Topic: Mario Kart World

I don't want to lazily defend a game I've not played, but it is annoying people thinking that it actually matters in month 2 that hardcore Mario Kart fans (which is inherently not Mario Kart's audience in the first place) are disappointed by X or Y choice in this game that will likely still get updates 5 years from now.

Maybe because I did not buy Deluxe for 5 years because they finally made it worth my time to buy a game I already owned on Wii U, people will still be playing this in 2030, relax. This is not gonna be like Mario sports games where they give up 4 months in.

I woke up this morning after having a dream and thought "Yes, wouldn't it be great if they made a Mario Kart Maker Game." let people create and share their own tracks.

My further thoughts on the reaction to MK World, especially the free roam, is that it’s exposed how much we’ve become conditioned to certain things in modern gaming.

Anything that has an “open world” must include checklists, map markers, etc. Anything else is deemed “poor.” Even BotW included most of those things.

Now we get an open world with stuff to collect, but it lacks those things and people are losing their minds. The idea that maybe you don’t have to unlock everything doesn’t seem to occur to most people: our brains have been trained that we MUST have a checklist to complete everything, nice and tidy.

It’s fascinating from a psychological standpoint. Most of us can’t seem to let go and just enjoy the open world, we need to approach it like something to be conquered.

@rallydefault I disagree, if the open world was just meant to be fun exploration then why do they have a counter to show how many P switches you've completed etc? Having a counter shows there is a certain amount to collect, so naturally people want to collect them all. Though the main purpose of the P switches is to teach the player the various moves you can do in game, such as riding rails, driving up walls. If there's no reward for completing all the switches then why have a counter at all?

I also don't understand the coins, yes they serve a purpose at first in that you collect them to unlock things in the game, but they should have a better purpose other than increasing your karts speed a tiny amount during races. For me it would be better if the coins unlocked your characters special ability, such as Mario's could be fire flower, collect 10 coins in a race and you get a fire flower to use. Yoshi collects 10 coins in a race and you can use his tongue to gobble the player in front and spit them out behind you or something cool like that.

You’re just proving my point. You’ve been so conditioned to track anything that has a number next to it. Why can’t it just have number? Why must there be a “reason” for it? Lol The days of just exploring games for the sake of exploring and having fun without having ratios and checklists are incomprehensible to modern gamers.

I don’t know what to tell ya about the coins. It’s been that way in MK games for at least a couple generations now, I believe. They’ve never had the function that you’re talking about.

Similarly, I saw someone complain at the time and effort needed to collect everything or unlock everything (again, I dunno, not played the game) and I'm like...you have years to do this. We're all going to be playing this game in 2030 still, you don't need to do this ASAP. That's not a real thing anyone needs to do right now.

@Bentleyma the point is havimg fun! I know a lot of people have fun by 'beating' a game, bu personally I am having a blast just wandering around like I did in TotK: finding little details, taking in the scenry, and once in a while doing a Shrine or PMission (respectively). I do get the problems ppl have, but I dont mind!

The sake of exploring! That’s exactly what I’m saying. People don’t know how to do that anymore lol there’s always gotta be some goal or list to work through in modern games.

Not a fan of most modern game design because of it, but that’s me for ya.

Just discovered for myself: in Starview Peak, there's a watercolor of the Cosmic Observatory in the library! It might have even made a Luma sound, but that might have just been Nabbit. Pretty cool detail regardless!

@Hapless Congrats! It feels good to take home a Knockout Tour win. I got 1st last night actually. I was in Great ? Block Ruins, it looked like I was gonna get 2nd, but I got 1st at seemingly the last millisecond... those triple mushrooms really helped me out!

@Hapless Thanks, great job on getting another win. Yeah, Knockout Tour gets real chaotic haha. The vast majority of my matches end with me getting ranked out sooner or later. Sometimes very early on. But I still have fun with it.

This was the problem I had when I attempted Great ? Block Ruins in Knockout, where the CPUs would find a way to keep me out of first, like using mushrooms or drifting through the grass at the last corner

@MrCarlos46 Yeah, that was basically how I won that race. I cut through the grass, went through the air boosters, then used my last two mushrooms. I still can't believe that happened, lol.

A new update just came out. There don’t seem to be any patch notes yet though

So they ‘fixed’ the online. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how fixed it really is

They added more options to vs. race. I personally hope that they at least add in all of the custom vs. race options that 8 Deluxe has eventually. Me and my brother loved (and still loved) the custom rulesets.

They added a no com option for single player Vs races. That's just funny. Like, what possible use could that have lol

Being able to play all the routes/track variations without the COMs could be pretty useful for finding shortcuts, especially since they give you Feathers during VS Races and not Time Trials

The update doesn't seem to fix the voting unfortunately. I just tried five times and only got one lap track offered. Not great.
