Topic: I need help getting someone interested in these games

It's my nephew, I gave him my old 3DS last Christmas. He was really happy.
When his 12th birthday came around on April 11th, I gave him Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D since I completed the Master Quest so there was no reason to keep that game any longer. I also wanted to get my nephew into Zelda since he never played it before and you know, Zelda IS amazing.
Well, actually, he did play Zelda before, but those were the multiplayer minigames in PH and ST and I don't count those because Zelda's about the adventure and story.

But he won't play it, he said he doesn't like Zelda and yet he never played it before. I keep telling him that. I tried telling him a few facts like OoT being called best game of all time on a lot of top 10's, but he still wouldn't listen.
I've always had trouble getting him into new games, like Castle Crashers(which is a fantastic indie game by the way). But once I turned the game on, he started playing and loves it now. I did try using examples like this as well as asking how on Earth he got into Mario in the first place, telling him he should try new games whenever possible instead of avoiding games he's not sure of, still wouldn't work.
When his older brother asked him what Zelda is, he said "You play as a green man called Zelda", and that's when I had to correct him by saying his name's not Zelda. I don't know how he could get that wrong when he saw Link in Smash when we played it. He still needs to know that you mostly play as a child rather than a full grown adult though.
I've still been begging him to play it, because since I gave him it for his birthday, it doesn't feel right knowing he's not even trying it.

The solution I have in mind right now is to show him the most epic trailer for a Zelda game to get him interested, maybe for OoT 3D since that is the one I gave him. If he knows who Robin Williams is, I could show him the trailer that involves him. I don't want to show him spoilers for any other Zelda game like a TP trailer showing Midna though, I think it's best he experienced that himself.

Okay, now the other series I've been trying to get him into is Ace Attorney. The excuse he's giving me here is that it looks just like other mystery games he's played, I kept saying to him that it's way better than all the others and that the story and characters are amazing but he won't listen. He's playing this other mystery game called Goosebumps right now, which I've never heard of but I just found out it's made by Wayforward, a known indie developer.
Fortunately, there's a demo for Dual Destinies; unfortunately, it's rated 16+ by PEGI and he said he's not allowed to play games not his age even though he played Smash before he became 12. I told him there's nothing in the demo that's rated 16+ and that the only reason the game is rated 16+ is because of one scene with tons of animated blood being splattered everywhere. I told him to try it before he left and he said he might, but I just don't know how to convince him to start playing this series if he doesn't. I did show him the trailers for the trilogy and Dual Destinies but he said the same thing that it looks like other mystery games he played and he mentioned evidence, which I actually didn't think he would know what that was. Guess I underestimated how much he knew.

I also tried telling him to try Pokemon which I was surprised that he never played before, because kids his age I know love Pokemon because that's what the age group is right? He said he doesn't like Pokemon and he tried it at a friend's, he found it hard. His favourite series is Skylanders which is kind of similar because of all these creatures you collect, but I'd say Pokemon are more memorable, recognizable, fun, etc. It also sells a LOT more.
But anyway, I don't think there's any way to get him interested in Pokemon.

Here's his other favourite games:
I SPY
Mario Kart (even though he loses)
Minecraft (he loves it)

Now that I'm done explaining, can someone help by giving me advice on how to convince him to play these games? I would really appreciate it!

Everyone has different preferences. If he doesn't want to play the games you enjoy, you'll just have to accept it. Someone's been trying to convince me that Fire Emblem are the greatest games ever, but it's not for me.

However, I don't see why he wouldn't at least give them a try since he has them available. Maybe you could play these in a place where he could watch you, then pass the controller to him. Alternatively, show him a video that shows some of the gameplay.

I was watching a show where they play loud metal music for 10 sec bursts every 20 secs, depriving them of all non-revolting food and drink, keeping them awake for days and playing mind games to get people to do what they want so try that.

@crimsontadpoles: I've already had this type of answer on another forum I asked on, and it's really annoying me.
Y'know, I gave him Oot3D for his birthday and whenever I got things for my birthday that I say I didn't like, I would be called ungrateful!

