The_Nintendo_Expat

I like to play on a TV, with big speakers, if possible.

My "main" setup is as follows:

8bitdo Ultimate 2 and Pro 3 controllers, docked to my

LCD Steamdeck, docked to a

50" Samsung 720p Plasma TV that I bought in 2007, hooked up to an

Onkyo Multichannel Home Theater Receiver, powering

2x 1985 Klipsch Forte tower mains, and

2x c.1980's Klipsch KG2 bookshelf speakers directly left and right, as satellite/surround speakers, and a

Large No Name powered sub I got at a garage sale for 20 bucks

my other setup in my house is

Various Legacy consoles, mostly from my own childhood, into a

27" RCA s-video CRT from the early 00s, hooked up with a

BOSE 3•2•1 all-in-one dvd player/amp with 2 small sats and a sub

anyway! anyone else feel like sharing? I would love to hear about your setup, whether you like old TVs and big loud speakers like I do, or play tetris on a plugged in DMG laying on your couch like my friend's mom used to do when we were in school 🤓👍

thanks for visiting!

I have an LG HDTV, an older one I have my Switch, Wii U, GameCube, and SNES Classic Edition hooked up to it. Plus my Wii U has a hard drive housing my digital games.

I keep an HP Omen gaming laptop near my bed on a small table, with a mouse connected. Sometimes I'll plug in a Logitech wired game pad to use it with some games. Albeit, it's an old laptop by this point, I'm currently trying to save up enough to get a new one when the time comes.

I have a 55 inch Vizio TV in my game room, where I have my Switch 2, Wii U, and PS3 hooked up. I got that TV back in 2018, and it's actually capable of 4K. My Switch 2 games look great on it. It can do HDR as well, but unfortunately it just never looked right on Switch 2, no matter how hard I tried, so I just leave it off. I also have my Mario edition Switch OLED and red New 3DS XL next to my bed.

Playing: Mario Kart World, Disney Dreamlight Valley

Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I'd like to know you first. Thanks! ❤️

I have two different set-ups:

Set-up 1: my room: everything here belongs to me

  • a desk and chair made out of actual wood that belonged to my dad when he was a kid and has a butt ton of pen marks from both him and me
  • my Switch and its dock sits on the desk
  • my physical Switch games are on my bookshelf next to the desk
  • my Switch pro controller and its charging spot are located underneath my desk
  • my Chromebook also sits on the desk, though I only use it for school and story writing right now
  • one of my Switch 2 docks will be sitting on the desk when I get my Switch 2, I have already cleared out space in advance
When one of my family members is using the TV, I will literally sit on my wooden desk chair, hold my Switch, and play it, sometimes connecting it to my Bluetooth ear buds if I really want to hear the sound well.

Set-up 2: Living room: everything already here besides the PS4 belongs to my family, I just borrow the stuff

  • Samsung smart TV, one of those annoying ones that has a plethora of ads the moment you turn it on
  • the family's Switch dock, when I play my Switch on the TV I just insert my Switch into that dock temporarily
  • the family's Wii that hardly gets any playtime except a little bit from my younger brother who is currently grounded from video games until the summer 🤣
  • my PS4, which will be swapped out for one of my new Switch 2 docks in a few months, and because of that, the thing will go into storage until I have my own house
  • my red Dualshock 4 sits on top of the PS4

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
2: Pokémon Violet
3: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4: The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening (2019)
5: Animal Crossing New Horizons

In my living room, I have a big OLED TV. Under the TV there's a media console. My Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2 Grip sits on top of the media console. In the left cabinet of the media console, I've stored all my Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games (organized alphabetically), my original Switch (unplugged) and its accessories, my spare controllers, and my travel cases. My PS4 is in the central cabinet along with its controllers and the few physical games I have for it. It hasn't been used since May of last year.

In my PC room, I have (and you'll never guess this) a PC. It's not really powerful enough to play any current Gen games, and I barely use it nowadays. A few months ago, I hooked up my old Wii U to the monitor in case I ever wanted to check out Wind Waker HD from my local library.

I usually play my 3DS in my bedroom. I have a desk in my bedroom where I mostly just do schoolwork, though I will take a moment to acknowledge the Rowlet plush which overlooks all from his high shelf, the small Rowlet figurine which keeps company to a long dead beetle, and my New 3DS XL which is currently sitting haphazardly on a bunch of travel books (in its carrying case, of course).

@The_Nintendo_Expat Just so you know, there's a typo in the title. It says "What's you gaming setup like?" instead of "What's your gaming setup like?".

I'm not gonna put the time into to check the exact details of my tvs, but I'll say I have a tv in my room, that would be a standard tv size from let's say 15+ years ago, with my PS3 and Wii. I did buy a specific thing to be able to easily switch between SD and HD consoles, but it didn't work out for Wii U when I bought it but PS3 does. That was like 9 years ago, for a one time situation not worth going into so forgive my lack of specifics on how exactly that works now.

