I was wondering how everyone feels about the new Joy-Con controllers.

If mouse controls work with multiple games similar to Metroid Prime 4, I think Pro Controller and most 3rd party controllers would become worst in terms of features. At the same time they’re way more comfortable to use than Joy-Cons (at least thinking of NS1 controllers).

What do you think?

With their flat shape, small size, and the placement of the joysticks, Joy-Cons are never gonna be ergonomic, even if the ones for the Switch 2 are somewhat larger than the original ones. So I'm gonna wait for Mobapad to come up with Switch 2 version of their M6 HDs, which are absolutely the best Joy-Con alternative out there. Before that, I think I'll just use the my Switch 1 Mobapads on the Switch 2.

I might try the mouse mode on the new Joy-Cons just to see how it feels, but I doubt I'll use it that much, since I've always played video games with dedicated controller and never felt comfortable playing them with a mouse. Also, the shape of the Joy-Con makes it feel quite uncomfortable to be used as a mouse. That problem too can possibly be solved by third parties like Mobapad, when they eventually release their own thicker, bulkier alternatives for the Joy-Con 2s.

I play a lot of PC games with the mouse and, yeah, I don't see the Joy-Con 2 being much good for more than occasional use. It could still be handy for moments in games where you just need a little more precision aiming than an analogue stick can deliver, or to give pointer controls when you're docked and can't use the touch screen.

However, as something to play strategy games for several hours with, I'd be wanting a far more comfortable grip. Maybe third party controllers can do a better job, but if you get something that starts to resemble a more conventional mouse, it's probably not going to be that great as a Joy-Con.

Also, for handheld use, games are going to have to be playable with them attached so it can't ever be more than a convenience feature.

I use Mobapad M6 HD myself and agree they're they best NSW1 joycon on the market.

But I never really had issue with the joycon. M6 HD are better, but joycon aren't bad by any means. In the grip they make a fantastic feeling pro controller and I hear the NSW2 grip with joycon is even better (and has rear grip buttons if using charge grip).

I tested the joycon sideways moving as a mouse and to my surprise it felt pretty dang great. It's easy to adjust hand in a way it rests naturally, allowing very fluid movements on a surface. A 3rd party accessory will for sure make it comfy to near perfection. But I think its gonna be perfectly usable as is.

So ya. I have a Pro Controller ordered also but I do intend to main joycon 2. The mouse mode is gonna be a gamechanger. I've been chasing the "half controller in left hand, mouse in right hand" ultimate controller setup for nearly a decade now. Spent countless hundreds on weird, niche accessories on PC to accomplish this dream, the Fragchuk being my most recent addition that maps most common KB keys to the buttons and WASD to the analog. But it's still not true analog movement.

I won't know until I've had the console in my hands for an extended amount of time. I maintain that the first joy-con is the worst controller Nintendo ever released, having five joy-con incur drift inside three years. We'll see if the analog sticks have been improved or not...about a year after launch. I'm hopeful they'll last longer than PS5 controllers do, which was about nine months for me.

At least giving these new joy-con a magnetic lock mechanism to secure the controller to the console will solve the uncommon Switch 1 issue of the joy-con rails loosening over time. Eventually, rails lose their grip on joy-con, causing them to slide up and disconnect from the console even though they're still attached.

Until we get them everyone is just speculating now on it's features and if we can plug a USBC mouse to Switch 2 and use it.

No. A USB-C mouse will not work. Because a joycon having an optical sensor isn't the same thing. It's still detected as a right joycon paired in split joycon mode. The mouse functionality is simply 1 additional sensor recognized as an input. Games would have to be specifically programed for a USB mouse, then furthermore programmed to allow a simultaneous sync of a single joycon and mouse. And then then furthermore figure out how to map the right analog (used for zoom and pan in Civ 7) and the 4 face buttons and Home and Gameshare and Plus.

So no. Absolutely not happening. What will happen, however, is 3rd party joycon recognized and paired as joycon but which are in the shape of a mouse and include a optical sensor. As well as accessories for official joycon to be shaped more like a mouse.

@JaxonH How do you even know that? You don't even have the Switch 2 to verify this at all. Love how people throw out their opinions as non-facts as they have no Switch 2 at all.

Not interested in mouse mode unless it gets used in a new Mario Maker. I’ll definitely be sticking with a Pro Controller.

You're probably right but to be fair there's nothing stopping Nintendo from treating a standard USB mouse as a partial JoyCon at an OS level. If they can recognise the NES/SNES/N64/GC NSO controllers as special controllers why not also a standard mouse?

Not holding my breath but.... I wouldn't be shocked

I'm not sold on mouse mode. I use a mouse 40+ hours a week for work and that's already too much for me - the idea of using a mouse for gaming is just very offputting. I can only tolerate it for Civ VI on PC because the game is pretty much unplayable otherwise.

I really like the OG Switch joy-con and pro controller, they're among my favourite controllers of all time (the latter probably being my absolute favourite). I'm confident the new joy-con will be great and I'll continue to use them in handheld mode, but think I'll stick with my Switch 1 pro controller for docked until I feel the need to upgrade.
