I'm not big on horror games. For the most part I actually despise them. Exception has always been Resident Evil because it's more "zombies from virus" than "demonic spirits". In fact, Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS was the first game I beat since DKC Returns on the Wii.

Fatal Frame is a franchise I tried out on Wii U and again on Switch, but I gave up so quickly due to thinking it was similar to a game like say, The Evil Within (which I HATED). And RE7 in VR had really put a fear in me of the genre at the time I was playing them on Switch which didn't help.

So why am I talking about Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfy? Well, it had a demo so I figured why not. May as well give it a shot. And to my surprise, while it is more "evil spirit" than I typically prefer, it wasn't trying to be outright demonic with it. More intrigue, suspense and actual combat with the camera obscura.

Which, btw, utilizes motion aiming in handheld mode and feels fantastic. Didn't know you actually battled ghosts and did damage with it. So it kinda becomes a 3rd person game with 1st person gyro aim shooting, in a way.

And it really clicked for me when I played the demo! Trying to uncover secrets to what happened, holding hands to recover health, gaining upgrades for zoom and focus over time... and it performed well enough. Looked pretty too.

So ya. I gotta say, I kinda like this game and I've added it to my wishlist for a sale. Will probably redownload FF4 and FF5 on my NS2 now for backward compatibility.

Anyone else try the demo or buy the game?

Fatal Frame is a franchise that has always eluded me. I played the first one, and it was enough for me to get stuck on an item I could never find, and that stopped me from playing the subsequent games. On top of that, since they aren't in my language, it was difficult to understand the story or what I was supposed to do.

If they had released Fatal Frame IV and the remake of Fatal Frame II on the Wii, I would have bought them without a doubt, but Nintendo made the mistake of not releasing them in the rest of the world, and they missed out on a significant profit.
I didn't buy Crimson Butterfly or Maiden of the Black Water on Steam or Switch 2 because they also aren't translated into my language, which is frustrating and disappointing.
If I'm going to play the remake of Fatal Frame II, I'd rather finish the first one first and then play the original Fatal Frame II so I can fully appreciate all the improvements.

I know, I have a lot of work to do to catch up with this franchise.
