There has been something that I've been searching for, but i couldn't really seem to find a clear answer, the question is 'If I have nintendo online, and my console breaks or gets stolen, will i still be able to retrieve game save data from the cloud backup after getting a new switch and redownloading all the games?'

@blanketocat Yes. Nintendo Switch Online has game save cloud backup. While you have NSO, your game saves get backed up to the NSO cloud. If your sub runs out, your cloud saves stop updating, but will be held for 3 to 6 months? Something like that. You can find the details on nintendo's support page. If you haven't used nintendo.com support, its a good resource, and easy to search through.

Can someone confirm how long cloud game saves are kept after an nso subscription runs out?

Yes. However, there are a small handful of games that don't support cloud saves because apparently they could be used to cheat the game; these include Splatoon 2, Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and Pokémon Sword/Shield. You can check if a game supports cloud saves by looking at its eShop page or, if you've got the game, pressing + or - on the Switch home menu to open the info page for that game and scrolling down to the Save Data Cloud section.

Edit because @WoomyNNYes answered while I was typing: I'm fairly sure cloud saves are stored for 6 months after unsubscribing from Switch Online, but I can't actually find that info on Nintendo's website

Thanks for helping @Dogorilla

@blanketocat (now that I'm on a laptop) Here's the list of games withtout cloud save backup. It looks like a big list, but I think for most people, they only end up owning a few of these, or know it's to thwart cheating with online games.

Please note the following when discontinuing your Nintendo Switch Online membership:

  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the online multiplayer features for most Nintendo Switch titles.
  • Save Data Cloud backup will no longer be available. We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership ends. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory.
  • Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online titles are only available to Nintendo Switch Online members.
  • If you have purchased a family membership, the other members of your family group will also no longer be able to use the service when your membership ends.

And is it possible to transfer save data from system to SD? Useful if you sell a Switch to buy another and don't have both at the same time and you're not subscribed to Nintendo Online.

@BlueOcean If you wanted to call Nintendo support UK, they hide the phone number, but I can tell you how to find it.

On Nintendo uk support contact page:
(It doesn't matter if you're signed in or Guest)
select region EU(for UK),
select country,
select two categories (fitting your scenario).
Then an email form will appear. The phone number is at the bottom of that email form.

If you don't get the number on the email form; select categories repair/tech assistance, for the first category, then select Other for the second category.

@WoomyNNYes Thanks but if it's not possible, why call them?

@CactusMan Yes but by preventing that they are removing everything else. Cloud saves could be free like on Xbox and I wouldn't complain or ask how to transfer save files from the system to the SD card. On PS they are not free like on Switch but you can transfer them to a USB drive.

@BlueOcean It is funny that you mention how other do it and how easy it is but with Nintendo there is a saying "If you are bad at something never do it for free." ... wait a minute that is not right!

Banjo-

@Zuljaras On Xbox it's magical moving from one console to a newer one. I used the transfer feature on PS4 to backup all my Kingdom Hearts saves to a USB drive because, honestly, I feared that my launch PS4 would explode any time and I had invested hundreds of hours in those games. I was hoping that I would be able to backup my Switch Lite save files before getting the next model (or the OLED model) or just to be safe because I'm not subscribed to Nintendo Online.

@BlueOcean Also if I am NOT mistaken (anyone correct me if I am wrong and something changed!) I read that some games DO NOT even support cloud save backup.

So even if you pay for NSO you could not backup 100% of your saved games if your game is not supported.

But at the end you could just use the Nintendo Switch System Transfer feature

@Zuljaras Yes but you need both consoles for that and also if something happens to my Switch Lite I'd lose the save files as well. Right, there are some games that don't support cloud saves on Switch...

I couldn't tell if you were going to have follow up questions. Sounds like you're good, though.
