I'm having trouble with multiplayer mario kart 64 on the Wii u.
The first player can pick a character but the second player can't.
Any idea how to fix this?

Mario Kart 64 doesn't support the Wii remote, you'll need a Wii U controller or a Classic Controller for multiplayer.
Open the Virtual Console menu (tap the GamePad screen), then tap the player number indicator in one of the corners. You can change which controller is assigned to which player.
