It's double normal microSD. But tbh when 1TB microSD released it was for like, $250 I think? For a debut release I think $199 for 1TB mSD EX isn't all that bad. I know I need at least that much, especially with game sizes increasing again. I had to bite the bullet.

@JaxonH Fair point. And I expect prices will come down over time as well.
Anyway, going fully physical with retail releases will help a lot.
Although I do expect to want to replay a bunch of my Switch 1 digital games if the newer hardware allows games with adaptive resolutions/unlocked framerates to run better. Also wouldn't be surprised if older games get "Switch 2 Edition" patches.
@BrazillianCara I've been under the impression that regular micro sd cards will be obsolete for switch 2. I can't see the switch 2 system allowing a micro sd card that can't play all it's games. The switch 2 would need a prompt to say something like, the current micro sd card doesn't meet the required specs to run this (demanding next gen) game.
@FishyS
The reason I don't think games will run on mSD is because mSD Express isn't used in a single device. Nintendo has contracted with companies to produce larger sizes and quantities for Switch 2. Those companies (be it Samsung, Sandisk, whoever) will not have agreed to this without certain assurances those products would sell. The only way to guarantee that success is to enforce the use of mSD Express for Switch 2 games.

With switch 2 internal capacity being 256GB, that would mean there's about 230GB of usable space, then subtract the OS. So, maybe it will be 200GB of storage.
I'd been aware of MicroSD Express as a format for a little while, but never encountered any devices that actually use it until Switch 2.
This'll be the first time a lot of consumers discover them, but looking identical to a regular microSD will cause some confusion.
Logistically it's like the difference between SSD and NVME flash storage, as far as different connector pins and faster read/write performance goes. The latter is why they're so much more expensive, storage capacity is only part of how flash storage prices are decided.
Picked up a 256GB EX on amazon. Saw the file sizes of soem of the games so not sure if needed right away but I'll just pop it in and see how it goes.
I plan on having - Mario Kart World, Breath of the Wild Upgrade, Streek Fighter 6, FF 7, Dk Bonanza, Metroid Prime 4 on there at minimum. With those and the NSO Apps and my screenshot addiction it will likely be close to full storage I think.
The Nintendo website claims it only supports micro SD cards up to 2 TB, the same as Switch 1. I'm really hoping this is an error. The actual Express standard supports up to 128 TB. I don't expect it to ever get near 128, but I was hoping they would get up towards 4 or 8 which would then make the 2 or 4 TB cards cheap. If possibly the biggest potential customer base is capped at 2 TB, I don't know if they will bother to keep development going.

We could arrive at a situation like with the original Switch, where it only supports microSD transfer speeds around 60-95 MB/sec (UHS-I), so SanDisk Ultra is a good fit for Switch 1, but the improved transfer speeds of a SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro can't be realised.
@RupeeClock
MicroSD Express uses PCIe 3.0 so whatever the maximum transfer rate is for that. Probably between 3,000 MB/s and 4,000 MB/s