He needs to at least give the games a try, and that's what I have trouble with.

@jump: Can I have a serious answer? My nephew's only 12 and only comes over to my house for about 3 hours.

Get over it. Stop trying to force him to play games he doesn't want to play.

@the_shpydar: If I was the one refusing to play a game that he gave me for my birthday, I WOULD BE CALLED UNGRATEFUL.
Like seriously, what kind of backwards logic is this? "Stop forcing him to play games he doesn't want to play"? I didn't have to give him the other game he's actually playing and enjoying, I could have just given him OoT3D and then he either wouldn't have anything to play or his parents would be like "Now you should be grateful that he gave you that game for your birthday." and tell him to play it.

He hasn't even tried the games before...

@Peace-Boy: Pressuring him constantly isn't going to do you any good. If he doesn't play it, you'll just have to accept that. My best recommendation would be to compare it to Minecraft. Minecraft certainly takes some inspiration from it. I'm sure there are various Zelda-related things in Minecraft, so try introducing him through that and see if that can spark an interest. Pushing, based on what I can tell, is just going to make him push back harder.

Different people like different things it's that simple. If I tried forcing you to play a game I like and you didn't you probably would be the same way. Instead of forcing him find a game that you both enjoy, it's that simple.

@Freeon-Leon: Maybe it just doesn't appeal to him. I know it's a shame but as I said you can't force someone to try something, you just have to let them play it on their own, I can speak from experience on that.

For years I wouldn't give CoD games an honest try no matter how much my friends tried, but a few months ago I decided to try Black Ops 3 on my own and I really haven't played any other game since. I am really enjoying it. And yes I am regretting it now for not giving them an honest try years ago, but hey we learn from our mistakes.

Play OoT 3D yourself while he looks, or one of the home Console versions, its how my brother got into it.
Maybe you just got to accept he doesn't have similar gaming tastes to you, so it would be a good idea to try new gifts for him instead of games - if he can't appreciate a gift, even if he doesn't like it, get him something like a gift card.
Plus.... Pokemon, Hard? Really?

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The two games are very different, it's like comparing Mario to Sonic.
Pushing him worked with Castle Crashers and Splatoon. All I did was get on the character select screen and he got interested, now he loves the former. With Splatoon, I told him I waited for him to come over so we can both play it and he was like "okay!", now he likes it, he just needs to get better which I've been helping him with.

First off, let me just say, I know how you feel and I can relate, I have a bunch of siblings and cousins, I'm the oldest and I've always wanted to introduce stuff to them not because I have to, but I honestly think they will like it if they gave it a shot.

That's what I'm thinking too.

Ichi wrote:

But let's just be clear, if he's being ungrateful, then that's his choice, and you can't force him. It doesn't mean he doesn't love and respect you.

I don't think he's being ungrateful...

Material things isn't everything anyways.

You don't need to tell me that, but that's not the point.

Ichi wrote:

Maybe you have a personality so you like to try new and/or "old" things, not everybody is like that, not everybody has to be like that, and still there are thing you would never like to try, why not respect that?

Old things? My nephew played the original Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong on his own so he certainly doesn't mind playing old games himself. I don't know where you're getting at with this.

Ichi wrote:

And, even so, for whatever intention you have, for whomever your nephew is, if he doesn't want to do something, in the end, there's no way to convince him. You probably know him a lot better than us, and should know when to persuade and/or encourage him, and how, and you should also know when not to.

I HAVE convinced him to play certain games before like Splatoon and Castle Crashers and he loves them now, he just needs to get better.

Ichi wrote:

Also, as a Zelda fan, Zelda is not the greatest thing ever, and Ocarina of Time is not the greatest game post 2000, and if he were to get into it he would have a special interest for it. Maybe try with another Zelda game (or a couple), i.e. Triforce Heroes which you can play together and if he feels comfortable with the mechanics maybe try a more "traditional" and more "modern" Zelda like Link Between Worlds, Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD.

