I borrowed my friends virtual game card of Tears of the Kingdom (switch 1) on my Switch 2. If I purchase the upgrade pack will I be able to apply it to the borrowed game?
(I am being told my message body is too short when I try to post this, so I'm adding another line???)
If you have NSO the upgrade pack is included, I'd recommend getting a month or the trial for that before you spend money on dlc you may not be able to play.
Although I think that'd be eligible for a refund, if you can explain the situation to Nintendo.
@Switchman I believe you can buy the upgrade even though you only have a barrowed virtual game card of TOTK. I believe that should work.
But you still won't own the game. When the virtual game card reverts back to the owner after two weeks, you'll lose access to play the game becasue you don't own the game. And you'll be stuck with the upgrade pack you can't play. (unless you re-barrow the VGC, or buy your own copy of the game)
edit: If you already have NSO+Expansion subscription, you can get the upgrade, but you will only have access to the DLC while you're subscribed. You won't actually own the uprade from NSO+Expansion.
I believe the Upgrade counts as DLC, so if you download it for a Virtual Game Card, you get to keep the Upgrade when the game goes back to the original owner, but obviously not the game.
That happened to me when I borrowed Sonic Superstars Digital Deluxe Edition from my nephew, I already had the Digital Deluxe Upgrade plus some of its DLC costumes so I only had to download the game itself, when the game went back to him I kept the DLC I originally had had before.
But as mentioned, for the Zeldas take advantage of the NSO + Expansion Pack offer.
Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is now a hidden gem of the Nintendo 3DS.

Thanks for the help. I ended up signing up for the NSO+expansion as I figured I might use the Mario Kart DLC as well and it worked perfectly fine. The increase in resolution and frame rate was immediately apparent.
