So I'm trying to get a bigger micro sd card for the new 3DS. Is it known which brands and sizes of micro sds will work? I've heard there was a 32 gb limit so I was going to get that size, though 64 gb would be nice I suppose.
It's not really a size restriction, it's a format restriction. A SDHC card usually comes formatted in FAT32 and has capacity up to 32GB. Since formats are mostly gibberish to the average consumer, Nintendo just says it's a size limit of 32GB.
If you buy a 64/128GB SDXC card and reformat it to FAT32, it will work just as a SDHC card with all of the memory recognized.
Here's a good guide for reformatting to FAT32. As for brands, it's best to just stick with a brand that you've used in the past and know you can trust. All of my various SD cards, thumb drives, etc are Sandisk because they've always been good to me, but YMMV. Avoid generic brands, shady Chinese brands, suspiciously cheap brands, etc. You get what you pay for.
In my opinion, some of these cards seem a little overkill. Shouldn't a SanDisk Ultra do the trick?
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
On a related note, can anyone tell me if the GB of the micro SD card that comes with the New 3DS is any less than what the original 3DS came with? I never bothered with upgrading SD cards, but since I just about maxed the one on my current 3DS, I want to make sure that my system transfer to the New one will work without trouble.
