal I suspect they will do what they did with the reveal of the Nintendo Switch and do a separate video then do a live event or do a Nintendo Direct talking about the new system.

@GrailUK
Worth noting that a lot of the "something's happening" that have happened over the years did end with something happening. The 2019 refresh, the 2021 OLED model. The only reason we've been talking about the Switch 2 for as long as we have is because of the NVidia hack in 2022. The first rumours outside of that were after Gamescom last year, then Nintendo confirmed it in March this year
But we're at the stage now where we've been seeing actual information from shipping data for a few months. Data that is old news by a couple of months when we see it. There's no confirmation sure but it's entirely reasonable to guess that if they were doing test runs of a few 1000 units ~5-6 months ago that they could well be in the mass production phase now. That and the fact that they just did a speedrun of Directs for the end of August makes me believe sooner rather than later. Why the rush to get the Directs out the door if not to clear space in the calendar for other announcements?
And in any case, they've literally put down a date that the announcement has to be before. That date is the end of March. So I'd argue that predicting March, given it's the latest possible month, is the definition of pessimistic
@Grumblevolcano That is interesting, I didn't think Nintendo did that with 3rd party games. Usually it's just if it's a 1st/2nd party title release date changes, like what they did with Advance Wars, TotK, and the Mario Movie. Could just be a coincidence, but this is certainly intriguing.
@RygelXVIII I was thinking that also. Similar to Octopath. The Nintendo UK website has a Fantasy Life page which lists level5 as the publisher but the game is not even listed on Nintendo NA, so there is at least a chance Nintendo is publisher there.
Edit: The original fantasy life i game was published under Nintendo in some locations and level5 in others.
@Novamii Clearly they need that 27 hours for the upcoming Tetris nes edition on nso😆
That is a longer maintenance than usual but I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it. Sure, they might be updating it for a new system which will be announced soon or something Switch-2-related or... they could have just messed up something and need to fix it. They semi often give similar 'extending the maintenance window' messages, although in July they only extended it by 30 minutes, not 19 hours.
Many people are discounting the possibility of a Nintendo Direct this September. It’s a fair assumption to make since everything leading up to now has been pointing towards the Switch Successor announcement instead of a Direct. However, I still think the Nintendo Direct is possible.
Many people say the rumours about the Direct being moved up for the Successor announcement means that the Successor would be announced in September.
It was claimed that these presentations were moved up from ‘end of September’ to August. ‘End of September’ would likely be the same week as Echoes of Wisdom, so it’d more likely be the Indie World at that time (If a Direct does happen it’s likely it’d be around mid-September, the week before EoW releases). From my understanding this doesn’t really say the Successor will be announced September, but since something is being moved out of the way from late September, perhaps a Successor announcement in early October?
Since Echoes of Wisdom has gotten several trailers recently, it’s safe to guess that Nintendo would’ve saved those trailers for a Direct if it was going to happen at all. However, if the Direct is the week before EoW’s release, Nintendo would likely just have a somewhat-brief refresher of the game (like they did with LM2HD at the June Direct), because that way they can get all the trailers out they want beforehand instead of waiting for the Direct.
The Super Mario Party Jamboree Pauline reveal also made some people think that Nintendo wouldn’t have a Direct with the game in it. However this was a 30-second character reveal which happened because they wanted Pauline playable at PAX West but wanted to reveal her themselves first. There’s still a lot of information to be announced about the game (and a lot of info just on Japan website), and there’s only been one ‘main’ trailer which was just the announcement trailer, so we’re likely to get at least 1-2 more big trailers for the game, one of which could be at this potential Direct.
I know I went on a whole rant about why I think a Nintendo Direct is possible, however it will seem significantly less possible if we get (within the next 2 weeks):
An international Echoes of Wisdom overview trailer (if it releases as Japan-only it’s probably fine)
A full-blown trailer for Mario Party Jamboree or M&L Brothership
@Tayrailbridge
The current view is that there'll be something in September or very early October. Because they've very clearly pushed announcements into late August that didn't need to be so compressed. More likely September so it can be pre-TGS and also because Nintendo fairly regularly puts announcements in September
But the thought process is that it won't be a general Direct because, again, they just had a partner Direct and are putting out a fair few trailers for EoW. Combined with a belief that there isn't much more to talk about in terms of software for late 2024/early 2025 outside of Switch 2. So instead of a regular September Direct it'll be either a Direct or Direct-like presentation for or including a Switch 2 or a small Switch 2 announcement separate from a Direct
@Tayrailbridge Currently many people are expecting the Switch Successor announcement instead of a Direct. Right now I'd say a Direct is still plausible, but it really depends how these next two weeks play out.
@VoidofLight The M&L Brothership stuff was just in Japan (at least that I've seen) and didn't really reveal much we didn't already know. It felt like more of reminder of the game's existence since marketing for the game hasn't really started yet.
@skywake we got a Direct in September 2016 (a month before Switch's big reveal) which had 3DS games, it revealed some ports like Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World, and also announced a Pikmin spin-off and Mario Sports Superstars, along with some already announced games like a trailer for Mario Party and an AC New Leaf update, some of these things were set for 2017 (Switch's launch year).
I could see something similar with a September Direct this year where they show trailers for Mario Party, M&L Brothership, MP4 Beyond, maybe some short looks at DKCRHD and Echoes of Wisdom, then a few smaller titles (spin-offs?) and ports to fill in some slots for next year and maybe a few titles this year. We could also get some DLC as well, along with some NSO additions. This would be pretty similar to last year's September Direct, which was mostly just stuff we knew about from June Direct, then a few remakes/remasters.