Downstairs is a newer, larger tv I got 4 years ago, also probably the standard modern tv size you'd imagine. Put a gun to my head and I guess I'd say its probably 30+ vs. 50+ inches wide comparing both, something like that I have it primarily for the Switch, before the Wii U (and for a year or so on and off, the SNES classic) before I put that away, multiple times and now borderline permanently after 2020 when I finished Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It is also where I have my Elgato gameplay recording equipment (the one brand I can easily remember!) that I've had for about a decade, and also a switcher used specifically to trick the Ps3 to actually be recordable during the times when I brought that down for video recording.

Downstairs has all my Wii U and currently/already played Switch games, every other system's games (and systems) I own are either in my room, mostly on various shelves or stacked or with my brother. (or the plastic bag that has my GBA games I've probably needed to do something else with for a long time)

I thought you might break the ice! thanks 😊👍

looks like a great setup, and an interesting international assortment of consoles! All my machines are NA versions, and I've only ever gotten into "imports" via emulation.

particularly nice handheld collection! one day I'll get into PSP, thats definitely one of my major blindspots, as during that time I was a PS2 boy but still narrowly focused on Nintendo handhelds.

thanks again!

"Plus my Wii U has a hard drive housing my digital games."

does this mean you are playing ROMs on your wii U? I'm curious how that works. And also a little nervous to power my U on after all these years 😬

"Albeit, it's an old laptop by this point, I'm currently trying to save up enough to get a new one when the time comes."

I dont know how this would work for your particular needs, but i bought a 16:10 14" LCD portable monitor for 40(!) bucks on sale, and it plugs into the single USBc cord to my steamdeck and "just works!' it even runs off the deck's battery if I want to. its one of the most magical things ive seen for the money, as far as gaming tech goes.

point being, that's all the "gaming laptop" I need, and I'm all on with the mouse and keyboard for still less than 400 bucks.

not sure if thats helpful but i thought id share 😊👍

PS - did you hack your snes mini or leave it stock? i fretted over it for a while and finally did hack mine, still not sure if i made the right choice 😂 i love it though!

The only classic games I have on it are virtual console games on the eShop. The Wii U comes in either 8GB or 32GB systems, so to have space to download eShop games (when the eShop was still around), you needed a hard drive with an power source to store bigger eShop games. It just plugs into the Wii U's USB port and the power gets plugged into a power outlet.

I still boot up my Wii U from time to time, I was playing Star Fox Zero on it a few weeks ago.

That's cool, I hear good things about the Steam Deck, though I'd prefer a regular laptop, mostly because I do use my laptop for more than just gaming. I do need a regular computer setup for computer related things I do.

Just stock, with the 21 games included.

In my living room my family has an older(?) wall mounted Sony TV with a piano under it, our Switches used to be on the piano with the DVD player but now are on a small table-like thing to the side. But honestly I just play handheld on the couch most of the time

Living room: 50" Toshiba 4k TV with Bose TV speaker hooked up to Switch 2, RetroUSB AVS, Analogue Super NT, Analogue 3D, GameCube with Super Gameboy (hooked up via a Retro-Bit Prism HD adapter), Wii U, a backwards compatible fat PS3, and a Sony Blu-ray player.

Bedroom: Samsung 32" 720p TV hooked up to a Switch 2 third party dock, Switch 1 dock, NES mini, SNES mini and a Samsung Blu-ray player.

I have an assortment of retro consoles and CRTs in storage since having to downsize. Getting the majority of my retro collection playable (and looking and feeling accurate) on a modern TV was a challenge.

I can relate! Before I reverted back to my plasma TV (again,) I had a lower end "smart tv" with 4k and HDR, but I was never convinced by the "HDR" part so I also turned it off. I think this is sort of a "checklist item," like companies feel they need the HDR next to the "4K" in their marketing materials more than they need the feature to actually work or have a real function. just my take!

anyway like all LCD tvs I've owned, that TV self destructed so back out the 2007 plasma goes! Ironically, when I bought that TV, everyone told me plasma was a bad Idea, and it wouldn't last lol.

Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

nothing wrong with handheld! The fact that people use the Switch in more different ways than traditional consoles was part of the inspiration for this thread, in fact.

I guess the real question is: do you ever play the piano?

Your room sounds boss! I use my grandma's desk in my office, now, with a sort of "pc setup" that I can dock to when I want a desktop style experience. When I was a kid, I would sit at that desk for hours and draw and read game magazines while my grandparents watched Nick at Nite.

In actual fact, I'm watching Nick at Nite on Youtube while I compose this message, lol! I'm not even sure if people know what that is anymore. it's incredibly comforting for me, as is my grandma's desk. Thanks very much for posting!

I can relate! I had a ps4 on loan from a family member for maybe a couple years, and I didn't touch it even once after I stuck it in my media cabinet. I was a huge fan of ps1 and ps2, but I couldn't find anything interesting on ps4 to save my life! and I didn't feel that motivated to try. the "modern" gaming world has well and truly left me behind! ah well!

PS - thanks for the heads up on the typo, hehe. whoops!

"Time Crisis Arcade1up"

Ive often thought if I could have one and only one arcade cab, it might be a Time Crisis one. hard to to replicate that experience on console, especially in the modern day with flat panel tvs! Tres cool!
