Lexar has a 512GB and 1TB microSD Express on Amazon for pre-order. Releases TOMORROW, April 2nd.

It even says For Nintendo Switch 2 granted it also lists Steam Deck but the fact they're listing Switch 2 says it all really.

@JaxonH Yikes, that's expensive.

I hope Switch 2 comes with plenty of on-board memory.

Ugh. Men.

@Ralizah
It's double normal microSD. But tbh when 1TB microSD released it was for like, $250 I think? For a debut release I think $199 for 1TB mSD EX isn't all that bad. I know I need at least that much, especially with game sizes increasing again. I had to bite the bullet.

I hope using using a regular 512 GB microSD from SanDisk will still be more than adequate for the Switch 2.

@Ralizah There are about the Switch 2 having 256 GB of internal storage. We’ll find out how much it will actually have tomorrow.

@JaxonH Fair point. And I expect prices will come down over time as well.

Anyway, going fully physical with retail releases will help a lot.

Although I do expect to want to replay a bunch of my Switch 1 digital games if the newer hardware allows games with adaptive resolutions/unlocked framerates to run better. Also wouldn't be surprised if older games get "Switch 2 Edition" patches.

Ugh. Men.

WoomyNNYes

@BrazillianCara I've been under the impression that regular micro sd cards will be obsolete for switch 2. I can't see the switch 2 system allowing a micro sd card that can't play all it's games. The switch 2 would need a prompt to say something like, the current micro sd card doesn't meet the required specs to run this (demanding next gen) game.

@WoomyNNYes I think it will still work, just with much longer loading times.

The reason I don't think games will run on mSD is because mSD Express isn't used in a single device. Nintendo has contracted with companies to produce larger sizes and quantities for Switch 2. Those companies (be it Samsung, Sandisk, whoever) will not have agreed to this without certain assurances those products would sell. The only way to guarantee that success is to enforce the use of mSD Express for Switch 2 games.

Just started to look at these and wow, that's pricey. Hopefully I won't need one for a year or two and the prices will come down.

I'd been aware of MicroSD Express as a format for a little while, but never encountered any devices that actually use it until Switch 2.
This'll be the first time a lot of consumers discover them, but looking identical to a regular microSD will cause some confusion.
Logistically it's like the difference between SSD and NVME flash storage, as far as different connector pins and faster read/write performance goes. The latter is why they're so much more expensive, storage capacity is only part of how flash storage prices are decided.

Yeah, the branding around MicroSD has become increasingly unfriendly.

e.g. SanDisk Extreme PRO microSD XC UHS-I, C10, U3, V30, A2

And no, that's not an Express card. Express is faster than Extreme, obviously...

Picked up a 256GB EX on amazon. Saw the file sizes of soem of the games so not sure if needed right away but I'll just pop it in and see how it goes.

I plan on having - Mario Kart World, Breath of the Wild Upgrade, Streek Fighter 6, FF 7, Dk Bonanza, Metroid Prime 4 on there at minimum. With those and the NSO Apps and my screenshot addiction it will likely be close to full storage I think.

The Nintendo website claims it only supports micro SD cards up to 2 TB, the same as Switch 1. I'm really hoping this is an error. The actual Express standard supports up to 128 TB. I don't expect it to ever get near 128, but I was hoping they would get up towards 4 or 8 which would then make the 2 or 4 TB cards cheap. If possibly the biggest potential customer base is capped at 2 TB, I don't know if they will bother to keep development going.

Cheaper 1TB cards incoming for $150.

Ironically, they're Gamestop branded. 100mbps slower than the Lexar but I doubt that'll make much difference. Preorders live now.

That's interesting, it raises the question of what maximum read/write speeds the Switch 2 will support for microSD Express cards.
Their compatibility page doesn't specify, only that it supports up to 2TB.
https://www.nintendo.com/au/support/articles/microsd-card-and...

We could arrive at a situation like with the original Switch, where it only supports microSD transfer speeds around 60-95 MB/sec (UHS-I), so SanDisk Ultra is a good fit for Switch 1, but the improved transfer speeds of a SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro can't be realised.

RupeeClock

JaxonH

@RupeeClock
MicroSD Express uses PCIe 3.0 so whatever the maximum transfer rate is for that. Probably between 3,000 MB/s and 4,000 MB/s