1. I know that it's not the greatest thing ever...
2. I know Ocarina of Time isn't the greatest game, it's my least favourite of the 3D Zelda games actually.
3. I probably won't get Tri Force Heroes for a while because I'm budgeting right now, I'm only a college student. Also, he would have to get the game himself and there's no way he'll get it. There also needs to be a 3rd person.
4. The reason I gave him OoT3D to start with was because I know that, from research, the original OoT was most people's first Zelda game. I wanted to give him the same experience. It was also my first.
5. I think Twilight Princess might be a little too dark for him to enjoy for a first hand at Zelda. Besides, I don't have the HD version, I do have the GC version though.

Ichi wrote:

As for Ace Attorney, it's very niche. I can't get into it myself, and I would say I'm open minded to games.

Fair enough, but it can't be any less niche than other mystery games which don't have as much character as AA does, which is what my nephew's referring it to. He thinks it looks like other mystery games he's played.
He's closed-minded, that's the problem.

Ichi wrote:

Pokemon may seem like a kids game on the surface, but in actuality it's the complexity in gameplay what drives the more enthusiastic players, and that appeals to youngsters and adults alike. If you don't like it at face value, it's really hard to get into. I don't like X&Y very much i.e., and I'm a Pokemon fan.

Complex? How is Pokemon complex? He's played other RPGs with experience and levelling up, in fact he's playing Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros. right now. He also plays Skylanders which is similar in concept of collecting loads of creatures, but Pokemon is of course more iconic and popular.

Ichi wrote:

In the end, I would suggest giving him something you two can enjoy together, that way both are happy and you are both having fun, and that's what matters. And trust me, when you do your own thing, your nephew will be way more interested in it, than if you try to convince him of it. Play your games, have fun, and talk about it naturally, and he'll be curious about it definitely.

Actually, me and my nephew have been playing games together for over 2 years now. He comes to my house for about 3 hours to play multiplayer games on the Wii, PS3 and Wii U.
Thanks for the tips I guess.

The difference here is that I'm open minded. The only reason I won't play a game is if it has mature content like strong language, realistic violence and sexual content. I also don't like guns.
The difference with my nephew is he's closed-minded. He was probably like looks at the box art after unwrapping and just went "nope!". He doesn't even know what it's about so how does he know he doesn't like it without trying it?

Tasuki wrote:

Again, how does he know it doesn't appeal to him if he hasn't tried it? This type of answer really does not work. And "you just have to let them play it on their own", yeah, thing is, I just said my nephew's closed-minded so there's no way he'll play it himself unless I convince him in a way that works.

Freeon-Leon wrote:

@Tasuki: It's not that his cousin doesn't like Zelda, he just won't even give it a try.

Last I checked, cousins are different to nephews... it's my nephew, not cousin.

A 3DS screen is kinda small to have other people watching, so yeah home console versions.
As I said, he's closed-minded, so it's not that he might not have similar gaming tastes, it's more to do with him not willing to try new things when he doesn't even know anything about the games.
And I think we do have similar gaming tastes actually, we both like Mario.

@Peace-Boy: Haha. Cousin, nephew, whatever, my point still stands.

I have kinda the same problem with a nephew, on the other hand, a 10 year old cousin of mine is pretty open to many kinds of games. He's also very good at smash and other games — He'll be a great gamer.

@Freeon-Leon: Nice, but it doesn't sound like you have a problem, my nephew's closed minded and is terrible at Smash. Maybe he'll get better if he had the 3DS version to practice with.
But I have a bigger problem than that which is what I've been trying to explain. :/

He's twelve dude. I don't know your nephew but I can think of times when I was twelve that I didn't like games that I had never played before (I was heavily against all kinds of FPSes and non-Ninty games for example)

So maybe Zelda or Ace Attorney just does not interest him for some reason or another. Have you asked him what games he likes, or what he likes about games you got him to play? Just find things he might want to try based on that. Don't force him to try stuff and think it's close minded for him to not want to.
