Lexar 512gb Express cards are available on amazon US right now, $104. I'm tempted. Delivery date is june 12-16. $104 is kind of lame because I recall seeing this card selling for $90 before.

Edit: I bought one. I guess I really can't swallow paying $200-ish if the 1TB ever goes live. That just feels ridiculous. Before today, was planning on buying a 1tb, but I think i'll be ok with a 512gb + switch's internal storage. Usable space-wise, that's about 460gb + 235gb. That will be about around 700gb-ish total.

edit: edit: And it appears they sold out moments after my purchase. That was a narrow window.

If one is going to say that product is bad then they need to post links of verified sources that says whom makes for Onn as they most likely don't make but have companies like Sandisk that makes it for them.

Speaking from experience, not with Onn but just in general with flash. It's generally not worth going for the bargains. Not even just for the outright scam cards but also just generally. I've had several occasions where I've got cheaper flash and it just died prematurely or the speeds rapidly tanked over time or with sustained loads. It's just not worth it (especially if what you're storing on it is more important than game data) and you'll probably find yourself not saving any money because you end up buying another card anyways

If you want to save your money with Switch 2 storage expansion might I suggest another approach. Just wait a bit. You won't need to fill the 256GB on day 1, you don't need to copy all your Switch games, you're not going to fill it with new releases. So just wait. In a few months, when the early launch demand dies down, the prices will be lower

I have had one microSD card die on me circa 2020, and it was a higher speed U3 64gb Samsung cards. My phone would just freeze any time I tried to take a high res photo or shoot a video. I thought my phone was dying. But when I put the Samsung microsd into the pc, the pc also froze any time I tried to copy multiple photos or a large video file on that samsung card. This particular card was toast.

All my Sandisk cards still work. Granted, this could all be chance, good luck or bad luck for the particular brands. I won't claim my handful of microSDs are a scientific sample/test.

The Lexar 512GB microSD Express card is the first Lexar I've bought. I don't know anything about their cards other than I recognize the brand name.

To Both Onn exSD most likely is made by Sandisk just like how GameStop exSD are mention made by Sandisk so does that mean GameStop exSD are bad as well. Those prices on the Onn will most likely be the prices of those coming exSD capapcity size but since Onn isn't the maker of the exSD I doubt those quality is any worse then the Gamestop brand if by Sandisk. Sandisk most likely makes for other seller who puts their name on the exSD card. This is just like NA car batteries there are a few makers that makes for all others and they put their name on it and slap a higher price but they perform the same.

Looks like official lexar account says lexar cards will re-stock in July. Oof. So much for launching with the switch. But at least they finally communicated about supply.

edit: 6/7/2025 - just noticed Lexar's microSD Express amazon US page is missing. Not sure why.

I got the ONN 512 gb card from Walmart. So that’ll hold me over until price for the 1tb goes down. Because damn near $200 is really steep

@sethfranum @Megas75 Oh, woops. Sorry, the price was $119.99 for the sandisk 512gb express card. Forgive my first edit when it said $199 - that was a major typo.

But roughly $120 USD is steep for 512gb express, and clearly more expensive than the Lexar and onn 512gb express cards.

Jesus Christ!.. it's almost like they don't want you to buy a card, how much is a 1tb one gonna cost then.

These cards are ridiculously expensive. Be cheaper to buy another Switch 2 console and store your excess games on there lol.

If express card tech will improve beyond the current 800-900 MB/s, would it make more sense to hold off on buying a 1tb express card? Maybe a 512gb express card now makes better sense?

In case anyone doesn't know, the switch internal storage is estimated to have read speeds of 1.2GB/s. I imagine that may reflect a limit to the hardware speed, and that may be the fastest an express card could perform.

But this also makes me wonder if switch 2 game cards will get better than the current 400MB/s. Granted, that could make them even more expensive for publishers.

@WoomyNNYes I believe the maximum the current type of architecture can reach for micro sd express is 985MB/s. Rather than increased speed I think it's more likely that 1TB and eventually 2TB will simply get much much cheaper over the next several years.

Are 1TB MicroSD Express cards even out? I've only been able to find 512G online.

@ElRoberico @Hapless
Black Friday sales usually end up being the best time for microSD purchases in my experience, they set precedent for flash storage prices going forward, from microSD cards to laptop SSDs or m2/NVME drives.
I'm just curious if that extends to microSD express cards, since they've not really been in the market until this year despite the format existing for years prior.

@ElRoberico Availability depends on what region you're in. In north america, the lexar card is the main card, but Gamestop has their own brand card with a 1tb express option. And yes, the Lexar card is still usually $200-$220 USD.

For north america: 1tb Lexar is available on amazon right now. So far, I think this is the only place the lexar 1tb express card has been sold.(anyone correct me if you've seen it elsewhere) If you go on Lexar's official site for the 1tb express card, it points to this amazon page.

  • Although, pay attention on this amazon page. If the express cards are sold out, I've seen the page automatically point to a non-express card as an alternative. So make sure the card being shown has "EX" or "Express" on it.

Honestly, I was considering getting the SanDisk 512 GB one, and it's "only" $100 more for double the memory. It's not terrible, but not a great deal. Oh well. I'll put it in my cart and see if it ever goes down.

And this still feels like a better deal than finding an SSD that fits what I'd like for my PS5.
